  • "Another fantastic week spent at the cottage, it is so well equipped and the kitchen equipment is brilliant there wasn't anything missing when cooking for 7 of us."

Very spacious for us and 4 springer spaniels. Love the addition of gate on bottom of stairs to stop dogs upstairs as our aren't allowed up stairs at home so took stress out of it. Cottage is like home from home but better. Washing machine and tumble dryer a brilliant bonus but maybe a new airer would be good as really struggled with the old one. Only thing that we would sat that would make it better for us is maybe a bench up on grass area when up there with little ones or dogs as beautiful in the sun up there and maybe some solar lights near steps as tricky when light outside goes off and you are at top of garden with dogs at bedtime with no light source, that was me lol. Fantastic place we didn't want to come home and will definitely come back.

Great outdoor space especially for the dogs. The only thing maybe worth thinking about is some sort of wall or fence around the edge of the wall where the seating area as a safety precaution if young children were staying. Would definitely stay at Samuel’s cottage again.

  • "Lovely cottage with an excellent, well equipped kitchen and lovely big living area (if you plan on using the pool table suggest bringing your own chalk!"

). Good location for visiting Looe, Polperro, Lanhydrock, Restormel Castle and the coast path. In April a review stated that there was only one parking space. I tried unsuccessfully to clarify the situation with Sykes so thought we would share what the parking situation was when we were there for future visitors. The cottage details say there is off road parking for 2 cars outside the garage opposite and one on road in front of the house. But we found another car was generally parked in the space to the side of the garage, meaning that there was really only one off road space in front of the garage. However, it was fairly easy to park 2 cars alongside the wall in front of the house. So yes, easy enough to park 3 cars, but not as described in the advert.

Our neighbours were really friendly and we were really struck at how welcoming and interested they were in us and our dogs given we were transient. We would defo go back

  • "After a good stay in one of your cottages last year we were slightly disappointed this time."

The welcome pack wasn’t good, no teabags or milk! We booked the cottage as it was pet friendly and we had two dogs including a support dog for our granddaughter. We thought the yellow “warning “ sign saying dogs are not allowed upstairs was uncalled for. A more thoughtful sign would be nicer. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean and the cottage is well equipped. Only one parking space though.

Thank you for providing your feedback which we have spoken to the owner of Samuels Cottage about. The owner confirms a welcome pack was left for you including coffee, milk and biscuits, he is apologetic if tea bags were not included. Whilst lots of properties are pet friendly, your guest booking conditions do state that pets are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture, unfortunately due to previous visitors to Samuels Cottage not following these rules, the owner felt it necessary to put a sign up as a reminder. guests. • "Samuel's Cottage is in a lovely village where the people are so friendly and the Community shop and Post Office has a good selection of products to buy."

The Cottage is well equipped (especially the Kitchen) the beds are so comfy & the on-suite shower is amazing. The roll top bath is large and very comfy for a long soak after a busy day. The location is good for discovering Cornwall and The garden is large and well fenced in so the Dogs are safe. There is a good selection of games provided and the snooker table was well used by us all. The only negative things to mention are the pebbles leading up the path are quite raised and are difficult for anyone with mobility issues. The heating is on a boiler which I could not understand how to switch it on/off and didn't know how to set the timer, it would be helpful for future guests if they had instructions on how to use it correctly. The booklet left with helpful advice is quite out of date and needs to be improved to include local shops & Farm Shops, activities and maybe a bus timetable. A list of dog friendly beaches would also help. Overall, we had an amazing time celebrating my Husband's surprise 70th Birthday and the cottage is ideal for a relaxed holiday. Highly recommended.

All the facilities you need, so very well stocked. We stayed as a group of 6 adults, ages from 46 years to 83 years. All had a fabulous comfortable stay. The garden was great for the huskies, with a lovely porch area for them to sleep. The older generation found the garden tricky to walk on, but as we visited during the winter this was not a problem as too cold for them. They took a stroll up to the village shop to grab the paper and were more than happy with that. If doing the same break we would definitely choose Samuel’s cottage again.

2 couples + 4 small dogs of various ages went to the cottage. Everything went well for us from stepping through the front door. The parking for 2 cars was no problem. The price pre bank holiday was reasonable. We spent our days out and back for tea time onward at the cottage. There is a lovely outdoor seating area to catch the eviening sun. There is a small enclosed grassed area for the dogs. There was everything we need at the cottage. There was a large smart tv in the lounge with extras which suited me because of my disabilities. Enough seating in the lounge and kitchen for 8. The lounge leather suites were a little worn but quite acceptable. Lovely cool kitchen and nice bedrooms. The en-suite had a lovely shower both over head and handset. We throughly enjoyed the cottage and facilities and would most certainly go back again( fianacescpermitting as I’m only on a basic gov pension) If I may make 1 suggestion, I’d change the bed pillows as they are not the most comfortable and are warm all the time. Nevertheless we go back in an instant.

  • "A lovely property, loads of character, was better than the online photos, is in a great quiet location, although listing states pub is walking distance but has closed down, yet only a 10 to 15min drive to Looe and other costal towns/walks etc."

Felt very homely and comfortable, spacious (would accomodate 8 easily), generally well equipped and clean and owner was very nice. Only small improvement suggestions, provide washing up sponge, tinfoil and clingfilm, some of the fittings need updating (toilet seats, towel holders, lamps etc), a little surface mould in the master bedroom should be cleaned/addressed. As we said these are only small improvements and overall we really enjoyed our stay, would have given 4.5 stars if we were able to, and we would recommend and stay at the cottage again.

Thank you for your feedback which we have discussed in detail with the owner. We can confirm that your 'small' suggestions have all been taken on board and actioned. The pub which is located behind the property (not advertised on our listing) is indeed closed for refurbishment and plans to open at the end of 2023, however The Tipsy Cow, which is less than 300m walk from Samuels Cottage is fully open. We are delighted to hear that you would recommend the cottage and look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Property Owner

  • "Very nice cottage that could easily be outstanding with a little attention."

We contacted David on our way to the cottage and he seemed very helpful and friendly. We had high hopes. We found the cottage lovely and inviting and we were looking forward to a cosy evening only to find the log burner was absolutely packed full of ash and obviously hadn’t been maintained. If that was how the grate looked then we had no confidence in how the flue had been maintained so gave it a wide berth. One of the lamps in the lounge had no bulb and the others all had to be plugged in in one corner due to a lack of sockets meaning we had to sit all evening with the bright main ceiling lamp on. Whilst wiping up a small spillage on the very first day in the kitchen the cloth came back up completely black. Do they mop the floors anywhere in the house?? We did not use the pool table but had seen that previous visitors had complained that balls were missing and the cue’s broken. This did still appear to be the case. Upstairs the bedrooms are roomy but after just getting into bed the bottom sheet removed itself every single night from the mattress which made a good night sleep impossible. This feedback has been shared by previous people for months and had been acknowledged by the owner but obviously then ignored. The cistern in the main bathroom was leaking so I had to fix that before it could be used and the en suite in the main bedroom obviously has a damp issue with the ceiling being in a poor state. The kitchen (apart from the floor) was clean and well equipped and did make it possible to cook a family meal on a couple of evenings which was nice. Plenty of plates and bowls with cutlery etc. The locals are lovely, always friendly and next door were quick to assist my elderly father when he got into trouble getting things out of his car. It is worth noting that renovation work is being carried out on the old pub next door currently and the scaffolding /workers overhang part of the rear garden which wasn’t ideal as we had to keep the dogs indoors when they were there. This is obviously out of control of the owner however. All in all it was a decent stay but could have easily been much better. If the owner addressed some of the long standing issues that have been repeatedly reported we would happily return. As it stands, we will probably recommend that you would have a more relaxing stay elsewhere.

We have discussed your review in detail with the property owner and can confirm that the flue for the open fire has been perfectly maintained and is useable without concern. It was unfortunate that the housekeeper overlooked the ashes on this occasion, although had you called the owner he would have been more than happy to have rectified this for you. All lamps have been checked and all have working bulbs, there are 3 lamps in total in the sitting area, each with their own socket, the owner is looking to move the wifi booster plug to free up a socket in case this is needed by future guests. A full change over is carried out between bookings and the comment regarding dirty floors is in stark contrast with previous cleanliness comments. The owner will be looking into purchasing wider sided sheets, although the current sheets are the correct size for the beds, the mattresses (due to their high quality) are wider than normal thus appearing to cause the issue mentioned. New billiard and snooker balls have been ordered. There is no damp in the en suite bathroom, due to an extremely busy peak season the property has suffered wear and tear and is currently undergoing some cosmetic work to touch up any paintwork maintenance. The owner takes his letting of Samuel's Cottage very seriously and prides himself on giving good holiday experiences – this is reflected in the feedback we have received and we have every confidence this will continue to be the case moving forward for all guests who visit. Also only real minor grip is about the pool table, not all the balls were there and the pool cues were not in good shape only one was remotely use able! Other than these minor issues we were very pleased with the accommodation.

Thank you for your feedback, having spoken with the owner of Samuels Cottage we can confirm the pub behind Samuels Cottage(which we do not advertise) is undergoing extensive refurbishment and plans to open towards the end of 2023. • "BUYER BEWARE - The description of the garden is factually incorrect."

Had we known the TRUE layout of the garden we would not have booked it. When you come out of the back door there are 2 steps up to a cobbled pathway which is about 20foot and slippy when wet. At the end of the cobbled path there are 11 steep steps to the grasses area. There is no accessible hand rail, just a wooden post and rope to the very right tucked under the trees. To the right of the cobbled path is a raised patio with seating. There is no railing around this raised patio and our dog fell off the highest point which is around 4foot. My poor dog was injured but a toddler falling from that height onto cobbles would he deadly.

Thank you very much for your comments following your stay at Samuels Cottage. We are sorry to hear that you found the description misleading, and that the outside area did not meet your expectations. Although we believe the garden area was accurately described we have taken your feedback on board and have expanded further on the details to assist future bookers. The patio area fully meets building regulations and is less than 4 foot high at his highest point, thus meaning a rail is not required to border that area. Having heard of the points raised the owner has since installed a rope handrail on one side of the steps which access the grassy area and the cobbled path is due to be re-grouted and re-pointed within the next few weeks(pictures to be added soon). The owner when l spoke to him was lovely very chatty friendly and offering help. The cake left for arrival was very sweet. Lanreath is a sweet village, with local community shop and bar. The chippy van visits on a Thursday -the teenagers enjoyed it!! The locals are very friendly and welcoming. However you do need a car to get about as buses don’t pass through. The bbq needs replacing (the body with no legs perched on a slab really doesn’t count as a bbq), the pool cues are broken, the kitchen cupboards whilst overloaded with glass ware and dining sets don’t fully close or doors are hanging slightly. The fridge also has tendency not to shut properly. The en-suite shower basin floods. There is no hair dryer. Nothing l note is major we had a great holiday and the cottage met our needs.

The cottage was immaculate and extremely well equipped for our party of 4 adults and 3 dogs. Upstairs is particularly comfortable and the beds were excellent for providing a good night's sleep. David was generous enough to leave us a cake in the kitchen to enjoy for lunch and was extremely helpful in the days leading up to our holiday. Looe is such a beautiful place and only 6 odd miles from Lanreath, with great pubs and restaurants. We really loved the quality of the beer/food, atmosphere and service at the Olde Salutation Inn and the Old Sail Loft Restaurant.' The place had a real friendly feel about it and the view of the small boats at high tide from the bridge separating East and West Looe was stunning. Polperro was a little "twee" for the dogs but a lovely place all the same. If you don't mind climbing down (and back up) to a wonderful beach then Lantic Bay gives you the very best that Cornwall has to offer, with a beautiful beach and crystal clear waters. Our favourite spot to take the dogs for a run on the beach was at 'Whitsands Bay' to the East of Looe, with it's 4 miles of wide and spacious sandy beach (though a short climb down from Tregantle is required). Pelynt was handy and just 2 miles from the cottage and had good pubs/social clubs and a couple of supermarkets. The very generous Sunday roast at the Jubilee Inn was too much for me but lovely. Staff near enough everywhere were extremely friendly (if I ignore the barman at Smugglers' Inn in Seaton!! If you like the idea of travelling slightly further afield then Charlestown is a lovely spot with a great harbour, shingle beach, picturesque cottages and a good selection of cosy drinking establishments. It also featured in the recent BBC series 'Poldark'. A perfect break for us and the dogs and a certainty for another visit in the not too distant future. There was plenty of room for the whole family. The garden was a good size and great for our dog. The community village shop was extremely handy, stocking most things.

  • "There were seven adults and we all thought it was great."

It is well equipped and there is plenty of room. It is located in a pretty friendly village. The local shop is very handy too! Although the only pub is closed and for sale there is a social club which is cheap and again very friendly a short walk away. It is central for a lot of places to see and only 3 odd miles to the beach. But I would recommend that you have transport! We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

In Lanreath, a fine, Grade II listed, south-facing cottage over two levels, mentioned in the Domesday Book, flanked by equally ancient cottages.

Step through the front door into a big hall with a wood-burning stove in its inglenook fireplace, slate floor, leather window seat and pool table; walk through glazed doors into the large living room with polished wood floor and leather sofas, then through to the fitted oak kitchen with dining table and chairs, slate floor and utility room with toilet.

Head upstairs to four bedrooms: two king-size doubles, one with en suite shower-room, a twin, and a single with additional z-bed; family bathroom.

In front, there is a neat walled garden; at the back, a large, mostly lawned garden on two levels with patio (table/chairs, barbecue) which can be lit at night for romantic dining (from the back door there are 2 steps up to cobbles, then 2 further steps up to first tier of lawn and patio, and 11 slate steps up to further lawn - rope hand rail).

A wonderful, well-equipped cottage in every respect with lots to see in the area including nearby popular fishing villages of Looe and Polperro.

About the location

LANREATH

Pelynt 2 miles; Looe 5 miles; Polperro 6 miles.

Lanreath is a village in southeast Cornwall, five miles west of Looe. Lanreath is rural in character with a local shop and Post Office as well as a parish church. There are a number of ghost stories associated with Lanreath. The best-known features a ghost in black driving a coach pulled by a headless horse. Nearby Pelynt is home to a parish church, a number of local shops and pubs, especially the Jubilee Inn, which was an original farmhouse dating back to the 16th Century. Looe is Cornwall’s second largest fishing port and hence there is always a lively maritime bustle around the quay area of East Looe, which is connected to the quieter West Looe by a seven arched 19th century bridge over the River Looe. The sandy Looe beach adjoins the pier and is very popular with families because of its safe shallow swimming and vast expanse of sand. Polperro is a little further away and is a historic fishing village nestling at the head of a long valley leading down to the sea. With plenty of areas to visit, Lanreath is a quiet, pleasant place offering easy access to the coast, the moors, National Trust properties and Cornwall's famous gardens.
