  • "Loved this quirky cottage, other than the double bed!"

The front bedroom is bigger and lighter, and could perhaps be made the main bedroom? Otherwise, facilities are excellent. Gatehouse of Fleet is a lovely place to stay. Lots of nearby walks for the dogs, special mentions for Iron Brew for breakfast, and yummy cakes, and the Masonic Arms for a teatime drink and some delicious food. Both very dog friendly, can’t wait to return.

The garden is as described and separate from the house but you definitely needed a torch for last dog trips before bed. We had to buy one as the one provided didn't work. Apart from that we had a good stay.

  • "Hi we had a lovely stay the cottage was clean and comfortable and in a great location."

We would probably not return for the sole reason that the garden was not attached to the property and the wall surrounding it not as high as we needed. Our dogs are medium and large and had to be supervised to and from the garden and kept on leads as they could easily jump over. We were hoping to just leave the back door open for them to go in and out as and when they pleased during our stay. The only other negative issue was the door locks/ keys they were both really difficult to lock and unlock from the inside and need attention as could potentially cause an issue if there was a fire. All in all though a pleasant stay in a great central location for exploring the area, the weather was reasonably nice and the people really friendly. The masons arms up the road did a lovely pint, and we had fab takeaway fish and chips from the ship inn over the road. An enjoyable stay overall.

Hi Bruce really sorry that our lovely cottage wasn’t up to your expectations and regarding the beds they are all new! The property is equipped with more than what we needed and all the appliances and utensils were practically new judging from their condition. The gated garden area was invaluable for the dark early morning dog routine. Extremely warm and cosy in the evenings and perfectly placed to enjoy the charming little town. A wonderful park and miles of footpaths within a few hundred yards of the house which was great for the dogs. It is a pity we could not stay for longer.

The location is very good if you wish to travel around the area as it is central to many interesting places. Garden an added bonus. Quiet, quaint and compact. Slept in front bedroom as much lighter and airier. Bathroom lovely. Would benefit from a welcome guide letting you know where cleaning utilities (hoover) etc (if available) were stored. Would benefit from some instructions on how to use TV, (BT box and TV), and other appliances etc Unfortunately, we were unable to access the TV during our stay due to an ariel not being installed and weather conditions for BT box. The weather was bad so TV was missed. Had to contact owner on a number of occasions. Left 1 day early.

Hi Clen thank you for the kind feedback as it’s all greatly appreciated. Unfortunately you came to visit Gatehouse when a storm hit and all the town was hit by an electrical storm taking a lot of the internet and cables down in the process. We did our best to get you up and running, with an aerial man and BT all coming within the week, the BT box was also the internet and this doesn’t give TV channels just internet Wi-Fi (this was alot quicker than some residents in the town!) If I recall you also left early due to persistent weather conditions. The idea of some information on the use of the equipment is a good idea and I’ll put something together. Thanks again and hope we could see you again for a better experience in Gatehouse. Thanks again Hannah x Property Owner

An ideal base to go walking or the beaches, which there are plenty of, small towns and villages. Cocoa bean chocolate farm, Galloway ice cream farm, ideal if you have kids. One minor problem was that we had to juggle around the 4 duvets to provide warm enough cover for three people (in Autumn). We had to use a single duvet and a double duvet with the double bed, and a double duvet with one of the single beds. It wouldn't have been OK if there had been 4 of us. Or if it had been colder at night. Anyway, apart from that (easily fixable) issue the house was great.

About the location

GATEHOUSE OF FLEET

Kirkcudbright 8 miles; Newton Stewart 15 miles; Castle Douglas 15 miles.

Peaceful in its pastel colours, the small country town of Gatehouse of Fleet lies on the Solway Firth, in the midst of Dumfries & Galloway countryside, with good sandy beaches a five-minute drive away. The town was founded in the 1760s as a mill community, and today the nearby Mill on the Fleet - a visitor centre in a former bobbin mill - tells the tale of Gatehouse’s cotton-spinning days. Today, there are several shops in the town including a small supermarket, chemist, bank and Post Office, along with two book/gift shops, a kilt-making centre and two cafes. All four pubs in the town have restaurant facilities and welcome children. Castle Douglas, a 15-minute drive away, offers an extensive range of shops, Threave Gardens and boating on Carlingwark Loch.
