  • "We had such a wonderful stay at this lovely cottage!"

Jules, the owner, was incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The cottage itself was absolutely charming and cozy, especially with the log-burning fire that made it feel so warm and inviting. The kitchen was a fantastic bonus—fully equipped with everything you might need if you wish to cook, making it easy to prepare meals and feel completely at home. There's a cute little café and village shop just across the road, perfect for a morning coffee or some treats. The whole area was so peaceful, ideal for walks, with a lovely pub just down the road. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to unwind, and we’ll definitely be booking again!

We're delighted you had such a wonderful stay and also loved the peaceful location. We look forward to welcoming you again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

Jules and Garth made us feel very welcome and Jules has a wealth of useful local knowledge. The cottage is gorgeous! It was clean, comfortable and quite spacious for a one bedroom property. We had everything we needed and Jules was always on hand if we didn’t, although our privacy was very much respected while were there. Not being able to park on site was not a problem at all as there was a very quiet side street just across the road with plenty of space to park. The village shop is a real gem. It serves lovely coffee and cakes and stocks many essential and non essential supplies. There are some beautiful local walks and the village pub serves great food. For us this was the perfect location from which to explore the north Cotswolds. We wouldn’t hesitate to book The Old Reading Room again.

  • "It was a joy to stay at the Old Reading Room and it has everything you need for a cosy stay in the Cotswolds."

Including a comfortable bed, flawless bathroom, well-equipped kitchen and a cute wood burning stove. There are lots of guides inside aboyt the area and local walks - much of which you can't find online. We had a great day doing the picturesque circular walk that starts from almost next door to the property. The village, Bledington (actually just down the road from Stow-in-the-Wold), is quiet and quaint. It has quintessential Cotswolds houses and a busy village pub that serves very good food. It's also a short drive from lots of other pretty villages and things to do. The Old Reading Room's owner, Jules, is wonderful: warm, helpful and very knowledgeable about anything you could need. But she is also discreet and the property feels perfectly private. Thank you for a wonderful holiday!

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at The Old Reading Room. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay at The Old Reading Room and from the sounds of it, you explored quite a vast area of the Cotswold. The place is inviting and quaint with everything you need for a wonderful stay away. The kitchen is bright and airy, leading into a warm and cost lounge with a high ceiling, log burner and comfy leather sofa. The upstairs mezzanine bedroom and ensuite shower room is lovely and always affords you a good nights sleep in the large and comfortable bed. Jules and Garth are the perfect hosts. They are very knowledgable about the area and are lovely people who make your stay extra special. Thank you again, and we will certainly be visiting before the year is out. x

  • "Certainly do not advise staying in this pkace"

Garth and I are both bewildered and bemused by your one liner feedback (and I think you meant 'place' right?) and we would seriously question the 'triggers' and motivations behind this review. In all our time since we have holiday let 'The Old Reading Room' with Manor Cottages and Sykes (dating back to 2007), we can count on one hand, with fingers to spare, the less positively inclined reviews; something which we are both proud of and passionate about. The website, as with our guest book (which you will have seen and surely made you think twice about your own experience), confirms a plethora of positive, glowing comments, backed up by the fact that we have numerous returning guests from both the UK and overseas (and many of whom I am pleased to say have become firm friends over the years). We deal in facts and not fiction or the fantastical. You will remember that, despite not having received a call from yourselves in advance of your arrival (which is usual procedure and which, importantly, allows us to understand any particular guest requirements), we accommodated your early arrival by letting you gain access to the property two hours ahead of the allotted time (a gesture we thought you would appreciate given the inclement weather on that particular day). You will also, no doubt, recollect that realising there was no kindling, I immediately jumped into my car and visited both the local farm and garage and resolved the situation by ensuring you had smaller sized logs from our private log store, as well as supplying ample larger logs for what is a 'starter' log burner pack (the clue here being in the 'starter' description). Manor Cottages efficiently manage the changeovers and carry out the cleaning of the cottage, and we have a cleaning team who spend a minimum of three hours each time unless I specifically request additional deep cleaning. I have learnt both in my professional life and personal life to treat people as they treat you (and again you will see from the high volume of wonderful client comments who endorse the property that there is no lack of positive interaction and engagement). Which makes us question the validity of this review which I believe to be prompted by a less than positive behavioural motivation. Albeit, I acknowledge, that you do come across folk in life who are professional career complainants. The learn here is that you can't please all of the people all of the time (despite best endeavours) but when 97/98% of guests are at opposite ends of the poll stating how thrilled they were with their stay, and regularly returning, then you do have to question the near singular negative feedback and accept it is the exception to the rule for whatever reasons only known to that individual. Of course, there could be something about expectation management here. We are a Cotswoldian country cottage offering lots of charm and a warm welcome not the Claridges hotel :) Property Owner

Cosy cottage in a great location. The en-suite bathroom was somewhat dated, furniture/tiling etc. Shower door difficult to open/close, shower floor slippery when wet. Extremely tight approach to/from allocated parking space, but manageable with care! The above notwithstanding, we would go back.

Thank you for your comments and it is great that you enjoyed the cosiness of the cottage in what is a great location. We do have plans to update the bathroom at the end of this season, although we have actually just had a new shower fitted. The shower door is purposefully tight in order to prevent water spilling out onto the bathroom floor and there is a bath mat provided in the wardrobe should guests require this. Unfortunately, as the main cottage is a listed building and has a feature of interest (bread oven) attached there is very little we can do about the approach although we have welcomed guests with large 4 x 4s and have had no issues to date. The property

The Old Reading Room is an exceptionally well presented, personal and romantic country cottage (three proposals have taken place here to date) set in the heart of this lovely and tranquil village.

The cottage which itself is contemporary and light, and fantastically located to explore the Cotswolds, has been meticulously restored (and maintained) to a very high specification from what was originally the old school room where local children would have practised their reading and music.

The cottage provides light, airy and extremely welcoming accommodation set across two floors, with a number of traditional features balancing out a clean and modern feel, including traditional Cotswold stone walls, with a clear view woodburner and pretty beams.

Externally the property has access to a peaceful, secluded country cottage garden.

The Old Reading Room is situated in the heart of Bledington, an archetypal Cotswold village with a quintessential village green, attractive stream with Bledington ducks, together with the acclaimed Kings Head pub.

In our opinion this is a stunning English Country Cottage that is certain to delight.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.

About the location

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD

Bourton-on-the-Water 4 miles; Stratford upon Avon 15 miles.

The highest town in the Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises olde worlde England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly Farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antique shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of Stow, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way, Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close to the town. Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' as the River Windrush runs through the centre, lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of the most popular Cotswold villages. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are all within easy reach and make a great day out. Cheltenham (20 miles away) is, architecturally, the most complete regency town in England. A spa town with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse-racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. At other times of year, it is host to literature, jazz, classical music, science and food and drink festivals. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called 'The City of Dreaming Spires’ has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within easy reach, making Stow-on-the-Wold an ideal base.
