  • "The house was perfect for the 6 adults and 3 children in our party."

Good welcoming gifts compared to other properties we have stayed at. Great decking and hot tub. The only issues we had were connected to the garden and steep rough drive up to the car park. One of our 3 cars had difficulty on the first day which resulted in the car being parked in the main lane after excursions for the remainder of the holiday. The garden is fantastic but the dense undergrowth led to many lost balls (football and tennis). (The goal was at the other end of the garden than shown in the listing.) Our youngest child was 7 years old, but younger children would need careful monitoring due to the steep slope on the 2 tiered side of the garden.

The house is great with lots of space and very well appointed. We utilised all of the amenities there, hot tub, sauna, games room, bbq as well as getting out to the beautiful Woolacombe beach with the dogs! The welcome pack of Prosecco and cake was a thoughtful touch as well! We would definitely love to come back here for a longer stay!

  • "A beautiful big home in the valley."

Valley View really lives up to it's name. It's a very big beautiful home surrounded on all side by sweeping views of the valley The property photos are great and accurate, what you don't see though is just how big and quirky the home is. It has lots of amazing features and I loved all the different floor levels throughout the house I would love to have seen and air fryer in the kitchen but 7 burner twin oven range cooker really did do the job. You could of course cook outside on the bbq if you wanted to. The kitchen was FULLY stocked in terms of all other equipment. Lots of plates, cups cutlery Loads of pots, pans, serving dishes, large trays to cook with and way too many cooking utensils to mention. All this and the house even had children's dinner sets. This really is a big quality home and I use the word home because that's how it felt the moment we arrived,. The way this place is being cared for and maintained by the caretaker Kevin really does make this place luxury with a feeling of home. Kevin is always available to help with any questions about the house and the surrounding area. You may even be lucky enough to get hold of Kevin's wife's freshly laid hen eggs. Jackie really does supply the best eggs in town. I highly recommend this property.

If you want peace and quiet and being surrounded by breathtaking views and stunningly gorgeous nature this is the place to be. We are sad to leave and go home. Plenty of rooms in this 3 storey accommodation, lots of space and an added bonus of the detoxing infrared sauna and relaxing hot tub which is most welcomed after being out and about exploring the valley and fabulous places in Devon and Cornwall.

  • "Valley View is a beautiful house to stay in with stunning views and all the comforts of home."

It also has a hot tub and a sauna, the latter of which we didn't use but kept meaning to! The garden was perfect for my dogs, one of which is blind and she loved lying out in the sun on the grass in her own little world! I brought loads of stuff with me as I didn't know what would be left in the house but actually, the owners and managers had pretty much thought of everything. Lovely comfortable beds, very cosy lounge area, towels and bedding supplied and there were even some dog bowls there which I didn't use as I had everything with me. My poor car didn't need to have been as overloaded as it was in the end! Would thoroughly recommend Valley View - loads of nice pubs and eateries all within a 10-15 mins drive, gorgeous beaches and scenery - just a really fabulous place to be. The manager Kevin and his wife Jackie live very close by and offered assistance, a very warm welcome and a surprise little gift package when we arrived - it's those little touches that mean everything.

  • "We’ve just come back from a week away at Valley View with our three children and two dogs."

The house itself is amazing. Beautifully positioned with stunning views across the valley. Tastefully decorated throughout and very homely. The beds were extremely comfortable, the bed linen was on a par, if not better than some top hotels we’ve stayed in. The towels were thick and all colour coordinated each bathroom/bedroom. The kitchen was very well equipped and the washing machine and tumble dryer came in very handy after wet walks along the beach. There is plenty of seating inside and out for everyone and ample garden space. The fire pit and BBQ, whilst only used once due to weather, was great. We didn’t use the sauna, which is situated off the ground floor bedroom but made very good use of the hot tub, even in the rain! The hot tub is maintained by Kevin three times a week. There are plenty of DVD’s (although we didn’t watch any as took a Fire Stick with us), books and games at Valley View to keep everyone occupied. We absolutely loved being able to have fresh hen and duck eggs every day, which are collected and kept just outside the property and money can be left in an honesty tin along with extra logs and kindling if needed for the woodburner and fire pit. Parking was ample. We had two cars due to the amount of passengers/luggage and my Fiat 500 was not touched for the whole week, mainly due to passengers and comfort when going out, but also because it’s very steep and windy all around this area. Our family car is automatic and managed it very well but just be mindful if you have any mobility issues. Whilst the weather wasn’t on our side for most of the week, we still managed to get out and about and enjoy the sights. A trip to Ilfracombe Harbour and seeing ‘Verity’ is a must and taking a trip up to St Nicholas’ Chapel and seeing the history there. We went for dinner at Antidote in Ilfracombe one evening which is a Michelin restaurant and highly recommended but booking well in advance is essential. Woolacombe beach and Saunton Sands are sandy beaches which stretch three miles each and are breathtaking (would look even more stunning whilst the sun was shining I’d imagine) and it’s definitely a surfers paradise. The dogs thoroughly enjoyed these beaches and the sand dunes. Hele Mill for cream teas should definitely be on your list. The miller and his wife are very hospitable and the miller entertains all guests with puzzles and talking about the mill. The millers wife bakes all her own cakes and scones with the flour from this working mill. The history is amazing. Watermouth Castle was lovely, though rather eclectic, and remember to bring lots of loose change for all the old machines they have there. Outside the gardens are beautiful and the rides they have are mostly suited to younger children, probably under 10 I’d say. We would highly recommend staying at Valley View. Kevin and Jackie were very helpful, ensured we had everything we needed to make our stay the best it could be - so thank you so much for that. Jackie even let our youngest collect the hen and duck eggs, whilst Claire who has horses in the field next door, let our daughter pet them and talked to her about them (she now wants one!). Everyone was very friendly and we were quite sad to leave. We will hopefully return. Huge thanks to Kevin and Jackie for your hospitality, your hard work in making our stay a pleasant one was much appreciated.

Hi Vicki, thank you so much for your review and for sharing so many of your experiences of the house and surrounding area. It’s hugely appreciated. We are incredibly lucky to have Kevin and Jackie looking after the property and our guests for us, and to have them, Clare and others as such lovely neighbours! Delighted to hear that you had a lovely holiday, despite the mixed weather! We’d love to have you all back again and hopefully the sun will shine more for you next time! • "Whilst in a beautiful area and a lovely caretaker."

Paying over £4000 i would have thought it would have had a toilet and sink in the shower/sauna room downstairs. if this is not something you think is beneficial then a plan of layout of the rooms would be more beneficial on the Sykes website. I think personally if this was put in the description it would help people to choose as i would have personally have chosen a different property. There are 2 toilets/shower rooms on ground floor yes only one bedroom. top floor bedroom with en suite and twin single beds on top level looking over the stables but they have to go downstairs to use toilet/shower. then lower ground do have shower with no toilet or sink and has a louvre door to enter from bedroom which is not clearly stated in description. The rest of the property is perfect. and the caretaker is obviously nearby if any problems which we did have with the TV in the lounge area going blue in picture and this was replaced within hours with a brand new one which was perfect. Thank you.

Hi Harold, thank you for your feedback. It’s really appreciated. We thought the description was clear, but upon reviewing it we have been able to improve its clarity, so thank you for pointing this out. Thank you also for the suggestion to add en-suite facilities to the lower ground floor bedroom. We agree, it would be a wonderful addition, and will look into the possibility of doing this over the coming months. Best wishes, John and Alison. Update - We’ve now added full en-suite facilities to the lower ground floor bedroom, including replacing the door to the en-suite with a solid door. Thank you again for your suggestion. It’s a fantastic addition! We’ve also now added floorplans to the listing, so thank you again for that suggestion. Happy New Year to you and all your family. John and Alison Property Owner

  • "For a large party (ten people or so), Valley View has much to recommend it."

Its rural surroundings make it - thankfully - a tranquil retreat, while its lawn provides some welcome space for children to let off steam. The house is well equipped; clean, and - if required - has helpful stairgates and high chairs for young children. Very minor cavils would include not having en suite facilities (apart from a shower) for the bedroom on the lower floor and having an access road that could prove challenging, especially when manoeuvring in a crowded car parking area. On our visit, what also didn't help was the - presumably unavoidable - power cut which resulted, when power was restored at 4.38am, in the doorbell sounding and waking us up. However, as a place to retreat and relax and/or as a place to explore the local area (and there's lots to explore), this is an excellent holiday option.

Hi Bob, we’re delighted to hear you had a great holiday. Thank you for your feedback. It’s really appreciated. We're now working with our neighbour to repair the loose surface on the access road. We agree, an en-suite would be a fantastic addition to the lower ground floor bedroom. We'll look into the possibility of adding one. We’re really sorry to hear you were disturbed by the doorbell after a power cut. We’ll look into this as well and ensure it’s resolved. Best wishes, John and Alison. Update - we’ve now added full en-suite facilities to the lower ground floor bedroom. Thank you again for your suggestion. It’s a wonderful addition! Happy New Year to you and all your family. Our group ranged from young infant to senior citizens and there were no complaints. We were lucky to have great neighbor's in Kevin and Jackie who helped secure a small gap in the fence- they went the extra mile to make sure we were content to let the dogs out in the garden without fear of them escaping. Lovely people and I think were taking time to maintain the garden well. The veranda could use a parasol on the table for the really hot sunny days but other than that, it was a very successful visit. The furnishing and fixtures in the house were of a high standard and the kitchen was well equipped. We loved the outdoor sitting areas where we were able to enjoy the last of the sun. However, the outdoor furniture on the main deck is weather beaten and some of the chairs were a bit rickety. Some of the finial posts on the decking were also weathered and if someone fell into them they may break.

Hi Alison, we’re delighted to hear you had a great holiday. Thank you for your feedback. It’s really appreciated. The property is well stock with everything you would need and felt this was cleaned to a very high standard We had a problem with the hot tub when we first arrived and we were told this was being checked to make sure it was okay to use as the water was a bit murky, the company that cleans the hot tub advised that they had cleaned the filter and it had been crystal clear when they left and it was just from where they cleaned the filter and would clear within 24 hours and was okay to use. We did use the hot tub but we felt that the the company that cleans the hot tub should come out more than one a week to check everything is looking okay and still okay to use. The gardens were lovely but we were a bit dissapointed that there were a few areas that were over grown and you couldn't access like the fire pit area and the pond we had lovely weather but we were unable to sit in those areas. The stairs that lead to the garden also had overgrown weeds coming through. We noticed that the railings on the main deck area were not very safe and some of the spindles were broken we just felt these areas were a bit overlooked. That being said we were impressed with the accomodation itself and nothing was too much trouble if we had any problems.

The caretaker came round and I think completely by fluke got it working again but then the same thing happened when we went to use it later so we had 3 days where we couldn’t use it.. We messaged the caretaker about the issue happening again but our message wasn’t acknowledged. We were very disappointed and don’t feel we got everything we paid for. We have used Sykes several times and I always recommend them to friends. Have already booked a break for next year and am about to book a second , just hope if we encounter problems again they are resolved properly - we could book cheaper properties but always choose those with hot tubs even though you pay considerably more

Hi Sue, thank you for your feedback. It’s really appreciated. We’re really sorry to hear about the hot tub. A few trips soon gets you used to it anyway. The house was beautifully clean and had everything one could want for a quiet family holiday. There was only six of us in total including a four year old and a 15 month old, so there was ample room and facilities. The house, whilst on three levels, was perfectly safe for the children as there were stair gates on all the stairs and their safety was never a concern. The star of the show is definitely the hot tub, even on a not too sunny evening it's a great way to relax and enjoy a glass of something. Well situated for various North Devon resorts including Ifracombe, Combe Martin & Woolacombe, Woolacombe has a great beach and is well served with shops and restaurants. On a prctical point we had a delivery from Sainsburys on the evening of our arrival but you will have to carry the supplies upthe winding drive as no supermarket delivery van is going to attempt it; bu not really a problem.
