  • "We have had a fabulous holiday at the Fire Station - thank you very much, Mark and Jeanette."

You have kitted the cottage out extremely well, it is bright and spacious, with a completely enclosed dog-friendly garden. Also thanks for the welcome extras - wine, tea, coffee, milk etc.

  • "Had a fabulous time at this property."

Location suited our needs, and weather was perfect, garden in the sun and nice to relax in, astroturfing a bit tired, but didn’t affect our enjoyment. Would have no hesitation in recommending this property.

  • "Spacious property but unfortunately was let down by the filthy ovens."

The main oven was unusable. The sofas had stains on them which had been highlighted by a previous guest but had not been cleaned. A pity because the location was good and village pub made us welcome.

  • "Had a lovely 2 week stay in The Old Fire Station."

It has been sympathetically renovated, keeping many of the original features. Kitchen fully equipped. Lovely bath. Had a problem with lightswitch, contacted Mark & it was replaced within a few hours. The only reason didn't get full marks was due to stains on one of the settees. As there were only 2 if us wasn't such a problem as we used the other one. (Couldn't find the fault logbook to comment) Lovely area, friendly locals & welcoming pubs. Lots of lovely local walks. .

  • "Great cottage."

Well equipped. Spacious rooms. We liked it being all on one level. The garden was very secure for the dog. Bath was delightful. Good location for exploring surrounding seaside resorts.

  • "A great quirky property with plenty of space both inside and outside."

We enjoyed the location, a great local pub with delicious food, also handy to explore the region of Kent and more. The four spacious bedrooms and easy access meant that we managed very well with a wheelchair user and space to store the chair., though not a fully accessible property/bathrooms we managed. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you would need everyday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

The facilities were clean but the plumbing needed to be sorted in bathroom and continual drip in kitchen. We loved staying there would love to return and would recommend it

  • "We had a lovely week at the Old Fire Station, nice spacious rooms that are light and airy."

The lounge is tired though and needs new sofas and the carpet cleaned. The kitchen tap drips continually and the plumbing makes lots of noise. The windows need a good clean, they look awful when the sun shines, and soft close toilet seats need replacing as they aren't soft close anymore! Having said that it is a great place to explore the sea sides of Deal, Walmer, Dover and many more.

We didn’t use our car all week as we found plenty of walking routes from the accommodation. The Old Fire Station is spacious and comfortable. Recommended.

  • "We had a lovely week and would highly recommend The Old Fire Station, for a pleasant, stress free break."

The property is every bit as spacious, bright and clean as it looks in the pictures and has a secure outside area for the dog, with access to the garden, via a side gate ...for those muddy returns. The owners were welcoming and we contacted them directly with a couple of requests and they were very helpful and accommodating. Everything was just easy! The accommodation itself was well stocked with all the stuff that it's so easy to forget: condiments, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, ...even a welcoming bottle of wine :) It's a nice touch. The owners also have a dog themselves and a very common sense approach to bringing a dog. We weren't given long lists of rules; we were just asked to be sensible and respectful, which goes a long way to making us all feel welcome (2 and 4 legs). - Recommend taking a look at sunrise times. A short walk or drive down to the bay early in the mornings is a must, with beautiful red skies as the sun comes up over the channel and little egrets dotted around the waters edge, looking for breakfast. - We had a couple of very pleasant walks up on the white cliffs. The Lighthouse is only about 20 minutes away and well worth a visit. There's a little cafe and shop ...and even kites to borrow. There are peregrine falcons nesting on the cliffs, which I hadn't expected and was a bit of a treat. A little further along the cliffs, the deep shelter (no dogs) was very interesting (if you like steep steps). Lots of stonechats around the shelter. Wasn't particularly impressed with Samphire Hoe. But that could just have been the time of year. It's supposed to be a good birding site ...perhaps not so much in October. There's a lovely little museum and coffee shop in St Margarets itself. Definitely worth a visit! Also a nice rec with a well stocked kids play area in the corner and a friendly village shop on the other side of the rec. Dover :( doesn't look like it's changed much since I lived there 40+ years ago, though the castle is beautiful up on the hill. For a seaside day out, perhaps Folkestone; the harbour has been done up and, whilst pleasantly quiet in October, I imagine it is quite lively in the summer months. We found black backed gulls devouring small sharks under the harbour wall. Also a lovely walk up to the Martello tower. In the other direction, Deal remains quite a pretty seaside fishing town. The pier is accessible, though there were long queues for the cafe, even in October. Deal castle is my favourite of the three (Walmer and Dover are very expensive in comparison). What I love about Deal castle is the rounds (or dungeons as we used to call them) ...and running round them with pretend guns, playing hide and seek and getting scared in the dark spaces was every bit as much fun at 59 as it was when I was 9. Also close enough for days out: - Maidstone. Mote Park is still nice and has high ropes, and the usual ducks, geese, cormorants, etc. It looks busy, but 2 minutes away from the car park and it's quiet and rather pleasant. - Canterbury. Full of history and beautiful buildings - Sandwich. Where we found flocks of ring-necked parakeets ...didn't see that coming! Loads more to do. But, hey, we only had a week. It's really nice to have the walks, history, birding and sea breeze. But also have a house that is simply nice, spacious and comfortable, for those lazy days.

  • "We are a family of 5 and spent a week at the Old Fire Station."

This is a spacious property and has been newly furbished to a very high quality. Despite being a new building, the actual plot has huge amounts of history, which for those with Fire Engine Obsessed children is ideal The owners are really thoughtful in the way that they welcome guests: a guide to the house and surrounding areas, basic provisions eg milk, coffee, oil and salt to get the holiday started, they even have a selection of games for days when the weather is not ideal and books of all types to peruse. The location is great for exploring the Kent coast and the neighbours are also very friendly. Parking directly in front of the front door and an enclosed simple back garden make this place safe for children too. This was our first holiday in 3 years and was delightful. The hosts’ hospitality, high standards of cleanliness were greatly appreciated and our children particularly enjoyed the little treats that the owners left for them in the freezer. Wonderful stay, would thoroughly recommend!

About the location

ST MARGARET'S AT CLIFFE

Dover 4 miles; Deal 5.5 miles; Folkestone 12 miles; Canterbury 18.5 miles

This delightful little spot rests along the famous and idyllic White Cliffs of Dover, on the South Foreland Heritage Coast of Kent. St Margaret's at Cliffe also contains the neighbouring village of St Margarate's Bay, both of which offer a choice of charming local amenities, you can also find the Dover Patrol Memorial, the Pines Garden Tea Room and Museum and the striking Foreland Lighthouse - all of which are worth a look around. A gap in the cliffs presents a lovely shingle beach with opportunities for rock-pooling and a pub serving food which overlooks it as well as being opposite the house previously occupied by Noel Coward and Ian Fleming. This is the point from which swimmers of the English Channel depart. Dover sits just four miles away with it's famous castle, attractive seafront, pier and marina and much more to see and do. The Kent Downs AONB is within a stone's throw for avid walkers and cyclists, while many more characterful coastal spots can be found close by; Folkestone, Ramsgate and Margate to name but a few. The unique and striking cathedral city of Canterbury is also within reach for a different experience.
