  • "We were very surprised to find there was only a very small amount of toilet roll in one of the bathrooms (less than a quarter of a roll) and no toilet roll in the other bathroom."

The seating area in the kitchen was too small to seat 5 of us (4 max). One of the single beds was very uncomfortable. The downstairs bathroom was tiny and the shower unusable.

It was really cosy and very well situated for exploring Chester and beyond Everything was as described. The parking was tight but we managed. Just one or two things that had been overlooked. There was no toilet roll, coffee or sugar and one or two extra bin bags would have been helpful

Property needs some maintenance as it’s very tired in some areas.

  • "We were 2 adults and there was plenty of room - We thought 6 adults would be a bit of a squeeze."

Kitchen was well stocked with utensils and white goods, and it was nice that there were little bits of handwash, washing up liquid etc left to start things off. The main bedroom was nice and bathroom was lovely and spacious. The bathroom had a film over the window so no-one could see in, and it would have been nice if the same had been done for the main bedroom. Agree with previous comments in that the downstairs bathroom is tiny (even using the toilet was interesting) and the stairs are indeed steep. Nice views towards Chester and of the River Dee but can't actually walk along river except for a very short stretch further down the road. Bus stop towards city centre is about 5 min walk away. Pub across the road doesn't serve food but has lovely views - plenty of outside seating. Convenience store and takeaways about 10 minute walk away. The Peacock pub also about 10 min walk was OK for food but nothing special - cheap and cheerful. Overall cottage nicely furnished and good location and we had a nice stay.

  • "Stayed as a family of 4 adults."

Upon arrival managed to park on the main road across the road from Ivy Cottage and most days there was space to park on the road just the Friday night we had to park down the road on a side street where via the welcome book the owners had recommended trying if struggling with parking. My son managed to reverse one of the cars into the parking space which if you take it steady is manageable but it’s a bit of a tight corner to navigate at first. The house was lovely and warm on arrival and the view from the top floor is great. The ground floor bathroom is very small but handy as an extra toilet, we didn’t attempt to use the shower just took turns using the upstairs one which is lovely and powerful and that bathroom is massive…. The beds were comfy but just a bit strange upon stripping the beds at the end of the stay that the single bed mattresses are smaller than the frames, that bedroom could also do with the curtains lining as the lamppost across the road shines straight in, but a simple thing to rectify. The only issue we found was the same as a previous guest that the Wi-Fi is not up to par as we tried to cast a film onto the tv to watch one evening but it wouldn’t even load so a game of snakes and ladders it was, lol. The house is ideally located we walked into Chester which took us about 15 minutes and not far to drive to Chester zoo too. All in all a good stay.

  • "We really enjoyed our time at Ivy Cottage."

It is quirky but welcoming. There is a slight smell in the main bathroom of cat pee or something, easily sorted. Easily walkable into town, but quiet enough to enjoy. Perhaps a map would have been useful. We bought one.

  • "The property was lovely, it would be better if the parking arrangements are in the arrival info, as its not as in the picture."

The cheap slow ( 2mb - 14mb) was a disappointment, slower than the hotspot on my mobile. I checked the 3g mobile broadband is abot £20 a month, but for £22 - £25 a month you can get up to 60mb fixed broadband from at least 4 ISPs at the address. I am not a gamer but I do expect to be able to read my daily paper and check my emails without constant waiting. I do think Sykes should check minimum speeds and publish as part of the property information or at least warn its not proper broadband.

  • "We had a fantastic time."

A really unusual property very close to the town centre. Everything we needed was available and the beds were comfortable. It is over 3 floors, so there is a lot of climbing up and down all the time. The off-road parking is awkward but we have an estate car and it was ok with a bit of care. Everywhere seems to be expensive nowadays but I think was pretty good value.

  • "Location very good; upstairs sitting area comfortable and bright, with good views but limited area for eating."

Bathroom spacious with good shower, however water dripping into the bedroom below when is use. Off-road parking space a bonus but difficult to use; somewhat misrepresented as it’s not the one in the photo! Overall adequate for a few days, but well-worn in places and lacking some basics.

We appreciate your feedback and I am glad you enjoyed the location, sitting area and views. Thank you for alerting us to the shower issue on your departure. It was a shame we were not informed before as we could have had this fixed during your stay. We have changed the listing description to clarify the parking space is located to the right of the property, that it is a much bigger space but approached by way of a sharp turn. Thank you for pointing this out. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely 2 weeks at Ivy Cottage."

The property is on 3 floors meaning the lounge has great views across the meadows into Chester. It’s a great spot for anyone wanting to access the river for water sports or rowing. There is also a pub just over the road with a large beer garden, also with great views. The house itself has a stylish interior and very comfortable bedrooms. The bathroom is large, accommodating a family of 5 easily. We also liked the little sun terrace at the front. A big thank you to Megan, the property owner, who was very responsive to any queries and made sure everything was right for our stay.

  • "Good location , we walked or took the bus so the car wasn't used, which was great."

As long as the listing is read properly there should be no surprises, its an older property with all that entails, sash windows, replaced on ground floor but original on 1st, so some road noise, plenty of stairs, but this allows lovely sunset views from kitchen, living room and bathroom. The ground floor shower and toilet is useful but very tight as under the stairs, there is a ventilation system in constant use on the 1st floor, presume to control property moisture levels. All the above is fully explained so guests should be aware before their visit. The front terrace was a nice feature and great for an evening drink...weather permitting, parking on site or in street.Everthing seemed to be supplied, we played with the games in the eve which was great for the family. Its a nice property, not perfect, but we enjoyed our stay there and love Chester

Please pass on our thanks for the Prosecco, biscuits, tea and coffee, they were appreciated - a minor detail, milk would have been useful too. We'd all come a long way and not brought milk for that much needed cuppa. Our negative points would be - one towel per person is mean, and the bed linen would benefit from being ironed!!! Lack of coat hangars, though plenty of hooks. The bathroom in the cupboard was difficult for us to use, but an excellent use of space for those who are contortionists. A bit too much unnecessary clutter. We all enjoyed our stay in Chester and it's a place to re-visit, thank you to the Sykes team for their help.

Unfortunately kitchen was not stocked sufficient for such a large house, or as well as other sykes cottages that we have stayed in. Shortages of teaspoons (only 3), broken and worn out frying pans, no basics provided at all for cooking (oil etc). Internet very temperamental especially in the late afternoon and evening. TV kept losing signal and buffering because of this. No hairdryer although the host did offer to buy one once informed.

Ivy cottage compares favourably with many properties we have stayed in both here & abroad. The open plan top floor & wonderful views make us think it may be worth a return visit in the summer as the proximity to the river & indeed the town would be even better in the sunshine. We loved the local pub as well & won't hesitate to recommend to our friends...Thanks once again to Meg for a fantastic stay !

I will be staying here again for sure. Oh PS i think it was because of the rain and cold at the time over christmas when we were there but I would like to flag with the owner that the front gate after the entry code was inputted once the handle was turned the gate was very stiff and got stuck when trying to open. The only way of getting in was to unfortunately give it a good shove. I think it was because of the wet and the wood maybe could have swelled or dropped slightly. BUT thats all!! About the location

CHESTER

Liverpool 17 miles; Manchester 36 miles.

Chester has quite rightly been described as 'the jewel of the North-West of England'. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the city is that within a very small area there is evidence of every period of history - from the old walls and amphitheatre of Roman times, through medieval churches, Elizabethan timber-framed townhouses and Georgian terraces, to Victorian restorations and 21st century architecture. The city has much to offer the tourist, including excellent shopping in and around the famous Tudor 'Rows' and lovely walks along the Roman Walls, beside the River Dee and through the picturesque Grosvenor Park. Explore Chester's beautiful medieval cathedral, visit Chester Racecourse or spend a day at the world renowned Chester Zoo. Further afield, the stunning Welsh mountains and coastline, the quaint market towns and villages of Cheshire and the Wirral Peninsula with its first class golf courses, are all within easy touring distance, whilst frequent rail services make Liverpool, Manchester and the North Wales coast readily accessible.
