  • "We had a wonderful stay at 6 Burgh Island causeway, the views were 100%, beds comfy and the WiFi was good."

    Thank you very much.

  • "We found No 6, as last year, home from home- relaxing and comfortable with everything one needs to enjoy a lovely holiday including being allowed to bring our dog."

The shower room door certainly needs some attention as it catches on the floor every time one opens and closes it. Unlike other holiday cottages that we have stayed in in the past No 6 has plenty of china, cutlery, and glasses which makes the use of the dish washer less frequent and life more relaxed. The only downside of our holiday was that we failed to book No 6 for two weeks initially. We look forward to coming again

  • "We had a lovely stay with our 2 dogs."

Perfect location above the causeway. Suntrap terrace perfect for watching people & dogs enjoying the beach & sea. The apartment was well equipped (home from home). Unfortunately the lift was restricted to luggage only, whilst we were there meaning 4 flights of stairs to get back to the car park. Fortunately, we were able to access beach by going through club terrace on to the slip road (only 2 stairs) so it didn't detract from our enjoyment. Although the apartment is advertised as ground level the complex is set into a cliff, and the apartment is on the lowest level so I wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility issues. Thoughtfully the owner phoned during our stay to check everything was ok. We liked it so much we hope to go again next year.

  • "Apartment location with the views was fabulous."

Very well equipped. Appreciate that there is not much time to do deep clean after each booking, however we found dust/dirt around beds, underneath furniture and remnants of previous stays food in the cupboards. Cream sofa looked like it required a clean, as did the runner mat in the main bedroom. Not complaining, just saying it could do with a thorough clean in-between stays. Would stay again, but not through Sykes. Found it difficult to get basic information prior to the holiday and access to messages. Paid for parking on council car park only to find that 2 cars could be parked in the allocated parking space. Had enquired about this prior to the stay and no mention that 2 cars could park. Also requested in advance for double bed to be made into 2 singles. This was not done.

  • "Having been to these apartments for many years, we were disappointed at the appearance of the doors into the building."

We were also concerned that those doors were actually broken and insecure. The beds were very comfortable and sizeable. The kitchen was excellently stocked. We’ve never stayed in a ground floor flat and we absolutely loved it - the terrace was brilliant and so close to the beach - our little dog loved it too!! We had a wonderful week - we’d like to come back next year and stay for a fortnight assuming the price stays manageable.

  • "Very comfortable, well equipped apartment with lovely views."

Be aware if your mobility is limited that there are 11 steps down from the carpark to the building before you get to a lift to take you 2 floors down to ground floor level. Also we thought the balcony picture with the little gate in next to the cafe seating was this apartment but it wasn’t, so less helpful for dog walking access. Fantastic location for beach goers, and pretty scenery round and about. Owner very helpful. A good find.

The apartment itself is really lovely. Decorated so beautifully and stocked with everything you could possibly need, whilst also being comfortable and homely. The location is amazing and the views, all day and all weather are just perfect!!! Couldn't imagine a more relaxing break with our dog and right next to the best dog friendly beach for her. Thank you to the host for being so helpful during our stay

Well equipped and great we could bring the dog. Club area good with lovely food - shame you can’t bring dogs in but we took food back to the apartment to eat. Great to have pool and gym. So close to beach and beautiful walks right on your doorstep. We have been coming to the apartments for almost 15 years on and off - everything we need for a relaxing break.

  • "Had a great 14 day holiday at this wonderful beachside apartment."

This was certainly helped by full sunshine in the 20’s for most of each day up and some days up to 9 o’clock in the evening. Could not have picked a better time weather wise to be their and sat in the patio overlooking the beach every day. Apartment was well presented on arrival on 1st July 2022 with all amenities you need for a short stay. Wonderful views from the patio looking over towards Burgh Island and even though we have been to the complex before it is still fascinating watching the tide coming in on two sides and meeting if tide high enough The beach itself is sandy and a haven for dog owners and our Yorkie was in his element when on the beach, he did on a couple of occasions take it upon himself to climb up onto the rocks just in front of the apartment but was not in danger and luckily could not escape. Only downside was that the owner of the apartment above allowed his family believed to be grandsons and friends totalling 7 male teenagers to stay a few days after we arrived that resulted in a couple of nights lack of sleep as they were shouting/arguing that appeared to be alcohol related throughout the night. For whatever reason they seemed to have to drag chairs across the tiled flooring until around 4 am. We spoke to the gentleman who ran the restaurant and Spa/Swimming pool who had also had issues with a couple of them and he had asked them to leave the Swimming Pool due to lack of respect. The night after it all went quiet!!!!!!!!! and thankfully stayed that way. Whilst this was annoying it would not prevent us from returning as could not fault anything with the apartment or facilities and their behaviour was certainly not the fault of the owner of the apartment. Visited the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth as this was just over an hours drive each way as we were unable to do so when last at the Causeway in 2020 as the Sanctuary was closed due to COVID restrictions and this was a lovely day trip. Generally had a great time, it went to quick and can’t wait to return next year.

Balcony very overlooked so didn’t make as much use of it as I expected to. Apartment very well equipped. Beds extremely comfortable with quality linen. Milk, tea, coffee and biscuits an unexpected pleasure. Plenty of hot water and pressure excellent. Cleanliness not perfect. Areas missed in bathrooms, remote controls. Light pulls in the bathrooms not the most hygienic, in covid times. Power cut on Sunday meant the broadband needed resetting - booklet easily found and after a couple of attempts was achieved. Washing machine instruction booklet missing? Overall a lovely stay. Thank you

  • "Love coming back to Burgh Island each year."

The flat is very comfortable. Sybil is very welcoming. I think personally it could do with an update as it is very expensive now and other flats have been refurbished. Balanced against that is the acceptance of dogs and that feels unfussy and welcoming. I would like to make a general point about the flats which I think should be raised with the committee, my brother has a severely disabled daughter and there are no ramps in the outside areas. He has to heave her heavy wheelchair up all the steps to access the swimming pool, the outside, the flats themselves and the dining area. We come every year and he has been doing this for 11 years. There are many people with disabilities and I think this is an equal rights issue. Could you let me know if this has been passed on.

  • "We have stayed in various apartments within the complex."

No 6 had its excellent points and some disappointing ones for our visit. It was disappointing due to its lack of cleanliness. The kitchen counters were not clean and the floor, despite having been damp when we went in was dirty. Our feet became brown. I had to clean the table, work surfaces and floor. The edges around the carpet have not been cleaned for a good while with lots of dust accumulated. I could not find the attachments for the hoover to do it. I spoke to the owner of the property about the cleanliness and she was apologetic and said she would speak with the cleaners. A modern mop would help visitors to clean after themselves or their dogs more effectively. Having said that, the kitchen was very well equipped with high-quality kitchen equipment. The oven and hob were very clean and properly equipped. Plenty of quality glasses and plates are available. The wifi is fast and you can stream movies to multiply devices easily. The TV is a smart TV so it's easy to access whatever accounts you have. The owner also provides access to NetFlix. The verandah is lovely to sit out on and enjoy the wonderful views. The padded seat covers could do with a clean. I washed some of them. The beds and bedding were clean and very comfortable. The double bed is 6ft wide. The towels were high quality and the hot water plentiful. We had a few cold days and the underfloor heating was very effective at keeping the chill off. A rug or two on the floor might give a more homely feel to the room and some mats at the doors (there were none) might help to keep some of the sand and dirt out.

Burgh Island View Apartments

Just 20 yards from Bigbury-on-Sea's big and splendid sandy beach, looking to Burgh Island Causeway, are 29 stunning, high quality apartments, of which we let a number. Within the same building are excellent leisure facilities and a restaurant. The views over the sea to the south and west, and at low tide of a vast expanse of smooth washed yellow sand reaching to Burgh Island, are outstanding. The island's jolly pub, The Pilchard, is fun to visit (long-legged sea tractor at high tide). All the apartments, which are privately owned and individually furnished, have those sensational views, and are wonderfully light, with large, airy open-plan living/dining/kitchens and glazed doors to balconies or terraces. The smallish bedrooms, at the back (without views), have good quality en suite bath or shower-rooms. The apartment building is three-storey. Most apartments have easy access (short walk from parking and between 5 and 9 steps down to the lift). The ground floor (still high above the beach) apartments have big terraces, the first and top floor apartments have very good-sized balconies. The leisure facilities, which are free for guests to use and open from 10am every day (except Christmas Day), include a fine indoor swimming pool (40' x 20' x 4'6"), spa pool, well-equipped gym (treadmill, steps, cycles, Concept II Rower and other instruments of torture) and sauna (no children under 14 in gym or sauna). There are changing rooms, a shower and disabled loo. The Club restaurant/smart bar, is open 10am to 9pm during the High Season, reservations recommended (for all other times of the year, please contact the Leisure Centre for opening times), serves excellent food throughout the day, with a popular dinner menu which varies daily and themed evenings. You can also order meals to take to your apartment. The comfy lounging area has sofas and WiFi, and the sunny outdoor terrace faces the sea.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

Where you’ll be staying

BIGBURY-ON-SEA

Modbury 6 miles; Plymouth 12 miles.

Bigbury-on-Sea is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, the beach offers safe fun for groups particularly if you’ve got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury-on-Sea beach is dotted with rock pools, so there’s plenty of entertainment for budding marine biologists. There’s also a wide and varied selection of watersports available to visitors who prefer their holidays to feature a little adrenaline rush. Windsurfing and kite-surfing are popular here, with hire facilities located right on the beach. To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury-on-Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room. You can even take the dog onto the beach, although they are restricted to certain areas during the summer. Bigbury’s most famous landmark is Burgh Island, which overlooks the beach itself. The island is accessible at low tide, when the waters reveal a causeway that links it to the beach. However, when the tide is in you can still reach the island by hitching a ride on the popular and unique ‘sea tractor’. Burgh Island boasts an award-winning hotel, elegant and rather genteel, it’s an ideal romantic retreat for couples. Explore the South Devon coast with its fabulous sandy beaches and its breathtakingly beautiful coastal path or simply take time to visit some of the charming estuary towns and villages dotted throughout the area, such as Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. The city of Plymouth and the wild open spaces of Dartmoor are also both close at hand.
