Very quaint and cozy home from home. Loved the working Rayburn in the kitchen. Gave off a welcome warmth all the time. I would recommend staying here. Thanks for having us.

Spacious and clean Brilliant for families and dogs, great location on the Devon / Cornwall boarder - loads to do close by, enclosed garden, and extremely handy pub a one minute stroll / we ate there three times - freshly cooked, so be prepared to wait - it’s not fast food - its delish! Despite this, very quiet on an evening. Off road parking for two cars. Two fridges, to store the essentials- Sainsbury’s deliver here too. Co-op 10 min drive, many walks on door step too.

Thank you taking time to write a review. One of the sofas was replaced less than 4 years ago, the other sofa had a new loose cover made last spring as did 1 of the armchairs in the lounge and the 1 in the kitchen. As they have loose covers they are regularly removed and washed as are the throws. All 10 cushions in the lounge were replaced in spring this year. Due to the amount of rain this year, along with the sun we have asked the gardener, who comes once a week to mow the lawn, to also cut back any flowers and shrubs that have grown a bit too vigorously. • "We had a great girls week at Chapel Cottage."

The cottage is a longer walk from the beach than we had imagined, and the road down is very narrow, but a great location, next to the Old Smithy Inn, a few hundred yards away. We went for a meal there on our first night there, but unfortunately, we think they forgot our order, and we waited 1hr 15min for the food to come, but it was delicious when it came. We went back on the Thursday evening for their Folk Night, which was wonderful, and great end to our weeks holiday. Unfortunately, the rusty pub sign was right outside my bedroom window, and made the most incredible squeaking noise when the wind blew, so some nights I really struggled to get off to sleep. The cottage is very well equipped, with plenty of saucepans, cutlery & crockery etc. Dish washer tablets, dish clothes, oven gloves & 1 tea towel were provided, and there was nothing we needed that wasn't there. Beds were very comfortable, and lovely bedding, though apparently the front double bed was very creaky when you turned over! LOL Plenty of books, games, DVD's etc to borrow, with the front room being very cosy on a VERY cold June night!!! The only disappointment, was with the small garden, the grass was overgrow, and badly needed mowing, and the flower borders were very overgrown, all be it with lovely shrubs etc. The cast iron chairs & cushions have seen better days too. We visited Morwenstow, where is the most delightful Tea Rooms at The Old Rectory. Bude was another great find, and had amazing fish & chips at Life's a Beach, on Summerleaze Beach, and browsed the shops in the town. Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven & Clovelly are also well worth a visit. We had 2 amazing meals at The New Inn in Kilkhampton, which is the closest village to the cottage, the Sunday lunch is to die for, and so reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone,& would be happy to make a return visit, but would hope that the garden had been sorted and the pub sign tied up to stop it being so annoying!

Thank you for your review, we are glad you and your friends enjoyed your stay and thank you for leaving such a lovely review in the cottage. However as you have now mentioned a couple of things that would have made your stay even more enjoyable. The pub sign has now been greased and is now silent again! The squeaky bed was only 2 weeks old, we have now tightened all of the joints, thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. We are keen gardeners and have filled the garden with year round interest, in 20 years we have never had comments regarding the garden, unfortunately this year the combination of sun and rain has made the flowers and shrubs even more abundant than usual! We have asked the gardener, who comes once a week to cut the lawn, to also cut back any flowers and shrubs even if they are in flower if they are encroaching the lawn. The hedges were cut back the week after your departure as we don't like to do this until after the birds have fledged. The garden furniture set was replaced last year as was the wooden bench. Many thanks again for your kind comments. Property Owner

  • "Overall, lovely cottage."

The cottage was very quaint and very well-equipped. It was very charming. Great locations next to a good pub/restaurant and some nice if not steep walks to the sea within easy reach. There were only two of us on our stay so had flexibility on what bedrooms to use in a four-bedroom cottage. Our first night was spent in the larger bedroom, however, we both found the mattress fairly poor so switched to a smaller bedroom with a better mattress. Not an issue for us (as used the main bathroom), but worth pointing out that the shower screen in the ensuite was stuck so could not use the shower.

We had a fantastic family Christmas and there was plenty of space for us all to relax without getting on top of each other. Extremely well equipped kitchen and the decor in the cottage was tasteful and beautiful. The large utility room was a godsend for storage and for boots and coats. The new owners at the pub are extremely friendly and we had a lovely meal there on Christmas Eve. Thank you very much for the Christmas trees and decorations and also the goodies which were kindly left for us (even a tin of doggie treats). Cannot fault this cottage in any way and would thoroughly recommend it.

The garden is small as described, but perfect for our dog to stretch her legs when we weren’t out exploring the countryside/ coastline together. My only recommendation for the kitchen would be a big lidded dish for casserole/stew for the size of the party (sleeps 8), or a slow cooker - autumn/winter comfort food, easy to prepare and leave to cook, whilst you are out. The house was clean and fresh and a lovely cream tea awaited us on arrival. Thank you, we will be back!

  • "Lovely spacious cottage."

5 Adults shared this and we had entry of space. Rural as expected. Didn't expect it to be so close to the pub that every morning between 5.30 and 6 you were woken by the comings and goings of the bin men and trades people. The garden is very very small the picture taken with a wide angle lens is very misleading. Cottage far to hot with Rayburn on all the time made it unpleasant at night even with all the windows open. Thank goodness it wasn't the height of summer! Lack of cleaning products and minimal larder bits, oil, herbs etc doesn't help when you have a 20 minute drive to a supermarket. Check in not till 5pm is rather late don't blame it on Covid 3pm would have been much better. All round they could have done better.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback, we take this very seriously. We are close to a good pub and receive many positive comments about this in our guest book. The collection that you refer to usually takes place once a week. We have spoken to the landlord, and he tells us that he is changing the rubbish collection company and so this issue is being addressed. As the property is a converted chapel, there is not a lot of land. We do state that the garden is small in the property description and most of our guests are very happy with it. We're very pleased with our housekeeper, who ensures that there are supplies of anti-bacterial products, wipes, cloths, dishwasher tablets etc. We also leave salt, pepper, tea, coffee, sugar etc as well as a welcome cream tea. The Rayburn is left on the lowest setting and heats the towel rails, all other radiators have been individually switched off for the summer. For the moment, the check-in time must remain at 5pm as we really do need the extra time to deep clean the property. We're pleased to hear that you had plenty of space and hope that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

As two families staying, the second double bedroom was tiny which is fine as it’s a lovely cottage. But the mattress on a normal size double needs to be really firm (I could feel the springs) if it’s only a double these days... my only constructive feedback. Otherwise a perfect stay. The Cottage was really well equipped and had all we needed, lots of useful info about the surrounding areas and things to do. The garden was a little disappointing. The toilet seat in one bathroom was broken and we had hoped a replacement was going to me made as the lady did mention having to source a new one but alas it never arrived, was a bit trickier with only one fully useable toilet between 6. We were surprised at the comings and goings from the pub which did make for some disturbed nights with traffic and footfall right beneath the bedroom window, we ended up having to close the windows which did make the bedroom quite warm and stuffy so perhaps access to some fans might with help with this issue..... just a thought. There was also an issue with maggots in one of the bins which my husband dealt with, we guessed maybe the previous tennants had failed to bag the refuse properly and put the bins out for collection, there was a massive amount of flies around generally. These issue are by no means complaints just constructive feedback, we had a lovely week in a lovely cottage. Unfortunately there was a couple of breakages, 2 glasses and 2 bowls, I sent a text to the contact person informing of this. Best wishes Rachel and Alan Done

The rooms were more than big enough for the four of us and the secure garden to the rear was an added bonus. The location was fantastic and we explored the area following some of the suggested walks recommended by previous guests. The walk down to Welcombe Mouth beach was roughly two miles down some seriously undulating country lanes but the views when you get there made it all worth while. The cottage was fairly close to the A39 making it easy to explore the surrounding area of Devon and Cornwall. Finally, the Old Smithy pub was a real gem and being literally next door meant we enjoyed a number of superb meals there whilst sat in the beer garden.
