"Great property, beautiful location."
-
"Very well equipped cottage with everything we needed."
Very quiet location and restful sleep assured. We’re retired and healthy so the half mile undulating walk to excellent pub not a problem. Many other super walks from the doorstep. Guaranteed parking for 1 car assisted. Great base for close visiting Monmouth, Ross, Hereford, Abergavenny and Gloucester Docks. A super holiday.
-
"The cottage although comfortable was looking a little tired, the kitchen and bathroom could do with a refurbishment."
A number of glasses were chipped or cracked and perhaps the crockery and utensils could also do with an upgrade.
-
"The cottage is in a great position looking out over the River in a raised position."
It was very clean and comfortable and had absolutely everything that you will need for a comfortable stay. We loved our short stay there and would love to stay there again.
-
"Spent 5 days in cottage."
Beautifully decorated, very comfortable and warm. Immaculately clean and so well equipped. Fabulous location. Only one very minor issue, shower was great but water pressure not very good in washbasin in bathroom but that's a very minor issue.. All in all had a relaxing few days and going to book again next year. Thoroughly recommend. Scenery wonderful. Fabulous autumn colours.
-
"The cottage is conveniently located near the woodland and many walks can be taken from the door which is a real boon for dog owners."
The facilities are adequate, though the lack of some kitchen equipment is a frustration. The fact that one must step straight in from the outside onto the sitting room carpet is a worry with a wet dog! This meant cleaning had to take place outside the front door, in the rain, which is not great. Nevertheless, we had a good time exploring the area, despite less than friendly weather conditions. We would stay again, with some reservations .
-
"We had a great relaxing time staying in the cottage."
There are lots of things to do and see with lovely walks out from the cottage, it is great to be able to do things without having to get in a car and drive. The hand ferry was a great experience over to the Saracens Head with good food available there and also at Ye Old Ferrie Inn a ten minute walk away. The cottage was really clean and well organised with great local amenities available. I would really recommend staying here and definitely would go back!

Nothing I can fault with this cottage,we just love everything about it, we have been coming to it for so many years now definitely see you next year,
-
"I would like to have been warned of the mainly single track road leading up to the cottage."
-
"Good location, nice and quiet."
Cozy well equipped cottage, nice and clean.
-
"The cottage was very clean and tidy with comfortable beds and seating."
It was also very well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery and kitchen equipment. Nice to have decent clothes hangers - so often it is nasty wire ones. The “little details” had been well thought out including books, ornaments etc. to make it feel like home from home. The small courtyard behind the house is dog secure. There are communal gardens which are well kept with seating provided - perfect for a cuppa and a good book. It was really quiet and peaceful, perfect for unwinding, resting and enjoying some beautiful countryside.
-
"Lovely little cottage in beautiful part of the world."
Definitely recommend
-
"A lovely, cosy cottage in a beautiful location with lots of fabulous walks and plenty of great places to eat and drink on the doorstep."
-
"The cottage was lovely, super-clean, very warm and cozy."
It was really well equipped. We had a wonderful stay, location was ideal. Bedrooms & beds were very comfy & warm. Cooker was fab! Thank you & hope to visit again soon!
-
"The cottage was extremely comfortable - beds were fantastic."
Cottage had everything needed The location of the cottage is beautiful. Close to several pubs and wonderful walks.
-
"Loved our stay in this perfect little cottage."
Peaceful location in a beautiful part of the country that we get drawn back to time and time again. Wi-Fi works well which is great as no phone reception up there. Everything needed was available though we could have done with some more pillows.
-
"Very comfortable stay at a stunning spot"
-
"The property was great and suited our needs perfectly."
The property had most if not all the items required, even things we forgot. The communal gardens were lovely and parking was no problem. Would really recommend the cottage and the area.
-
"Pretty much perfect."
Stunning location, all facilities needed were available in house. Just the right size property and felt truly like home away from home. WiFi excellent speed too, making up for absence of mobile phone reception in the area.
-
"Excellent cottage."
-
"Lovely cosy cottage."
Good location for walking with lots of walks straight from the door. Two good pubs, Ye Old Ferry Inn and the Saracens Head closes by. Hand pulled ferry to Saracens Head or can walk round by the bridge.
-
"We have been to the same cottage for many years and wouldn’t stay anywhere else, everything you need it’s like home from home, thank you again for a great holiday we will definitely be back again new year."
-
"My daughter and I absolutely loved staying at this cottage and I emediately booked again when I arrived home."
-
"The property was very small and nowhere near the standard of previous sykes properties we have stayed in."
Fine really, but bathroom was poor, black mould on grout and on shower screen bottom was not so inviting. Incredible location and views. Would definitely not stay at that particular cottage again however.
-
"Really enjoyed our stay."
The cottage was warm and cosy and well equipped, which was a very pleasant surprise. Thank you.
-
"Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting."
I’m very grateful that the kind property owner let us have a later check out time to avoid the worst of the storm, as we were in a red weather warning zone. Thank you for your support, we had a lovely time staying at the cottage. We hope to return one day.
-
"An excellent, clean and comfortable cottage."
Very homely and great attention to detail. Everything you could need was there.
-
"We felt that this cottage is loved and appreciated the attention to detail…."
. It was fitted out like a home with decorative features, useful items and products in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as local information. Instructions re the use of equipment were clear and well thought through. The owners kindly replied to our queries swiftly and were helpful in giving up to date information. Sykes’ messaging was useful, timely and appropriate. Thank you!
-
"Comfortable cottage with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and an all round cosy feel."
Lovely listening to the owls in the valley at night. We would definitely return in the future.
-
"Lovely comfortable cottage in a beautiful area."
Lots to explore and do. A Dvd player would have been useful for the kids dvds in evenings, especially with the limited wifi.
-
"Firstly sykescottage people amazing when booking very helpful and friendly great ..."
Firstly sykescottage people amazing when booking very helpful and friendly great service again, Wow again we have been to this cottage many times now, it’s great everything you need in the cottage, beautiful walks pubs right on your doorstep,if you don’t fancy walking there is a pull boat that takes you across wye river,we are definitely coming back very very soon, thank you again
-
"Loved the cottage, the area, didn’t want to come home."
Weather improved from the second day. Would love to return. Thank you to the owner also.
-
"This is a lovely well equipped cottage in a beautiful location."
And much easier to access now the road is open again. We had a lovely stay thank you!
-
"Access was a nightmare, from remarks in visitors book main access road has been out for at least 2 years and other road not much better than a track and overgrown in places, key safe is 1ft from ground, impossible to use without kneeling down, impossible at night without a torch and magnifying glass !"
! could not lock front door from inside, this has already appeared on your website so still not fixed, could have been cleaner in places, cutlery drawer had bits of food in , probably because it could not be opened more than 6inches because of washing machine controls, put towels on a 90deg wash, think they were originally white not dirty grey colour, dirty streaks under wash basin in bathroom, mould growing on some of the window frames, oven needed a clean, light on extractor fan not working, was generally as described , cosy with good views but this did not compensate for the access road, had to make sure wing mirrors were folded in every time we used the road as would have lost them, instruction left in cottage said to empty bins and place bags in shed at the end of the row, could not get access to shed, also to put used linens in supplied pink bag, (no bag) so was a let down as previous rental we had at Launceston was great
-
"We have been to this same cottage for the last few years Definitely booking again hopefully April 2021 time now, everything about it’ is perfect the location for walking, eating out No need to use your car once there, no more I can say just perfect, thank you to Sykes too everyone who I have spoken to are very helpful great customer service."
Thank you again will be in touch soon to book again

"The place is very nice and comfy and a stone's throw from the walking paths."
It was clean and we were left some biscuits and a pint of milk, which was lovely. There is everything you need including dishwasher tablets, laundry tabs, washing up liquid, hand sanitiser and anti-bac wipes. The stairs are quite creaky so walk on the edges if you are trying not to wake anyone up ! Unfortunately the front door did not lock from the inside which we reported to Sykes Cottages but hadn't been fixed by the time we left (to be honest we didn't report it until our second day as we couldn't get hold of them !! Their telephone number is 01244 352059 which I searched for as it doesn't appear anywhere on their website). A couple of things you need to know, which are nothing to do with the owner of the cottage, are the ferry run by the Saracens Head is NOT RUNNING (as at 07.08.20) due to the floods they had in Feb which damaged it. This means to walk to the other side of the river is a brisk 45-50 minute walk. Also the road, which other people have mentioned, is extremely narrow (we thought it was a footpath !) and you need to be quite a confident driver to get down it. There are a couple of places where you need to turn your wing mirrors in and some of the passing places are actually where cars park so you cannot pull in there. It is a two way road and luckily we didn't meet anyone coming the other way, but something to bear in mind. The above is not moaning about the place, I just thought it would be useful for people to know about the ferry and narrow road. We would happily stay here again

"This cottage is in a fabulous location in order to explore the area of Symonds Yat East and West."
The ferry across was not operational due to flood damage a few months ago, so there was no option but to drive out. Herein lies the biggest drawback from staying in the cottage. The main access road to the cottages has been closed for 2 years awaiting resolution to some works dispute. Although it does state in the listing there is only a narrow byway to navigate, I think this should be more prominent so a proper informed decision can be made. I only spotted this after booking and was unable to cancel. I'm a driving instructor and even I found it the most anxiety- provoking drive. Mirrors need to be pulled in. My car just about got through but problems come if a car is coming the other way. There are very few passing places and you have to be confident in reversing into these. I would return to the cottage for another holiday, but only when the proper access road has reopened. Once out, there are some amazing walks and views. A must is to climb up the path from The Saracens pub to Yats Rock where views across the valley are spectacular. Lots of lovely walks around the area.
-
"This is our 2nd visit to this cottage and it is a really lovely place, ( credit to the owners), in a beautiful area."
It is unfortunate that the usual road to the property is closed and the alternative, (a footpath), is so narrow that you have to pull the wing mirrors in but that mustn't take away from a wonderful relaxing and peaceful place. We came home 2 days early mainly due to the quietness of the towns and the lack of amenities due to this horrible virus. Hopefully we will be able to go back sometime in the future.
-
"The present road to the cottage is terrifyingly narrow which can put you off exploring the neighbourhood."
-
"We were saddened to hear of the ongoing road closure causing difficulty with access for all the visitors."
-
"“The cottage is lovely; it is quaint, but well equipped, comfortable and homely."
Despite the fact that most of the other cottages were occupied by other holiday makers, and, indeed, some residents; the whole area was really natural and quiet and “away from it all”; the calm, quiet location was perfect for a much needed break.” The area around the cottages was clean, tidy and well kept. In fact the whole area was a pleasure to meander around. There were numerous walks and/or mountain bike routes and plenty of opportunities to canoe hire and paddle down the river; something we thoroughly enjoyed. A walk to the “Ferrie Inn” on the west bank of the Wye was pleasant and easy and a trip across to the east bank to “The Saracens” by ferry was an optional experience too. We noted other review comments about the narrow byeway access which we found to be grossly exaggerated; yes it is somewhat unusual to find such narrow roads these days and to some drivers they may find them “a bit tricky”. However, there are still a number of tourist areas in various parts of the UK (such as parts of the West Country, The Lake District and also parts of Scotland for example) where access is no better than here but to be honest if you enjoy getting off the beaten track then this is an ideal location so do not let the reviews put you off. We would happily go back again despite the narrow road access.
-
"The cottage is really lovely, very comfortable furniture and presented in a homely earthy tones and we appreciated the calm and quiet even though there were people in almost all the other cottages."
The communal grounds are excellent, very well kept, not fussy just really natural, tidy and a pleasure. Walking to the Ferrie Inn for a drink was easy and using the ferry to go over to The Saracens was great. The walk around via the bridge was a good couple of hours there and back but nice on a late afternoon. Pity all the pubs don’t offer all day food in the high season. We would love to go back BUT not until the proper road access is fixed, using that narrow byeway is a bit tricky honestly and not really acceptable as you can’t just pop in and out when you want to, we would never drive it in the dark as you’d definitely damage your car. A little car is okay but I wouldn’t do it again.....actually something stinks about the whole situation because it’s been going on for nearly two years and they haven’t fixed it yet!

"The cottage is in the most perfect position in Symonds Yat."
With the most beautiful scenery you could wish for. Lots of walks just off your door step along the riverside. There is no need to go anywhere else. The cottage itself was fully equipped, clean and spacious, with a nice small garden at the back. Lovely landscape gardens at the front too. The drive in was a bit tight, hence why we left the car at the cottage for the whole week of our stay. But well worth the drive, as you don't need to leave, its too beautiful! The Saracens Head Pub is just across the river via hand ferry, and a lovely pub just down the way called Ye Old Ferrie Inn, which was our stopping point every day after long walks. We hired a Canadian Canoe locally, who took us up to Ross-on-Wye, and we paddled 14 miles back to Symonds Yat. It was great fun, with beautiful views on the way. Yat Rock is a must for awesome views of the river and Valley, and where the peregrines nest. And the Seven Sisters too, if you can find them are worth the trek with gorgeous views of the winding river and Biblins Campsite. Symonds Yat is the best place Ive been to, and definitely my favourite holiday Ive ever had! We shall return! Thank you for our lovely stay.
-
"The listing warns you about the limited width access to the cottage - however, be warned that this limited width access is about 0."
7 miles long and the first time you drive it, its quite worrying and I would try to avoid doing this in the dark the first time.
-
"This was a great holiday in a fantastic location, the cottage was lovely with good parking and nice view, the walks along the river were great and 3 pub close by for meals out, I would stay in this cottage again if visiting that area."
-
"Accommodation was extremely clean, attractively presented, magnificent location, comfortable beds , well located, pleasant gardens."
Additions to property could include A grill pan - essential DVD player and DVDs as most rentals include these. Otherwise would highly recommend this property to friends and family.
-
"There was no grill pan which made grilling a little difficult and no cooking trays."
These items would have been useful.
-
"The cottage is lovely."
Beautiful peaceful setting. Vehicle access however is not for the faint hearted. Whilst this is out of your control, it should be stressed. It does however make for lighter traffic.
-
"A lovely well equipped cottage, stunning setting, one of the best if not the best cottage we have stayed in."
The only negative was the weather.
-
"Access to the cottage is a bit of a nightmare, otherwise perfect."
The cottage is one of the best we've ever stayed in. The owner has put such a lot of thought into making it comfortable and welcoming.
-
"A lovely holiday home."
The access was not a problem as there are good walks around and two pubs nearby.
-
"Road closure, restricted access Via narrow detour."
Nearest shop 1.5 miles away.Beautiful location otherwise.
-
"Apart from the obvious problem of the road - although interesting that we were only told about it a week before when it had happened 3 months before - we were very happy with the cottage."
The accessibility to the river and the cycle/walking paths was great which, as getting out was not good with bikes on the car, was a bonus. Only one niggle, the towels had been washed using conditioner which made them lovely and fluffy but no good for their intended use. Please ask the owner not to use conditioner, a dryer fluffs just as well. We had to go out and buy clothes wash powder just to wash all the towels.
-
"It was excellent."
-
"Lovely cottage, with a beautiful view and surroundings."
Thank you for a lovely weekend.
-
"Lovely cottage beautiful location, the accommodation was lovely and warm on arrival and stayed warm all weekend, the view from the front bedroom window was great across the wye valley, waking up in the morning with the bedroom window open you could hear the birds and water fowl going about their business and more importantly no road or traffic noise!"
If you want to get away from everything and enjoy peace and quiet plus nice walks, this is the place
-
"The cottage was extremely comfortable, cosy and tastefully decorated in a lovely peaceful location with all of the facilities available."
Last Thursday 23rd, I looked up the cottage to see if it was still available for another few days. Unfortunately it wasn't as we would have enjoyed a longer stay.
-
"Good cottage in an excellent location."
-
"Great location, walking from doorstep, lots to see and do, very quiet, but near to pubs."
-
"Directions to the cottage need to be a little more explicit."
-
"One of your better cottages extremely well equipped and very comfort show"
-
"The directions for getting to the cottage were unclear."
When we were actually on the very narrow road to the cottage the instructions were not specific enough.
-
"Fantastic location."
Beautiful, cosy cottage and very relaxing place to be. Everything was provided for in the cottage even a welcome decorated Christmas tree, milk and biscuits!
-
"Very nice cottage in an excellent location."
Symonds Yat is a beautiful spot with great walks and lovely scenery. There are several excellent pubs close by. Cottage very comfortable with great wifi.
