  • "It was a very special trip to Ilfracombe for a family wedding at tunnel beaches."

I read several negative reviews of this property. Situated in a perfect location Myrtle House is a lovely period property. The owners sent me a nice welcome message and there were some cakes and milk left in the fridge. With ample room for all the family, we never felt cramped. However, please read the following carefully! The current lack of games room did disappoint our 3 children, there is a hidden darts board, kids multi play table (located at the top of the 3 storey staircase!) with lack of stair gates to the stairs apart from one at the very bottom. The major issue with this property (I am a builder) is the plumbing. The owners state in a previous review response that the plumbing has alway been like this. The waste pipe from the shower room runs to the courtyard which then leaks onto the outside seating as a result of a major blockages in the sewage system or lack of vent pipe. Every morning that we woke and entered the kitchen the smell of raw sewage was over bearing enough to have to open up all the windows and doors. This problem needs considerable investment. It was quite horrible for 7 people to use a shower with a tray full of dirty water taking over an hour to drain. We also felt that the property could do with a deep clean with attention needed under the sofa cushions and windows that were filthy. I feel that the property could be a wonderful asset to the owners, however there are some issues that need resolving in order to keep a good name. Please consider these last few reviews before booking.

  • "Unfortunately our stay at Myrtle House was disappointing."

I had read the reviews of previous guests about cleanliness and maintenance and trusted that these would have been dealt with but they weren't. Upon arrival I had to call the property manager to say that the property did not appear to have been cleaned. It was appreciated that cleaners came swiftly and it did make a difference. However, the issues that other guests have mentioned still persist - dirty cushions for the outdoor seating rammed in the downstairs toilet, broken toilet seat (and window propped up by toilet roll), shower that doesn't drain (unsustainable with 6 people having daily showers), filthy windows (ad to keep curtains drawn they were so disgusting), dirty garden (did not bother to sit outside or let the dog out either). It's a shame; it could be a lovely property to stay at but it doesn't seem any care and attention is dedicated to it's upkeep.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. The windows have been cleaned, but unfortunately, due to the property's seafront location, we occasionally experience seagull mess, which can be difficult to prevent. The garden cushions are regularly washed, and we store them in the downstairs bathroom to protect them from outdoor elements. The toilet seat was promptly fixed by our maintenance team on the day of your check-in. We appreciate your comments and will continue to work on improving our guests' experience. Property Owner

  • "The key mistake was that the overview talked of five bedrooms - there are only four."

It was not made clear that the parking does not suit an SUV. A note on 24 hour car parks would have been helpful; these are not expensive.

  • "Our initial disappointment was to find that there is not a game room as listed and pictured on your website, with the age of our children this was a big bonus for us to have at the house and after getting in touch about it were to be told this needs to removed from the website as it's not available, the pool table is great but very misleading as to what is actually available on your website."

A few issues with cleanliness of windows, curb appeal of the house and garden these would just need to be tidied and cleaned to make a much better impression. We had also previously read reviews that mentioned broken toilet seat and taps not working this is still the case, which is again disappointing when it has been previously mentioned that it has not been put right. The location of the property is fantastic, comfortable beds and seating areas all in all a great stay with only a few issues that could easily be put right.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We sincerely apologise for the confusion and disappointment regarding the game room. We also apologise for the maintenance concerns you encountered. Your comments about the windows, curb appeal, broken toilet seat, and taps have been noted. We will address these issues immediately to ensure they do not affect future guests. On a positive note, we're pleased to hear you enjoyed the location and found the beds and seating areas comfortable. Your overall enjoyment of your stay is important to us, and we appreciate your suggestions for improvement. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future with an improved experience. Property Owner

  • "I don't believe that Sykes Cottages scrutinised the listing that I stayed in."

It gave it a 4* rating, perhaps it was 4/100? I payed nearly £3,000 for a 3 night stay, but had I known the condition of the property I wouldn't have paid £300. None of the toilet seats fitted the toilets, all were hanging off. The main bathroom and toilet had no lock on the door. The shower drain was blocked (as stated in a review from 2023 where the owner responded that this would be rectified) so shower time was limited because the tray would fill up rapidly, no plug on bathroom sink, a bannister spindle was missing on the first floor landing leaving a gap for a child or dog, the downstairs toilet was full of outdoor furniture cushions plus the hot tap in there didn't work and the cold tap turned in its fitting, no doorbell connected to the property to alert fellow guests to your presence - the ring doorbell is connected to the property manager, parking is tight and the road outside the property is littered with potholes, the suggested additional parking at the pub at the end of the road has a 3hr limit. The nearest 24hr carpark is Oxford Grove and costs £6 a day, it is a half mile walk up a continuous steep incline. In summary save your money and stay elsewhere. I wouldn't use Sykes Cottages again because I can't trust their listing to be an accurate reflection of the property advertised.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear about the issues you encountered during your stay. I’d like to address your concerns directly. Firstly, I want to clarify that there is a car park next to the house, less than a 2-minute walk from the property, which provides additional parking options along the sea front what is 24 hours. Regarding the Ring doorbell, it is connected to the Alexa in the kitchen, which announces when someone rings the doorbell. For guest privacy, the Ring doorbell is not monitored during your stay, although I did respond when you first arrived and rang the doorbell. I regret to hear about the maintenance issues you experienced. The missing banister spindle will be looked into immediately. The shower drain was checked before your stay, but I will ensure it is thoroughly checked again. I wish you had contacted me during your stay so these issues could of been sorted immediately, my number is in the welcome message and welcome book. I and my team are on call 24/7. Thank you again for your review. Property Owner

  • "A couple of issues: 1) No Visitors Guide - nothing about working the heating, internet or emergency contacts 2) We worked out the heating once we found the hive/nest button under the bliler, but no timer/thermostat in the house 3) No access to internet until we finally found the router in the top play room with the boiler 4) The main walk in shower drain is blocked resulting in the tray almost overflowing - the kindly provided a plunger next to the shower, which resulted in black dirt and other "rubbish" coming back into the shower 5) The outer front door could not be securely locked and relied upon a Yale lock only but the door was very loose and poorly fitted 6) The inner front door dead lock would not lock from the outside, so this door could not be locked when going out - at least improving security a little."

We appreciate your candid feedback and apologise for the challenges you faced during your stay. Please note that the property is now under new management, and we are actively addressing the issues you've highlighted. Our team is working diligently to improve the visitor experience, ensuring comprehensive guides and resolving maintenance concerns. Thank you for bringing these matters to our attention, and we hope you consider staying with us again for an improved experience. Property Owner
