The owners were lovely and friendly and helpful too. We loved the big garden as did our dog. The area was very peaceful and I would have liked to stay longer. The only negative was that the fridge is very small, you can’t stock up fridge items so meant lots of trips to the shops. Still a lovely home from home and so great to find somewhere so dog friendly.

  • "I would prefer there was a washing machine rather than a dishwasher"

We considered the choice catrefully. Most visitors are short-stay, very few for 2 weeks. Visitors can always use our own washing macjine - you only need to ask! When finances allow we intend to renovate an unused part of the buildings to be a utility area. Property Owner

  • "Nice enough cottage and the owners are helpful and lovely."

However the place suffered from old fashioned heating that worked only when it wanted . There were too many cobwebs and spiders which I felt could of been cleaned up before we arrived. If you can see past these things then it is a comfortable stay at the cheaper price I paid . I wouldn't pay top rates for this cottage. I have to be honest even though I hate it because has I mentioned, the owners are lovely people who will do what they can for your stay.

As it happens we are about to spend several thousand pounds on replacing the old (about 25 years) storage heaters with modern ones which work a lot better and are much more controllable. Mary is fastidious about cobwebs and spiders - but in a centuries old property the spiders are very quick at find their way in. Property Owner

The cottage is perfect for a holiday on the coast of southern England: quiet and not too far away from nearby attractions. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The interior of the house is fine, not luxurious but everything you need is there. And the dog was very welcome, all the basic facilities were present for her too!

  • "A good base to see West Dorset."

Good : owners friendly , outside areas . large tv .toiletries,wine,milk. no dog smells ! Suggestions: need more plates/mugs/bowls to be able to use dishwasher as if we had stacked the dishwasher we wouldn't have any to use. some more smaller oven trays would be useful as well as a pizza tray / rolling pin . Some New bedlinen & towels would be of benefit. Settee covers could do with a wash ! Obviously damp issues on walls as patches show through the paint & we could smell it when we open the kitchen cupboards below the cooker. . The storage heaters were old & rusty in places. We didn't need to use them ! I think if a bit more money was spent on these issues it would be a good rental to return to.

Thanks for your valuable feedback. A pity you did not raise these points when you were here as several could have been sorted at the time. Most feedback we get says the cottage is very well cleaned and very well equipped but we do keep extra for anyone who asks. Yes - there are still some damp patches - the cottage was ill maintained when we bought it and drying out old rubble filled walls is a very long process indeed. Property Owner

A real treasure. Cottage perfect for us.Bed towel bowls and treats for our little dog which was great. Owners lovely and on had if needed but politely left us to our privacy. Plenty of spaces outside to relax after a day out. Pergola too if a shower occurs. The whole place was so relaxing. Perfect after the stresses of life and work. Even a bottle of fresh milk left in the fridge for a cup of tea after a long journey. Everything was thought of for the comfort and welcoming of us as will definitely recommend to friends and family. Most relaxing of locations with excellent pubs nearby. Cottage had everything we needed and Mary and Richard the most friendly and hospitable of owners had left everything we needed to operate in the kitchen including a welcoming bottle of wine, biscuits, milk, tea, coffee etc. First class, a lot of thought had gone into the needs of guests to get them up and running. Only one little thing which would make a big difference when cleaning teeth or shaving would be a light fixed to the beam above the bathroom mirror to illuminate it more effectively. A simple job for Richard !

The cottage is very well equipped and the owners are on hand to help you if needed. Watch out though for the beams and low ceiling on stairs; might be good idea to put warning or a soft covering on wall. The location benefits from being about 5mins to Crewkerne which has a large Waitrose and Lidle so you are able to pick up practically all you need. The use of a small garden area is available for guests - lovely - we took our dog and would kindly suggest the garden is somehow enclosed so your dog cannot go off wondering into the larger gardens. The owners are working on the gardens which are incredible and looking to have a games room in one of the outbuildings. We will definitely consider another visit.

Thank you for your review. We intend to follow your suggestion. Thank you Property Owner

The walks to two villages with eating and drinking was just across the road which the owners were very informative about. Being a draw back was there were no food facilities in the village! It was infact the prettiest village we have been too. The massive gardens were unbeleivable with plenty of places to sit and relax after a day of walking!

We received this review in July! An interesting comment as the customer did not stay! They had booked for April. We did not know when to expect them, they arrived quite late. We were frequently watching for them. My wife saw them driving out of the courtyard so they could not have been here more than a few minutes. They did not stop to speak. Fortunately other visitors do not share their opinion. You can't please everyone but we do seem to have a very high success rate. Property Owner

  • "The Old Bakery is a beautiful looking cottage and very comfortable to stay in."

It was equipped with everything you could think off and more. All the little extras were a lovely surprise. Mary, Richard and off course poppy were fantastic host and nothing was too much trouble. I would say the best feature is the garden, my son loved it. There were places to hide, places to run and play, places to climb and best of all the river. Richard took the time to show us what was in it. There was always something new to see in the garden each day. A fantastic place for little explorers. The cottage is a little way from the beach and other attractions but it didn’t matter to us too much, as it was nice to see new places and the scenery. The shops are a 6 minute drive and about the same for a pub meal. We had a lovely time staying here and would recommend it. Thank you for a great holiday.

  • "The old bakery is a very quirky cottage with old original features, the bedroom doors in particular are interesting!"

The kitchen is modern and has everything you need, but the dining area was very tight and the 3 of us could not fit around the table. The WiFi facility was excellent, especially with a teenager in tow. The owners are really friendly and recommended restaurants and places to visit and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The only downside for us was the garden area, the seating area is not attached to the cottage, you have to go down some paths to get there and it’s also a bit overgrown, so for us who like popping outside for alfresco breakfast or lunch, it wasn’t really suitable which was a bit disappointing.

  • "Unfortunately the cottage did not meet the standards we usually find with a Sykes’s cottage."

On entering we were met with a musty smell which caused us to go and purchase a Febreeze plug in. The bin in the kitchen had not been emptied. The amount of cobwebs and spiderwebs were unacceptable even for an old quirky cottage. The carpet felt spongy and moist underfoot. The view from the cottage was of a cardboard box and empty bottles full of water??? The path to the garden was obstructed by trip hazards, electrical cables being used to charge garden equipment that was being housed with no covering. Ladders left with ropes against trees and a plugged in chainsaw in the grass. We have an adventurous 10 year old who is disciplined and is very aware of danger but not sure every child would not have found these tools as toys! Unfortunately would not recommend at this time.
