  • "Very disappointing."

The place was 'tired' and shabby with poor facilities i.e. no shower gel or tv's in the rooms. Parking for two as advertised was impossible as everything overgrown and access to to property was outrageous and dangerous especially for small children or the frail. The furnishings were just old without being in keeping with age of the house. Beds were comfortable and the place was clean, but the burn hole in the living room rug and the fact that my daughter had to defrost the freezer added tor a fairly uncomfortable stay

I’m sorry to hear you felt that. It is a traditional house with traditional furniture as can be seen from the photographs. The gardener comes regularly and I think does an excellent job of keeping the garden well maintained. Nobody else has had any difficulty parking two cars in the space in front of the garage. Harry. Very spacious, very clean thanks to Poppy and books galore. It was great for dogs the garden is enclosed, we had 4 dogs they all slept in the utility room. Mevergissey is a short walk away and is a lovely quaint little harbour. We have an electric car and there is a charger in the car park in Mevergissey which was useful. We can recommend the sharksfin for Sunday lunch. We had lots of days out tintagel castle, lost gardens of Heligan, Charles town, Falmouth (to see family), Fistral beach and Crantock beach. We all throughly enjoyed our stay and we will definitely be going back next year

  • "Lovely character home for our family reunion."

But the house desperately in need of some TLC. Damp a problem. Access not great for elderly, disabled and toddlers. But big thanks to housekeeper Poppy. House was clean and showers hot and kitchen was well appointed. Sofas definitely needed replaced. We had brought our own stair gate for 22 month old toddler. But we had a wonderful holiday and saw a lot of Cornwall.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m so pleased you enjoyed your holiday and I agree that Poppy does a fantastic job. As it’s a big, old house the staircase is rather grand and so not really suitable for a stair gate - though we do have a cot and a high chair. Some tiles fell off the roof during a storm. These have been replaced and we are replastering and redecorating. Also we have bought new cushions for the sofas. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay at Penare House."

The house was well equipped and a perfect size for our family of six. Very close to the coast path and for walks to the nearby beach and into Mevagissey. So many books to read and board games were a great addition. Our only negatives were that a little TLC is needed, there is some patchy damp on a few of the internal exterior walls and the sofa as others have mentioned could do with updating, and pillows replacing but these didn't hamper our stay. We hope to return.

The house was beautiful, downstairs toilet seat wobbling and dangerous, wet walls in main bedroom and small bedroom a crack in window in little bedroom, but great location beds comfortable and all towels clean, use of all facilities, would definitely stay again the dogs had a great holiday mine are not allowed upstairs so I bought a gate with me, did think sofas uncomfortable but it was a lovely place, will book again as I have a daughter who lives in Truro and has a child who is limited life so nice to spend time with them so thank you again

  • "We loved the house, full of character."

Unfortunately character means rattly windows during a windy night. Sofas could do with updating along with a slightly larger TV. Other than that we had a great time exploring the local area and coming home to this great house. Andy

Thanks, Andy. So pleased you enjoyed your stay. Sorry about the windows rattling when it got windy. Some of the rubber window wedges seem to have gone missing so we are getting replacements. The TV is a pretty modern "smart" TV - flat screen with an array of channels. I think it's a normal size screen. The sitting room in the property has a traditional beauty and I think a really big TV screen would be unsuitable there. But I take the point about the sofa being due to be replaced so we will look into that. Harry Property Owner

Everything we needed was there, making it a real home from home. We love the area having been coming to Pentewan Sands and Mevagissy for many years on summer holidays but Christmas was very special with all the family and dogs with us. • "We had a lovely stay at Penare House in Mevagissey."

The shower in the main bathroom was amazing, and the highlight of the house for us was the beautiful open log fire. We had the fire on every night, and with the lounge door shut, it made the room wonderful and cosy. The house was nice and clean, and well equipped for our needs. We really appreciated the secure enclosed garden for our 3 dogs, although it's worth noting that the fence at the end of the garden is quite low, so for any particularly 'springy' dogs, it's worth supervising them whilst outside. We also loved the sheer amount of books that the house has to offer - it felt really homely! The house is a short walk down into the town of Mevagissey, which is beautiful and has some lovely shops and places to eat. There are plenty of vegan food options which was wonderful too! Poppy was very helpful and welcoming, and was on standby should we have needed anything (which we didn't!). We hope to be back soon!

The house is spacious and well equipped and a new load of wood arrived during our stay. It was very clean and Poppy was very quick to help with any of our questions. Sadly our only gripe is that for a large room and for the number of people it can accommodate, the TV is too small and is a struggle to enjoy.

  • "The house has a relaxed feel to it which makes it enjoyable for large groups (there were 8 of us - 3 families and a dog) but the pictures are out of date as Sykes market the property as being modern inside and light and contemporary."

This is not the case at all and the property now appears to be filled with contents from an elderly relatives deceased estate - being 1000s of very old and musty smelling books and dark book cases that are often falling apart. These books have been put everywhere - literally in every space possible - and that includes even in kitchen drawers, meaning that there is only 1 cupboard that can be used in the kitchen for a house that sleeps 9. The property has no drying rack or airer available for clothes, yet it offers a washing machine and tumble dryer. The towels given to guests are also very thin and old and there are no additional ones for the communal areas, like a hand towel in the bathroom. As with the other comments, the house keeper is very helpful and friendly and the property was left clean so in that regard it was good. The house itself would also be good if it was at a price that reflected the condition and the pictures told the true state. It was those two factors against the reality that has caused my disappointment. If the owner spent just a few pounds on a drying rail (as has been suggested by other guests several times) and left some storage (or even bought some more shelving) for the paying guests, then the house would be worth the rental, or possibly even more. There was also an large deep wooden chest full of someones dirty clothes left in the house, presumably the owners. I only opened it whilst looking for a dustpan and brush (also not provided) but I'd suggest to the owner that personal items like these are padlocked.

Thank you for your feedback. As a result, we are getting new, thick towels. There are a lot of books in the house which some guests appreciate. But I agree we should update the photographs to show the bookcases. The dustpan and brush is under the sink. The drying rack is under the stairs. I'm sorry you had trouble finding them. We will add a note in the guide book for guests about this. Our housekeeper, Poppy, is always very happy to help guests with such queries. Property Owner

Thank you for the feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Penare House. We will get a new frying pan and hope you would agree that the kitchen supplies are extensive and of good quality. There wasn't actually a leak in the roof but our builder has treated the damp patches. The climate in Cornwall does make this a perennial problem in period houses. There was a huge disparity between the master suite and all of the other bedrooms. I’m sure it’s fine for families with small children but not for adults all of whom had paid the same rate. We had a problem with the boiler which was fixed immediately. We would have appreciated rinse aid and salt for dishwasher, more toilet rolls and washing powder but perhaps this is to be expected. All in all, if the welcome pack had included these items it would have been appreciated.

Thank you for the feedback. While all the bedrooms are generously sized it is quite true that the bedroom with the four poster is the largest. We provide "all in one" tablets for the dishwasher and so salt and rinse aid are not required. While we do provide washing powder and lavatory paper - as well as dishwasher tables - guests will sometimes need top up on supplies during their stay Property Owner

The front bedroom with the four poster and the living room were so draftee from around the windows I had to go round all four windows stuffing the gaps with newspaper to cut the draft, once I had completed this the two front rooms warmed up nicely. Penare House offers generous proportions and a hilltop position with sea views and convenient access to the beach and coastal footpath in the fishing village of Mevagissey on Cornwall's golden Riviera coastline.

It is a handsome property for large parties but equally great for couples looking to enjoy a romantic break.

Arranged over three levels the interior smoulders with an understated elegance.

Perhaps the most striking feature is the master en-suite bedroom with its ocean views, antique four poster bed and chaise longue or, if it is an atmosphere for entertaining, then the kitchen/diner which boasts a wood burner beside a farmhouse dining table, every conceivable appliance including a range cooker and doors to the enclosed rear garden equipped with a brick barbecue and patio furniture.

Adults can retire to the comfy sitting room and the warmth of an open fire in the cooler months and for children there is an entertainment room on the top floor equipped with a second TV, wireless broadband, hi-fi, games and a pair of tripod mounted binoculars.

The property is full of books, from new to very old, with a plethora of subjects, so put your feet up and get lost in a few.

Mevagissey village and harbour, which still operates a small fleet and pleasure boats, is a ten minute walk along narrow streets lined with fishermen cottages, old inns, restaurants and galleries.

Convenient for the beaches at Polstreath, Pentewan and Gorran Haven and within a 10 mile radius of the renowned Eden Project, the award winning Lost Gardens of Heligan, the exclusive waterfront town of Fowey and harbourside village of St Mawes.

Penare House caters exceptionally well for families and offers bespoke pricing for couples during the low season.
