  • "Fabulous cottage plenty of space for us all."

Perhaps a TV upstairs would be good for the kids. Beds were a bit too hard but that’s the only thing we’d change. But, could be perfect for other visitors. Definitely recommend but only for those able bodied due to the hills etc. great place to stay in a beautiful location!

  • "Absolutely beautiful, clean house."

However we wouldn't return because parking is an absolute nightmare!!!!! Alarm bells started as soon as we got there, one of the neighbours told us he was using his car to save the space for someone who was arriving the next day. We had to drive around for ages hoping someone would pull out of a gap, so we could park. Also the beds weren't very comfortable. For the size of the rooms they could easily fit a king size bed. My partner is 6ft 6 and really struggled to sleep all week. On a positive the house it's self was lovely and had everything you need for a family home.

Thank you for your feedback. Parking can be tricky and advice on where to park is given in the welcome email. Sorry your husband had trouble sleeping, we will look into the size of the bed in the front bedroom when we replace them. Property Owner

Owner sent out a lovely email prior to arriving with additional details which was informative. House nice and cosy. Kitchen was well equipped with crockery/cutlery etc. Beds comfy and bedroom tidy. House nicely placed. Town of Foretuneswell a little too quiet for our family but plenty of things to do in Portland with lots to explore and see around the area

It's very pleasant and clean and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The neighbours are friendly and helpful. There are local shops and pubs very near by. It is on a hill side, so nice views and pretty sun sets. There is a passage with steps and a steep foot path leading to the sea front, or a passage and gently sloping path on the right as you leave the property. Parking can be an issue.

  • "Lovely cottage for adults and older children, tastefully decorated with everything you need and the owner really went out of her way to resolve a problem we had."

However, despite the stair gates (ground floor and second, not on the first floor where the family room is) and providing a cot and high chair, we felt that it wasn’t really suitable for small children and had to be constantly on alert with our crawler and preschooler. The lower, open tread, stairs and the upper narrow winding stairs were a challenge, unsecured shelving and mirrors, and just the amount of furniture squeezed in made it tricky. Sadly the outside was a complete no go from a safety point of view (different levels no barriers) which meant we had to keep the back door shut, such a shame as it would have been so nice to spend time out there. All in all I’d highly recommend the cottage for adults and older children but for those with preschoolers I’d say wait a few years and then have a lovely stay there.

Communication with the owner was easy & always helpful. The location was perfect - close to Chesil Beach, Co-op a very short walk up the road, superb fish & chip shop down the hill, a small grassy park nearby, excellent local bus service. Touches like the hose outside, throws for settees, stair gate meant that we were able to feel relaxed in the house with our very enthusiastic & frequently muddy/sodden/salty/seaweedy springer spaniel. Beds & showers blissful and we loved the wood burning stove....especially on rainy days.

  • "We (1 child, 3 adults) very much enjoyed our stay in this lovely home."

The rooms were cosy, bright and homely (with many pillows and soft blankets). Our daughter loved the many Walliams books, the games' trunk and the fancy dressing table in her room. It was nice to relax on the patio. At the time of our stay, it was really quiet in the neighbourhood, which was very pleasant. Short walk to the pebble beach or to the start of the breathtaking walk around the island. Some minor comments: downstairs ceiling might be too low for very tall (+6ft) people. The parking space might prove an issue in the really busy period. Some minor issues in the kitchen will be resolved by the lovely host. Nothing that would hold us from recommending this lovely holiday home. We would have liked to stay an extra week. Comment to agency: it's a pity the cancelation assurance is only for UK residents, as this leaves foreign visitors financially unprotected in these covid times.

We came as a family of 6 adults and one toddler and there was plenty of space for all of us. The cottage had everything we needed to in the Kitchen. All rooms were very clean and stocked up with your basic amenities to start with. Perfect location if you want to visit the beach and close by attractions. Supermarkets are within few minutes’ drive and there are options to choose as well (Co-op, Tesco, Lidl, Asda etc). Our favourite was the garden and balcony area which my two-year-old thoroughly enjoyed during morning and evening time. E-mails were responded to and actioned immediately which we were very happy with, thanks to Eleanor. We would highly recommend this cottage to other family members and friend if they are planning to visit this beautiful Isle of Portland.

  • "The house is in a nice location (apart from parking but we knew that) with lots of lovely costal walks and has everything you need."

Negatives - the house wasn’t as clean as we would have expected, dirty oven, had to unload the dishwasher on arrival and clear up dog mess from the patio. The upstairs decking also needs a good clean if your planning on using it. The neighbours at 16 park in front of the house so close to the entrance getting in and out with the babies pushchair was a daily challenge, guests are discouraged from parking to be respectful to residents but this doesn’t seem to work both ways. No dishwasher salt or rinse aid so nothing was cleaned meaning we washed by hand but only one tea towel provided.

Glad you enjoyed the location. I’m sorry to hear certain aspects didn’t meet your expectations. We have taken on board your comments about the outside area. We only supply a small amount of disposable kitchen/bathroom supplies initially but being self catering there is an expectation that guests provide some too. Property Owner

It is a shame that you’re unable to park a vehicle at this property, but we knew this before we booked and nearby parking wasn’t difficult. One major concern is that there were no keys for the windows, which in the bedrooms are at floor level and open with a considerable drop. We had to string the handles together as our 1 year old found out how to open them almost upon arrival. Surprised that they don’t have opening limiters? Other than that we had a wonderful time and hold to return.

Many thanks for your feedback regarding the windows. We are now fitting window opening limiters to the large windows in the bedrooms. Glad you had a nice holiday and look forward to welcoming you again. Property Owner

Queens Street is best for parking, you can access the terrace/house through an alley from Queens Street. The town is very hilly with steep roads and alleys down to the beach, as such you will experience the most amazing sunsets and sea views from the house. We found the location perfect for visiting all of Portland (on foot as well as in the car) and heading out for day trips to Lyme Regis, Poole, Brownsea Island and Lulworth Cove/Durdle door.

In holiday accommodation you do not expect this, no comfort and not a “home from home” experience. • Inconsiderate neighbours who park across front entrance also not pleasant (no 16). It was just what we needed to get away from the COVID and US election dramas. Plenty to do on Portland despite the UK going into second lockdown whilst we were there. We enjoyed the pubs and cafes whilst they were open and after lockdown, plenty of take-aways and nearby shops. We also: went walking and running, fished on the beach and took in the sights of Portland and Weymouth. The people on Portland are very friendly. Although there is no parking outside the cottage, there is plenty of parking on Queen Street which is accessible through an alleyway and less than five minutes walk to the car so people shouldn’t be put off by that. Sykes were really good at keeping their website up to date with the lockdown info and the owner of the cottage also emailed us before we arrived so we had her contact details. The cottage has everything you could possibly need and more! Really well equipped, washing machine and dishwasher were a real bonus! The owner contacted us before our stay and couldn't be any more helpful, with info about the island, places to go and even has family passes to places that we could use. Nothing was too much trouble at all and she replied so fast with any queries. The cottage was spotlessly clean with freshly laundered made up beds and towels, beautiful garden terraces with lovely furniture and wonderful sea views. Spacious bedrooms and beautiful bathroom. The neighbours were very friendly and offered some tips on where to watch the sunset. As in the description you cannot park outside the cottage but you can stop at the top of the terrace to unload and usually find parking on Queens Road. • "Lovely little place to stay with excellent facilities and well placed to enjoy the area."

Local neighbours were very pleasant. Only downsides were: it is a very tiny terrace so noise from neighbours socialising outside in the evenings did carry considerably to bedrooms. Just the one toilet for a property sleeping 8 does inevitably create difficulty on occasion although it is as listed, we just did not notice there was no mention of a second cloakroom until after we had booked! Also lack of parking outside, again this was listed so we were aware but it definitely makes unloading and loading all holiday luggage more stressful. However the difficulties were cancelled out to a degree because it is such a pleasant property to inhabit and the owners had provided every comfort. The outside terraces made it and, as we were blessed with excellent weather, we only ate one meal inside.

Facilities on the cottage were great. But I do think Sykes needs to stress that parking is impossible outside the property. Parking in Queen’s Road was doable, but not for people with limited mobility as the hill was quite steep back to the cottage. Also, the steps to the beach are not for those with limited mobility either. This does need to be mentioned in the description. We were fine with it , as we’re the grandchildren, but it could be problematic for some. Otherwise, everything was great and would recommend.
