  • "We always like looking for little cottage type properties when we go away and that's what we got!"

!! Details and pictures online are very accurate. Poppy cottage has everything you need, feels cosy and was very clean. Very easy to find and in a great location for visiting surrounding well known places. The garden is private and spacious with bird feeders where we had a woodpecker visit everyday. We also had lambs in the field to the side which were lovely to watch. Roger popped round a couple of times and was very friendly and helpful. They made sure we had everything we needed as well as changes in towels, bedding etc. Even though we were amongst 3 cottages we never heard anything. Fantastic outbuilding with washer, dryer, airers, irons etc, but also big freezers where you can store food which was very helpful. Overall we loved this 14 night stay and would definitely recommend and will be booking again if visiting that area. Thanks guys, don't change anything, it was perfect x

Thank you so much for the lovely review.we are so glad the cottage ticked all the right boxes! It was a pleasure to meet you both and look forward to seeing you again in the future Property Owner

  • "Poppy cottage was nice and clean and comfortable."

It is well placed to view the Lakes and other attractions nearby. We had bad weather but the cosiness of the cottage made up for that. There is everything you need in the cottage and is great for a couple to get away from cityscapes. There are wonderful views outside the window and many birds flock to the bird feeder outside the kitchen window. It's a great place to unwind. Val and Roger are nice and informative. They don't intrude on your stay if you want your privacy but are at hand if you need anything.

Situated just off the A66 giving good access to Ulswater, Penrith, Keswick & the Northern Fells. There is a very well equipped kitchen. On arrival, there was tea, coffee, biscuits, milk & juice waiting, a practical & thoughtful touch from the owners. Cosy lounge with a log burner that came set up ready for a nights fire. There was storage space for my bike. The owners live next door & were helpful on arrival. Excellent value, will stay again.

The property

Poppy Cottage is a beautifully converted one bedroom holiday home in the northern Lake District just 10 minutes' drive from the bustling town of Penrith, the 'gateway to the Lakes'. Built from local stone and finished to an extremely high standard, Poppy Cottage marries period charm with contemporary luxury and is the ideal romantic retreat from which to explore this spellbinding part of the world. At the end of a row of three cottages, Poppy Cottage has bags of character like the original beams and the wood burning stove set in the feature fireplace of the living room.

There's squashy seating to curl up in front of the fire and superb views over the surrounding countryside.

You can access the private patio and garden from the French windows.

The Shaker style dining kitchen is fully equipped and upstairs there's a boutique hotel style double bedroom with en-suite luxury shower room and, of course, those gorgeous views. Outside there's a really lovely private garden with a patio area, lawn and beautiful planting - the ideal spot to relax after a busy day hiking, cycling or simply sightseeing.

Poppy Cottage also has private off road parking and there's a large enclosed paddock with picnic tables and a shared BBQ.

You'll also have access to the fully equipped laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer plus ample space for drying all your outdoor gear. Penruddock is conveniently located just a few miles off the M6 and there are two pubs within a mile of the cottage.

Just 10 minutes drive away there's shopping, bars and restaurants at Penrith and the tranquil Caldbeck fells are almost on the doorstep if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the Lake District. But with Lake Ullswater and the beautiful town of Keswick just 15 minutes away, you're in the ideal position to explore the stunning scenery of the North Lakes with some of the most outstanding hiking and cycling trails in the country.

Climb the stairs to the Bowder Stone, or test yourself against the Keswick climbing wall.

Cruise the lakes on one of the steamers or visit the Lake District Distillery and sample world-class Lakeland whisky.

If you want to see the beauties of the Southern Lakes, take a drive over the scenic Kirkstone Pass to Lake Windermere. However you decide to enjoy your romantic break in the Lake District, Poppy Cottage makes the perfect retreat at any time of year.

About the location

PENRUDDOCK

Keswick 11 miles; Penrith 6 miles.

The charming old village of Penruddock sits in a secluded position in the northern Lake District between Keswick and Penrith, and just four miles from Ullswater. The village is spread out amongst beautiful rolling countryside and wonderful scenery and is made up of a number of farm dwellings, traditional Lakeland homes and two churches. Penruddock originated in Celtic times, with the name derived from Pen, a Celtic name for 'hill' and 'rhuddawc' meaning red in Welsh to reflect the reddish brown colour of the soil found in the area. Nearby, the popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the north of the Lake District and has plenty to offer, boasting numerous shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, some good parks, the Theatre by the Lake, a charming cinema and the beautiful lake. Penruddock provides easy access to the spectacular surrounding Cumbrian countryside which can be explored by both car and on foot, and with the southern Lakes, Eden Valley, Solway Coast and Hadrian's Wall all within easy motoring distance this great location has plenty to see and do for all the family.
