  • "Another pleasant visit to Yeoman Cottage with lots to do in the area, helped by the extensive leaflets and booklets on site."

We didn't visit the pub down the road this time as we'd found Cat Head at Chiselborough to be excellent before and were again this time. They are closed Mon & Tues but do an excellent Sunday roast which is popular so booking is advised. We may return next year if the cottage remains available.

Thank you Alison for your kind comments. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your recent visit. Many apologies about the kettle, as I should have acted promptly. However I have managed to find a small screw to secure the lid. I will be delighted to welcome you again next year, all being well. Kindest regards from Marie Wheatley. Property Owner

On arriving at this property the smell of damp was overwhelming to say the least it was so bad I was heaving we were late getting there so had to stay the night but walked out the following morning the Owner Mrs Wheatley was very rude and it took us several attempts to contact her 24hrs before ,when my husband told her why we were leaving she just replied 'you should have stayed at home then" the shower which was mentioned on the website but there is usable and useless and this was the latter, please take property off your website it is not fair for anyone to experience what we did really spoilt our holiday and on returning home had to throw items away because of the pungent smell

The cottage has a damp old smell as is in need of a really deep clean. The bathroom hadn’t been cleaned at all when we arrived and the hand shower attached to the tap is next to useless. Pictures of the cottage are way out of date. Unfortunately we won’t be recommending this property to anyone, really needs some TLC.

  • "The cottage was well presented, nice and clean and very quiet which we greatly appreciated."

I thought that the bathroom let the facilities down a little. The hot water was not always available and certainly not enough to fill a bathtub. There wasn't a shower set up either so it was quite a cumbersome arrangement as far as bathing was concerned. It would be difficult for anyone physically challenged. The WiFi was also frustrating as it continually dropped out and the device needed to be reconnected. When overseas such as we are, we are very dependent on the WiFi working properly to keep our mobile roaming costs down. I think it would be a great place to stay if these relative minor issues could be addressed. Colin (Australia)

  • "The cottage was perfect for us."

It was in a great location for walks on public footpaths from the property. It is on the Somerset Cycle Way which is on quiet roads and meant I could cycle (fairly) safely without too much traffic. We also visited the 4 National Trust properties close by and Sherborne. There are many pubs nearby which do food. Yeoman's cottage has a patio facing east which was good for sitting out at breakfast time. There is a very large garden which we could walk around and admire all the birds. The only negative thing was the shower over the bath where there was insufficient height to stand up.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your visit. You certainly seem to have made the most of the varied attractions of this area. I am sorry about the shower, but it does say in Sykes’s notes about the cottage that there is limited headroom above the bath. You obviously hadn’t noticed that. I have taken advice about removing the bath in favour of a shower cubicle but the sloping roof would still be a problem. Property Owner

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Yeoman Cottage."

The cottage is cosy, comfortable and homely and so lovely to return to after a long day out. Yeoman Cottage is ideally situated for numerous National Trust properties – Lytes Cary Manor, Tintinhull Gardens, Barrington Court and Montacute House are all within in very easy reach. We also ventured further afield (only approximately 25-30 miles) to Stourhead and Hardy’s Cottage. Yeoman Cottage is quiet and peaceful, and we felt well-rested after our stay – an ideal location to ‘get away from it all’! Thank you, Marie!

Thank you very much for your feedback. Your kind words are very much appreciated and I am delighted that you enjoyed your visit so much. I very much enjoyed meeting you and thank you for being such agreeable guests. Property Owner

It's extremely comfortable and very pleasant with lots of extras not usually available in holiday lets. We used torches for the evening short walks to the pub, partly on the road without a pavement.

Sorry it has taken me a long time to reply to your kind words in the feedback. I was very pleased that you had enjoyed your stay in the cottage. No street lights can be a problem but I hope that using a torch was more of a novelty than an inconvenience. You will be very welcome if you choose to come again. Property Owner

Dog friendly house and gardens (no gates out on to road, so not 100% secure) Warm and cosy with bags of charm. Owners very pleasant, only met Mrs. Great location for touring around the area, but care, some very narrow roads! Great pub 100 yds down the road.

Dear Mr Woodhall Thank you very much for your kind words about the cottage. We are delighted that you had an enjoyable holiday in spite of the rain. However we are puzzled that you say there is no gate as you drove past it every time you came and left the property. How could you miss it? We don’t claim that the property and garden are 100% secure, in spite of an electric fence surrounding the large upper garden and a large white 5-barred gate at the entrance, which you were at liberty to close. • "We really enjoyed our stay at Yeomans Cottage."

Friendly welcome from our host Marie with a lovely cream tea on arrival which was much appreciated. The cottage was great; clean and tidy, plenty big enough for the two of us and had everything we could need. The garden was beautiful and we were encouraged to explore and use it. It was also great to have our own private seating area, with welcome shade in the late afternoon during the really hot spell of weather. There was plenty to do in the area - several National Trust places very close by, walks at Ham Hill and Yeovil country parks plus we weren't too far from the Dorset Coast. We went to Lyne Regis and neighbouring villages and it was only an hour to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, which were both lovely. All in all we had a great holiday and would highly recommend. The only, only, negative really was that which has been commented on before - the shower. I don't know if there is a knack to it but I struggled with it a bit. However, we went knowing this might be an issue so it didn't spoil our holiday. Thank you both for a lovely holiday.

Thank you Janet for your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday. You certainly got about making use of the easy reach of the southern coast with its beauty spots, and the proximity of several National Trust houses and gardens. The fine weather certainly helped you to make the most of your holiday and fill your days with activity. Well done. Marie Wheatley Property Owner

  • "The owners are a lovely couple."

The cottage has a homely feel to it. The garden is amazing. We really enjoyed our 5 nights there. Just watch out the hot water is very very hot. It is a shame that it is not a full shower in the bathroom but have spoken to the owner she was going to look into for the future. The shower attachment is a little hit & miss with the temperature so be aware before washing your hair etc with it. We would love to return to the cottage but it really would need an shower in place of the bath as with rheumatoid arthritis in my hands getting out of the bath was difficult.. the sofa was a little low for me but again the owner was going to look at replacing this also in the future. The owner had made us scones /jam & cream... still warm too on arrival. So we would love to know when the updates are done to look at returning.

Thank you for your kind comments. We very much enjoyed meeting you both. The sofa has been replaced, but in searching for one with higher elevations it seems that most are standard. A plumber is lined up, for yet another visit, so here’s hoping to get the pressure on the shower head regulated, and will investigate the possibility of replacing the bath with a shower cabinet. Hoping to welcome you again sometime. Property Owner

They were particularly kind when my husband had a health problem and we had to leave early. We did find the sofa a bit uncomfortable, but otherwise a great destination.

Thank you for your kind words. John and I are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay even though it had to be cut short. We certainly enjoyed your company and we’re very sad that you had to lose a couple of days. We do hope that David’s problem can be solved sufficiently to enable him to continue with his lifelong hobby. You’ll be pleased to hear that the sofa has been replaced. Property Owner

Lovely garden and views. Found the shower head impossible to use - either too hot or too cold. With a small adjustment to the plumbing you could balance out the hot and cold water, this would make it a lot more comfortable. Otherwise a very enjoyable stay.

Thank you for your kind words and for pointing out the difficulty with the water pressure. Plumbers have been consulted from time to time, and another appointment is arranged, but it seems to be a problem with the elevation of the water tank. Property Owner

You also advertised secure garden but my dog had to be on a lead at all times as she could have walked out into the road. My husband cannot get in or out of a bath so needs a shower, but you needed to be 2ft tall to get under the shower, you could take it off the wall to hold it by hand but there was no shower curtain to stop the water going everywhere, for the money you pay needs a bit of improvement.

Enjoying a peaceful position within the countryside setting of South Somerset and within striking distance of Dorset and its stunning coastline, is this wonderfully transformed barn conversion, Yeoman Cottage.

Tucked away in the grounds of the one-acre garden of a 16th century village house, this south-facing property is the perfect retreat for a couple seeking to spend some quality time together and to explore the several delights that are within the surrounding area.

Be welcomed into the warming aura of the cosy cottage by stepping into the spacious porch, where an oak chest is located, holding an array of brochures and maps to assist you in planning the day’s ahead whilst staying here.

From here, you will find the well-equipped kitchen, containing a range of quality appliances including a washing machine, so that you can easily wash your belongings after an action-packed day of exploring.

Once you have made use of the kitchen appliances to cook up a hearty meal, settle down at the dining table with your partner to relish in a bottle of wine as you tuck into dinner.

Afterwards, retreat into the traditionally furnished sitting room; admire the pretty pictures, refreshing décor and William Morris linen curtains before sinking into the plush seating arrangement and flicking on the TV with a DVD player to wind down the evening.

During the summer months, be sure to open up the patio doors to allow a fresh breeze to filter into the room or step out onto patio area to catch the final glimpses of sunshine as it's perfect for alfresco dining.

Once the evening has drawn to a close, catch your rest in the bedroom, where the oak beams frame the well-presented double bed and the dual aspect windows, which offer pretty views to wake up to each morning.

Continuing to impress, the cottage is surrounded by a well-maintained garden, which you are welcome to explore, home to a wildlife pond, cordoned fruit trees, summerhouse and a kitchen garden, with produce available according to the season.

If you can tear yourself away from this tranquil oasis, take a leisurely stroll to The Muddled Man, a traditional local pub serving food and a welcoming atmosphere to complement, or travel slightly further afield to the village of Norton-Sub-Hamdon, where you will find another pub and a shop for picking up any essentials.

Keen walkers can take their pick from the wide variety of walks from the doorstep of the cottage, including Ham Hill Country Park for incredible views of the South Somerset Moors, Exmoor and the Mendip Hills.

Head to Sutton Bingham Reservoir to find opportunities for fishing, sailing and birdwatching or delve into the local area’s past by visiting the Haynes International Motor Museum near Sparkford and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton.

Guests of Yeoman Cottage will also be spoilt for choice by the number of National Trust properties within the area, including Montacute House, the Priest's House, Lytes Cary Manor and Lambert's Castle.

For those willing to venture further afield, spend summer afternoons along the Dorset coast to visit the town of Lyme Regis, a centre for fossil exploration and the iconic Durdle Door arch.

With so much to see and do, Yeoman Cottage is a wonderful retreat to enjoy all year around.
