  • "Really lovely village and central."

For what we wanted Cottage clean and tidy although needs the soft furnishings updating as seemed Really worn Had an issue with the TV at first but read over the Information and soon resolved this Hot water was running out pretty quick after 2 showers and had to then wait for hot water Think needs mentioning that the bathroom is really small and if you are on the larger size it's a tight squeeze Apart from things mentioned the cottage was well equipped and clean A possible storage cupboard for food Items as there was no space to put food

  • "We enjoyed a lovely week at Badgers Cottage in September."

It is a charming cottage full of character and very comfortable. The equipment was first class. For a cottage of this age and nature it is very spacious apart from the bathroom which we were warned in advance was very compact. There was a large enclosed garden at the rear safe for our dogs with a huge fruit laden apple tree. We are very mobile pensioners in our late seventies, but the challenge of the steep steps from the back of the cottage to the first level was daunting and from a safety point of view really required some type of hand rail to avoid potentially a serious accident. The location of the cottage for touring the Dorset coast is ideal. It is a shame that the Elm Tree pub opposite was closed down as this would have been a great asset during our stay. The village is charming and the walk down to The Fleet is worth the effort. All in all a most enjoyable Autumn break in this homely cottage.

  • "The cottage itself was basic but full of character and was fine, there were some holes in the sofa, the windows were dirty and the downstairs TV didn’t work, the upstairs TV wasn't great either."

My big issue was the website stated that there was a pub adjacent to the cottage but this closed down last year, so this statement is misleading. There was no where else within walking distance to get a meal or drink. If I had known this I would not have booked.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed the cottage. We have been extremely saddened by the closing of the Elm Tree which we have enjoyed for over 50 years. The village is actively trying to work together to rescue it if possible. We are very sorry that by not changing the website you felt mislead. That section has now been removed. We will be down in a few weeks and will check the sofa. We were not aware that there were any holes. The television downstairs normally works well. We would advise any guests to contact Sykes as soon as you find that something is not working. Hopefully then it can be sorted quickly so that you can enjoy your stay fully. Best wishes, Paul and Peppy Property Owner

  • "Badgers Cottage - absolutely fabulous."

A perfect cosy cottage, ideal for anyone wanting to get in a few miles on the SW coastal path or do some birdwatching as the walk down to The Fleet only takes about 15-20 minutes from the front door. Also a great base for going further afield, with Lulworth, Corfe, Durdle Door, Dorchester, Maiden Castle etc all within an hour's travel. Very well equipped, there was nothing we needed in the kitchen that wasn't already provided. The enclosed back garden is very secure for children and/or dogs and was a lovely place to sit and chill. Highly recommended.

  • "It’s the worst cottage I’ve ever stayed in, and we’ve never had the feeling where we want to get home."

We arrived in the dark, and went straight to bed, however even in the tiredness there was a smell. We woke up the following day, and the first thing we done was to go in the garden with the dogs. They couldn’t use it as it was so overgrown they couldn’t walk through it, and there was dog poo everywhere. There is a resident next door who said he cleared the path of dog poo also. The owner did get the garden sorted. I wouldn’t also class the garden as enclosed. Anyone at anytime can walk through as there’s a path that runs through the middle, it also isn’t very accessible and it’s quite dangerous, especially the steps down to the house as they are steep. Even worse when it’s been raining as there is a lot of moss which is very slippery. There are also two dog bowls in the garden which have been sat there a while as they had green algae floating in them. Back to the property, the smell we couldn’t get rid of and it stuck to all of our clothes. Unfortunately there is no washing machine to be able to wash the clothes. The property itself needs renovation work done as it’s very dated and also not practical. The floorboards in areas rock and squeak so loud so you cannot get up during the night without waking everyone up. The stairs are dangerously steep and narrow. They are not child or dog friendly, as an adult can barely get down them without holding on. The ceilings are also so low going into the bathroom you have to remember to duck. The bathroom is just not practical, it’s tiny. If you are of a larger size then I wouldn’t bother booking! The toilet flush is temperamental, the water in the sink ran out brown on and off which was disgusting. The shower has mould in, and the shower is just appalling. There is no water pressure unless you’d like an ice cold shower. You have to turn it right up and run it for a good 5 minutes before any hot water comes out (same with taps throughout), and it dribbles! It eventually scalds you and then you turn to put a little cold water in the mix and it turns to ice. Downstairs was ok, again just very dated and smelt. The sofa is squeaky. The kitchen is also tiny, and has to be spread out for storage into the dining room. The fridge was turned off when we arrived so had to switch that on to get it cold and the freezer door was broken. The windows are draughty and the bedroom one didn’t close properly. We also had rain when staying and they leaked water inside. The front door and porch door also need sorting as they don’t close properly. The porch door is very worse for wear as it’s splitting and is probably due to be replaced. The last thing, is the parking. It’s appalling that a cottage hasn’t got any form of parking. It confuses me why all the others along the row have parking round the side and this one doesn’t? You have to leave your car parked against a wall tight, on a narrow country road. There is a pub opposite which the owner could make an agreement with that one car could park there! Overall, I wouldn’t stay here again and we were really disappointed as it looked really lovely in the images but Sykes really need to update the listing to be accurate. I did contact during the stay, but they were so slow to respond that I gave up waiting. We spend so much time travelling the UK with the dogs, and go to a lot of cottages, but this one just doesn’t seem fit to be renting out to the public. It really needs updating and work done prior to doing this! We thought maybe because it was a listed property, that’s why they’ve not done anything with it, but then we looked on a competitors website at the rental cottage next door and they’ve made it practical! I feel so bad but someone needs to be honest to help get this improved and it’s very disappointing at present.

We are very sorry that you had a number of problems during your stay. The smell was unfortunately due to a tiny dead mouse in the corner of the attic. It must have got in when the thatch ridge was renewed this winter. There was a problem with the mixer tap in the shower which has now been addressed. The lavatory flush just needs one firm push to operate it. Rain has been a problem for the gardener. It is unfortunate that people leave dog poo in the garden. We have asked our cleaners to check that the cooker and fridge are on and that they clear any dog bowls left outside. Our cottage is one of two thatched cottages dating back to the 18th century. We like to keep it rustic and as original as we can. The hatch doors at the front and the back are custom made. They allow one to enjoy the view with no risk of children or pets running outside. The draught proofing in the porch is very efficient which is why it is hard to close the front door. It helps if you close one door after the other. The upside is that we gain the extra comfort of using the porch. The bedroom windows are new and they do close. Two of the artisan latches though have been placed unusually and so they close from top down. The design, level and stone of the cottage does not lend itself to more extension and so the kitchen and bathroom will remain compact and we will not be able to place a washing machine. The ceilings are low and the staircase is steep. All of this is mentioned in the cottage information. The neighbour is likely to have been a guest like yourselves as both cottages either side get rented out. At the top of the cottage garden there is a right of way but both sides close securely with a gate. This is necessary for the gardener and other people to get equipment into the cottages. Both thatched cottages have the use of residential parking up the road on the right. If these spaces are taken then there is plenty of street parking on Church Road. We apologise again and hope this helps. Property Owner

  • "It’s a lovely cottage and location."

The cottage has comfortably sized bedrooms, living room and dining room. The original open fireplace is a lovely addition although not needed for a summer stay. We liked being able to pop over the road for a drink in the good quality pub-restaurant and loved being able to walk through the fields to the coast and observe local wildlife: deer, hares and many birds. Langton Herring is in easy reach of Weymouth, Lulworth Cove, Bridport and Lyme Regis. We didn’t like the tiny bathroom or having to crouch to move from room to room upstairs. Smartening up the bathroom would help a lot, as would some subtle signage to remind guests to duck to avoid banging their head at the top of the stairs. Parking was fine once we’d worked it out. A map of where to park would be much more useful than the photos provided in the folder. Having to double bag all rubbish, as stated in the host’s information folder, was the worst thing. Having paid a lot of money, being required to fish rubbish out of the bin to double-bag it just so the owner can avoid paying trade rates for waste felt very unwelcome. It’s not our responsibility to help someone avoid paying taxes they don’t like.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay in Langton Herring which is a delightful village. Our cottage has many original features and the ceilings are low particularly on the landing. Fitting a bathroom at all was an architectural feat by my mother as the next door cottage is nestled behind ours and receives light from our back yard. It is unavoidably small but it is efficient and has a wonderful view across the cottage garden catching the morning light. The rubbish is a challenge. When we used the council trade collection we caused upset to the neighbours as the wheelie bins had to be wheeled through their gardens to reach the road. Collection is also once a week and so did not provide the flexibility of booking which we now have. Thanks to Kieron and his team at Dorset cleaners they arrange to collect the rubbish on whichever day our guests choose to leave, take it through the cottage and then back at their base personally check the recycling before it is sent away. When Covid came they requested double bagging all rubbish in the property, which considering the risks to them and their families seemed a very sensible solution. We can only apologise for any inconvenience which this may cause our guests. We will upload a map of the village to help with the parking. Property Owner

  • "Very picturesque thatched cottage."

I've never been in such an old cottage before. And unfortunately didn't appreciate how low the ceilings were going to be and how small the bathroom was.. struggled with being claustrophobic, especially in the bathroom. Of which headroom and lighting at the top of the stairs was very poor. I bashed my head every day.. Saying that we had a very pleasant stay..

We are very sorry that you were inconvenienced by the low ceilings. We have addressed the lighting and will continue to do so. Many people do not like harsh lighting on the landing when they use the bathroom at night. We will think about a dimmer system. Property Owner

❤️ towels provided and plenty of storage space in bedrooms. However,as mentioned in the listing and another review steps outside and staircase inside are steep and trip hazards,we left the upstairs light on all night to help navigate the steps up and down the landing into rooms and the loo which helped.I would say dog tolerant as opposed to dog friendly,I completely understand the no dogs on beds /furniture rules but the floor's pretty hard to sit on for long if your dogs are soppy lap dogs like ours

Thank you for your lovely feedback. We cannot change the stairs but we do recommend bringing a big soft doggy bed down with you when you visit the cottage. Our lovely lab travels down in his. Unfortunately cleaning the smell and dog hairs off the beds and sofas for guests each time is just too difficult particularly for families who don't share our love of furry friends. We are very glad that you enjoyed your visit and hope that you will come again. Property Owner

  • "Hi We’ve been staying at Badger Cottage, Langton Ferrers."

The stay and the cottage have been very pleasant. A few items to make you aware of: 1. The middle shelf in the fridge door has part of the plastic lug missing so the shelf is unstable and falls out if anything is put on it. 2. The shower is dripping slightly but constantly when turned fully off suggesting washers need changing. 3. It would be useful for the cottage to have a couple of thin seat mats that could be taken outside to use on the garden benches as these are damp in the morning or wet after rain. Sykes don’t make it easy to communicate with anyone: emails bounce or aren’t answered, I have to have an “account “ with them to leave feedback, and the online feedback form keeps crashing out wasting time. Otherwise all fine!

Thank you so much for your feedback. It is very helpful. We will sort the fridge and shower as soon as we can. It is a good idea to get seat mats for the benches. We will try to find some and think about where to keep them. I am sorry that communication is a problem. I am sure that Sykes will try to sort it. Property Owner

  • "We had a really lovely stay at Badgers Cottage, starting with a wonderful welcome package full of delicious local produce, which was a real treat."

The beautiful cottage was very well equipped, with every pot, pan, and utensil you could need, including a slow cooker, and the living room had the comfiest sofa I'd ever sat on. The garden was a real sun-trap and the bench overlooking a field of lambs was the perfect spot for a cuppa and a book. Langton Herring is so peaceful and The Elm Tree Inn is a stone's throw from the front door. Plenty of beautiful walks with stunning views and all the people we met were really friendly. It was great base for days out to Weymouth, Portland, Abbotsbury & Durdle Door. The only feedback I'd have is that the bathroom needed a little TLC, but we were informed about this prior to our visit. Also, we had a couple of blustery days and there was a lot of noise coming from the chimney in the twin room, I think where there's a covering to prevent drafts which blew about a bit. Boys were happier once we'd established this wasn't a ghost. ;) Overall I would not hesitate to recommend Badgers Cottage as a perfect base for a Dorset holiday. Thank you for helping us make happy family memories.
