  • "This is a beautiful location and there are so many lovely places to visit within reasonable travelling distance."

The house was comfortable and had everything we needed.

  • "Lovely property and we really enjoyed our stay."

We like that the property is so remote and very peaceful. The weather was not as good on our visit, but we still had a brilliant time with lots to do. The property was spotless and enough room for the 6 of us (4 adults and 2 children). We liked watching the wildlife around us; baby birds fledged while we were there. We saw birds of prey, sheep and a calf was born during our stay. The views are beautiful from the property. The track to the cottage is steep but the children felt it was part of the adventure! We also chose to walk up which was beautiful.

  • "Wonderful week at Little Laight cottage."

Large and bright, clean and comfortable. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The views are amazing from every window. Children had plenty of space to run around with the dogs. The road up is not a problem if you take it slow we had 2 estate cars with no issues. I would recommend this fabulous cottage to anyone for peace and quiet and great base for exploring the local area.

So pleased you had a peaceful relaxing time. It is the main aim of the cottage! Property Owner

Very spacious, beautiful setting and great area that’s enclosed for the kids and dog. Close amenities, brilliant chip shops and great access to shops. Beautiful beaches and lovely watching the wildlife around about. Great mobile phone signal despite no WiFi so not a big deal. Was a storm during our visit and manager was quick to resolve the issue and offer solutions to losing water supply which was good. great sights to see only niggle is the track up to the cottage has caused damage to both cars brought, new tyre on one car and damage to bumper trim on the other car.

  • "Lovely stay at LittleLaight, and our party, + 1 dog, enjoyed the very scenic views, the peace and quiet of the location and the general sense of isolation which is what we were looking for."

Plenty of long walks and, if interested, many sites to visit regarding Stranraer, and the area surrounding, connecting its history in WW2. Some parts of the approach road to the cottage can be challenging in a small car, but if you drive carefully, there are no issues. P.s, ..please drive on the roads around the cottage with due care and respect as first and foremost,..it is a working, fully functional farm with wandering livestock. Would certainly recommend a stay at LittleLaight and we will definitely consider returning again.

  • "Having stayed in various parts of Scotland, staying in numerous cottages (many booked with Skye’s) we can honestly say that little laights is one of the best!"

The cottage is extremely clean and well equipped for six people. The size of the fridge and freezer is an excellent idea for anyone who didn’t wish to move for a week! (And in all honesty, with the views and the walks, you wouldn’t want to!) Having said that, with two young sporty adults (19 and 22), the Stranraer leisure centre is extremely good and they loved the 7 stains mountain trails nearby! The heating was excellent. In fact, we never turned it up! The hob only takes a while to get used to, if you’re used to cooking on a gas hob. Regards the Internet, if it’s needed that much, should you be on holiday? Our phones worked excellently. The only negative is the road up to the cottage, but they only did ring me and warn me about this as soon as I had booked. Try to arrive in daylight, and take care in places. We had a fantastic Christmas week, thank you for the extra Christmas touches that made it even more special! The Robb family Dec’23.

  • "Had a great stay up here with the dog."

Nice and secluded place with amazing views, the area was fenced off so she could roam around without issues Not sure what the previous person is on about, if you search Little Laight in google it is the 5th option down to book directly, I can't see a 50% saving though? Everything works fine in the kitchen and all manuals for devices are in the drawer under the hob, took 5 mins to work out how to use stuff. All rooms have a thermostat on the wall, property was nice and cosy and the house was well equipped. There's also a coastal path walk right out the door if you fancy it The track up to the property is canny rough, but its easily manageable if you take your time. The door lock can be a little funny, but if it doesn’t turn then I found that if you just back the key out slightly it turned no problem Ignore the previous feedback, some people just like to moan haha

  • "We came to stay for my mums 70th birthday as a surprise, as she is from Stranraer."

I took a lot of time to search and make sure we got what we needed. The moment I booked the property I regretted it from these points.. I received an email from the owners and the first line was ‘if you book through little laight directly it’s cheaper’ I clicked the link and that was correct. It was 50% cheaper!!!! I spent days searching for the correct property for us, I thoroughly searched and not once did little laight come up outside of a booking agent. I emailed the owners and no reply. I emailed again and was answered but told that it’s because I used an agent and they charge fees..but that other people have been able to book directly. If that is the case I would like to know how because even now when looking it only shows through booking agents. 50% is a huge difference especially when it cost the amount it did. I did question the owners again about how people found this and was ignored. Also in the email it went on to tell me basically how to behave. It really annoyed me actually and disappointed me that after spending so much money I was being dictated to. Clean up your dogs mess was mentioned so many times, like we would need to be told to even do this. Strip the beds. Turn the thermostats to 10. Turn the lights off. Leave the cottage as you found it. The list did go on. It probably didn’t help that we got sent these reminders in several more emails from the owners and Sykes which makes it feel even worse! This immediately made me regret my booking. So much so up until a week prior to booking I was looking elsewhere and I’d have taken the financial hit had I have found something less dictatorial. We are grown adults, with children, we don’t need to be told how to behave, it really did put a downer on it. Internet is very important for us and when searching I always filter that wherever we stay had it. I’m not sure how, if this slipped through in my search but there isn’t any internet! I bought a dongle and sim which worked. What I’d suggest is that wifi is installed, nowadays you’d expect or take for granted everywhere has it. The oven is hit and miss as to whether it works how you expect it to even when following the instructions. The hob isn’t something we’re used to so if you’re like us and keep thinking the plate isn’t working because the light goes off and on on the ring you’re using, don’t worry it is still working! A stain of what I can only presume was blood on bedding wasn’t the nicest of surprises and is something you would definitely know was there as it’s the first thing spotted when pulling back the duvet, it was on the bedsheet itself. Tear on one of the dining chair covers wasn’t an issue but wanted it noted so that we didn’t get the blame! The carpets throughout could do with some TLC, as could the sofa and chairs in the lounge. We arrived around 6pm and it was very cold inside, we couldn’t work out how the heating worked, the instructions weren’t that helpful, we did use the electric heater in the lounge in short bursts and shutting the door would help heat up the lounge but we didn’t use the lounge much. Underfloor heating isn’t something we are familiar with. L.L views are nothing short of breath taking. We were extremely lucky with the weather it was beautiful. There was plenty of space outside for the dog to run about and some great wee areas that shielded you from the wind to sit with a hot drink and enjoy the views of Stranraer and Ireland. It only took 10-15 minutes to get into town from Cairnryan, the majority of that time was waiting on the grouse and sheep to stop trying to help guide us down the dirt track by walking right in front of the car! It was hilarious and we all enjoyed it. The cottage was well equipped. We had family over for lunch and there was plenty of cutlery and crockery, we did bring some bits from home as unsure what would be available and we didn’t need to bring anything. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the en-suites had everything needed. Surprisingly the water pressure for the shower was very good and the hot water lasted well. The beds were comfy and the duvets were duck down or goose down which is definitely something you need for the winter months so that was a good surprise. The cottage was decorated well throughout and clean. It was a lovely space and plenty of room for 6 of us plus a dog. You won’t get any deliveries of any sort there so I’d make sure you know your surroundings and what’s available prior to visiting. This wasn’t an issue for us as we know the area. If you’re wanting to literally just get away from the norm of everyday life, put your phones and devices down, sit back with a book and forget reality then it’s absolutely the place for you!

In response to the comments, we would make the following points: In the 13 years that we have let Little Laight we have never rung Sykes and told them that a bad review was on its way before the guest arrived at the cottage. In this instance we did so as the guest was indeed upset that a premium for booking through Sykes. (Just to confirm the premium is not 50%). There is very little we can do about this and many guests prefer to book through an agent for the perceived greater security it gives them. Other guests put Little Laight into Google and it comes up on a variety of different listings. We have two different websites listing Little Laight which allow direct booking. We disagree that `Little Laight` come up outside of a booking agent. As mentioned we have two of our own sites which come up countless times on Google. Earlier it was mentioned the guest received our email so we are unsure why no contact was claimed. We also ring all our guests before they arrive to see if we can help in any way. Regarding the email we send to our guests it went on to tell me basically how to behave" We are sorry if you felt like we were telling you what to do, but the email does not tell, it simply asks. All guests are different and a little help from guests makes a huge difference on changeover days when time is tight. We welcome dogs as for many of our guests their dogs are an integral part of their holiday. Dogs do however come with significant problems and costs attached, particularly when not well trained. Taking the request of bagging of dog's messes in particular, Neospora in dogs faeces is a serious risk on a sheep farm. We do not expect a lot of our guests to know about this and hence the comments. Additionally, we do not think most of our guests have had to strim grass with dog's messes in it. A particularly nasty experience. We ask for dogs not to be taken into bedrooms for hair and hygiene reasons. As the guest rightly says the cottage does not mention the internet because there is none. The cottage is invariably let to people who wish to get away from urban areas and enjoy the solitude of Little Laight. We once toyed with Sky TV but were told very swiftly by past guests that it was exactly what they did not want. We do not believe that WiFi is a necessity to most of our guests, particularly as the mobile signal is good and those that want to, can use a dongle. We will however ask Sykes to highlight this going forward. We are sorry that you could not work the hob but there are instructions in the kitchen, and she had our email address and the contact details of the lady who looks after the cottage. No contact was made. The sheets are of course laundered after every guest. The lady who looks after the cottage rang us in tears after this review as she does not feel the criticism is balanced. Regarding the Tear on dining room chair , In any one season there is wear and tear, especially with dogs, hence a tear on a dining room chair. This is a tricky one to fix mid season and will probably require us replacing all six chairs. We are on our third set of chairs in 5 years. Underfloor heating is what it is and is considered by many to be the gold standard. It cannot heat a house quickly and if the outside doors are left open, the house cools quickly. We are sorry if the guest could not control the underfloor heating - there is a thermostat in every room. Most of our guests come to Little Laight to enjoy the solitude and views and escape from urban areas. There are any number of houses where you can get fast broadband, WiFi, Sky TV, Netflix, tarmacked access etc. Little Laight is not one of them and we thought we had made this clear on the websites. . Also just to note, a grouse has not been seen at Little Laight for 30 years. Kind regards" Property Owner

The accommodation could do with a big clean (possibly tired due to end of season? ) The shower in the ensuite doesn't work. The positives. AMAZING HOLIDAY WE LOVED THE COTTAGE. The bedding was lovely and clean and fresh. The rooms are spacious. The beds are comfortable and the curtains actually block out the light. The cottage was well equipped and homely. The immediate surroundings were amazing, with plentiful walks (including costal) from the cottage itself. The views were good for the soul. The peace and tranquility are amazing and the wind turbine didn't spoil the ambiance either. The solitude was perfect for two anti social oldies, but there is plenty to do close by, if you have kids Kennedy castle, lady bay and portpatrick were all wonderful. I never go the same place twice but would come back to little laight. It's a holiday I will never forget.

Views and surrounding area are great, but….windows are very small and high so that when you are sitting down , there is no view at all . Only having one door right at the end is odd, it would be good to have a door opening to the front of the property and perhaps some garden chairs to relax in and then be able to enjoy the view outside ? Sheep and house martins are wonderful. Unusual that there were no basic foodstuffs eg salt ,pepper ,oil etc. as most places have these. We enjoyed exploring the area around.

Very minor point -there’s no hairdryer. Point of clarity - the drive up the single track road and final dirt track is not exactly correct. It’s a very long way! Peaceful (mostly), comfortable, loads of room, well equipped, virtually no light pollution at night. Cons... No BBQ (at least we couldn’t find one and it’s in the property details section on Sykes), shower is almost impossible to use, noisy windmill, complicated oven! Little Laight is so close to the perfect holiday cottage, great location, spacious and comfortable, breathtaking views and ideal for star gazers (never seen so many stars at night). It’s very close to the A77 and ferries to Belfast and Larne. However, we had to google the instructions for the incredibly complex oven controls. The angle at which the shower head fits to the wall causes water to splash all over the floor unless the tap is turned down to a miniscule dribble. The constant whoshwhoshwhosh from the windmill on the north side of the property is quite loud meaning we couldn’t open the bedroom windows at night. The positives comfortably outweigh the negatives and with a few adjustments this really would be the perfect holiday cottage. We would still highly recommend Little Laight as it’s a great base for anyone wanting to explore this beautiful part of Scotland.

Accommodation was outstanding but weather not so hot... in more ways than one.(Back home everyone was enjoying a heat wave, allegedly!) We had a little rain, high winds, thick sea mist, glorious sunshine and even saw the northern lights from the back of cottage. Nothing stopped us going out and enjoying our holiday. The lambs were as cute as ever! We came back and booked again for next year! I was a bit worried on Friday as the lack of wind stopped the turbine going round, thankfully everything still worked - lol! This meant we had a lovely morning sat outside on the picnic bench. We had a distant lesson in dry stone walling and a visiting pheasant, which I think the previous tenements had been feeding, and saw deer in the woods near Lairds Hill. We were fascinated with the Ferry captain reversing ghe Larne ferry into the dock, on our return to Little Laight, one evening. All in all we had a great time and the dogs enjoyed the garden, the local beaches and a good rest after a busy day out. Little Laight is a great chill out zone for everyone. WiFi would be grea, if only to check the weather forecast as we only get the Irish weather forecast and news, and to check the Glendale aurora status reports.

About the location

STRANRAER

Portpatrick 8 miles; Newton Stewart 25 miles.

Stranraer, which became a Burgh of Barony in 1596 and a Royal Burgh in 1617, lies on the shores of Loch Ryan on the northern side of the isthmus joining the Rhins of Galloway to the mainland. There are many shops and cafes to while away an hour or two and the Stranraer Town Trail explains some of the fascinating history. For walkers, the Southern Upland Way touches Stranraer on its way through the Galloway Hills, having begun in Portpatrick, 7 miles to the west. Three nearby gardens are open to the public and well worth a visit at Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and Logan. Stranraer has several beaches, however it is worth travelling to Sandhead and New England Bay for wonderful sandy beaches. A short drive south and you come to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s southernmost point. The lighthouse on the headland looks over some of the last remaining sections of natural coastal habitat on the Galloway coast and an RSPB nature reserve has been set up to retain this spectacular and diverse area.
