  • "We loved staying here."

The cottage was warm when we arrived, after an awful Irish Sea crossing and a windy drive across country. Mrs Heraty arrived shortly after we'd unpacked, and it was nice to be greeted by her. The cottage is ideal for the 2 of us plus dog. The daily challenge of getting the turf fire going gaves us plenty of laughs, but once going it was glorious. Remembering the cottage is over 200yrs old, it makes a perfect base to travel around Mayo and beyond. We will be back next year, God willing.

  • "Lovely little cottage."

Quite small but it is very cosy and warm especially with the log burner fire. You are located quite far out from the town but the views are stunning. It was clean and had all the facilities that you need. Would recommend for anyone who wants to stay in a traditional Irish cottage and appropriate for all year round what ever the weather. We had a lovely time!

  • "We had a lovely stay at the cottage!"

It felt remote and rustic to us, we loved the views and the sheep. Elizabeth was wonderful. She came over to help us get a fire going and we really enjoyed talking with her. Definitely memorable. Bring all your groceries, enjoy a peaceful time!

  • "Very disappointed."

Wouldn’t have taken too much for the grass to have been mown or a few flowers to have been planted. Dirty stove which obviously hadn’t been cleaned either inside or out in a very long time. Spent first couple of nights coughing for England. We cleaned it ourselves in the end. Dirty plates and cutlery. Even more disgusting duvets covered with marks and stains. Went to Tesco in Westport in desperation to buy new ones. Everything done on the cheap.

  • "A birthday treat for me."

I did not wish for a city break or anything elaborate. The cottage fitted the bill perfectly. Quiet, beautful views of the mountains an idyllic spot. Some nice features are the large bedroom and the compact one, the ten minute walk to the local public house (be sure to take a good strong torch with you) and simply chilling out in front of a roaring turf fire. Totally my scene - loved it.

  • "What a beautiful little cottage."

Stayed with family and we loved it. Very warm and cosy with the stove and plenty of turf and logs provided. Our bed was comfy and although there's not a huge amount of space it was perfect for 5 people and our doggie with 2 sharing doubles and a single. Walking distance to Breslin's pub which looked closed but was open so you should check that out for a nice Guinness. Also perfect for looking at the stars and managed to capture the milky way on my camera it was so dark outside. Westport is a great town to eat and drink and shop. You should also do the nearby Sheffrey Pass scenic route drive as the photos from the top are amazing and there's a picnic table if you want to eat lunch up there.

  • "True character cottage, lovely peaceful setting, but very quirky, and description of the property as compact is misleading."

Trying to cram in more beds, and an extra bedroom, has resulted in an impossibly narrow passage which means sliding in sideways to access the bathroom. Hard to imagine how 5 people (bed capacity) would fare in the rest of the cottage which was fine for 1-2 but in winter would be cramped for more. No doubt a lovely place in spring and summer but in winter the cottage was seriously cold, pre-set storage heaters and woodburning stove took the edge off but no more. Owners could not have predicted or helped power cuts, loss of wifi and phone signal due to storms, but it would be good to provide torch and candles in case of such eventualities (as other properties do as a matter of course). And given lack of phone signal, either to know where owners lived to be able to contact them and/or for them to check that all was ok and keep whoever is in the cottage updated (only the owner can report loss of power and other services).

We found the stove excellent and were warm and cosy for all our stay. Our hosts made us feel very welcome all through our stay and we found the cottage well located for exploring much of Mayo. We loved the traditional feel of the cottage and think it's perfectly suited for 2 or 3 guests.

  • "After a warm and friendly reception, very helpfull to repair de toiletpot that was lose, we found out that the cottage was very basic."

We knew the cottage was 200 years old, and we loverd the way it looked, but the way the entrance to the second bedroom and the bathroom was situated was very narrow. The bathroom was very oldfashioned, the shower was a claustrofobic experience. Kitchen was very basic with hardly any space to walk and use the counter. The fridge was falling apart and made a lot of noise. We think the cottage was way to highpriced in relation to what we got for 800 pounds. Now having holiday in our second Sykes-cottage, for what we paid exactly the same amount of money, we have a perfect, luxurious cottage.

  • "We really enjoyed our break away in this beautiful cottage."

The location was perfect and not too far from the town and beaches. The only downside would be from looking at the pictures of the cottage on the site, it looked really remote. However it is right beside other houses. Although the neighbours were lovely, we would have loved if it was more remote and quiet. Overall the cottage was beautiful and we would highly recommend it.

  • "The thatched cottage was quaint and comfortable."

It is located in a quiet country area with stunning views of the nearby mountains. We loved the country sounds particularly the sheep and lambs calling to each other. It provided us with a week of peace and tranquility as it is set on a most private site. The cottage was a haven of cool during the recent heatwave.

  • "While the pictures and description of the cottage are relatively accurate (although while we were there, the cottage was never as bright as shown in the photos), they omit certain crucial aspects, which detracted very much from our stay in the cottage."

Most of the furnishings, including the kitchen, the beds and bedding and the shower, are old and grubby. The shower cubicle does not fit in the space allotted to it, so it is impossible to open the doors properly. The worst aspect, however, is the division of the lower part of the cottage into the windowless shower room and a claustrophobic double bedroom, these two rooms separated by a wedge-shaped “hall” which tapers to the width of a small sweeping brush. It is all done on the cheap, with ugly wooden panelling and sliding doors. Access to the shower room is only really possible when the bedroom sliding door is open. We didn't notice much traditional Irish charm inside the cottage, but if you have nostalgia for grim 1980s bedsits, this is the place for you.

She made us scones on arrival and was very helpful. Very quaint little cottage with a lot of character. Very quiet, comfy beds, good facilities, stunning views. Very small - would be fine for a couple or family of 3 but we were a family of 5 and it felt quite cramped. Second bedroom was tiny but master bedroom was massive. We stayed there for 3 nights, and whilst we did like it, that was enough for us as we had seen everything there was to see in the local area. Location was good for exploring the local area.

The setting and views across the valley are amazing. The cottage was well situated for us to enjoy cycling the Greenway from Newport to Achill, and by contrast enjoy a ferry trip to Inishmore and Inishbofin in the opposite direction. Near to Connemara and Nephin Beg. Just 45 minutes drive from Knock Airport. The cottage is in need of some update internally, however the owner did give us a very warm welcome, with home made scones, and a peat fire lit in the log/peat burner. We had a very enjoyable holiday despite a fair bit of rain.

Cold building but peat fire excellent and supply of peat endless. TV and seating old and shabby (though clean), need replacing. Lovely dining table though covered in rough plastic. Table mats natural fibre would cure at once. Lighting in sitting room very gloomy, side lights would cure. Lovely scones on arrival. Would be lovely property if given a bit of attention.
