  • "Stayed in Abbots Reading Mews 2 for a week of hiking and exploring the Lakes."

I’ve been using Sykes for 9 years now so always have trust in them. The cottage itself is in a lovely location, grounds are lovely and the farmer next door is a welcoming man! Just very basic inside unfortunately. First cottage I’ve come to where we didn’t have a little welcome pint of milk/ treat etc waiting as a thank you and hello for the cost you pay, each to their own on how they welcome guests but after a 270mile 7hour traffic filled car journey, it was a little upsetting that this wasn’t there as then we needed to go back out to get a pint of milk.. We had 5 hangers in the very large wardrobe, it has been brought up over past comments but it’s not been sorted a minimum of 10-15 hangers should be in there. The WiFi wasn’t the best- although states a stone cottage and the routers is far from the signal etc this day and age there are ways of getting a strong connection with plug in signal extenders so had to drive /walk half way up the road to get signal to then plan our day. Also the bed is extremely uncomfortable, I had a spring pop into my side one night and had to spend the rest of the week on the sofa with a towel as a cover. The room is huge so could easily fit a king size bed too with a good thick topper. We had window cleaners on the Thursday early morning which isn’t the best when walking around after just showering and no warning from the cottage owner. Quite a shame as the cottage and service could be wonderful if a little thought and love went into their business. The little things make such a difference

Dear Georgia, Thanks for your feedback, glad you liked the location & grounds but disappointed you were dissatisfied with Abbots Reading Mews2 itself. Obviously we all have different opinions but I hadn't considered Mews2 to be "very basic" & I can assure you a lot of thought & care went into the conversion, furnishing & equipping of it. We did previously supply a pint of fresh milk but with the different types & increasing varieties found significant wastage so have opted for supplying UHT cartons of semi-skimmed milk together with tea, coffee & sugar sachets for guests arriving prior to a local shop for provisions. These were present. I did actually thank you very much for choosing to stay at Mews2 in an email prior to your stay & also welcomed you in different way by saying you were welcome to arrive 2hrs earlier than the official 4pm arrival time. I also provided you with some local information which I had put a lot of thought & care into with postcodes, travelling times & distances to various local pubs, shops, attractions & walks to assist with planning your days & hopefully saving you some time. I have increased the number of hangers, thanks for pointing this out. We do have BT Superfast Fibre Plus with Unbreakable Wifi. There is also a hardwired wireless access point between Mews1&2. I did speed test the Wifi after your review & measured 28.8 Mbps in the 1st floor living room & admittedly it's a bit slower at 19.1 to 24.9 Mbps in the ground floor bedroom which is hopefully still acceptable to most guests. I think having to drive/walk half way up the road to get a signal is more to do with coverage by your own mobile phone service provider. I'm so sorry you found the bed extremely uncomfortable, if you had contacted me by phone, text or email during your stay I could have immediately checked this out & maybe turned the mattress, provided you with another topper and/or additional duvet rather than making do with a towel on the sofa. It is a Hotel Howden commercial standard mattress but the type of mattress is a very personal matter making it difficult to satisfy everyone. We do have a number of repeat guests staying in Mews2 which hopefully supports the bed being comfortable & acceptable. I'm sorry the window cleaners arrived with no warning but I have no say over their arrival days & times, we fit in with their busy schedule, probably much the same as at home for most people. This hopefully adds to the overall cleanliness & enjoyment of Abbots Reading Mews2 which is a priority for us & I can assure you we do put thought, love & care into our business, I agree they make a difference. Best regards Mark Property Owner

This was our second stay at this lovely cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The location is perfect. Very peaceful and many locations just a short drive away. The owners are very helpful, many thanks Mark & Louise. Parking is plentiful and some great walks from the cottage. We would highly recommend staying at this cottage. We were lucky as we had 4 brilliant days of sun and found a fantastic pub The Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank which is about a 15 minute drive with stunning views. Would we stay here again, most definitely. Thanks for a great stay, Derek & Wendy, Byron and Bailey . PS: Also kudos to Sykes Cottages. Booking process very easy with all the necessary correspondence via emails making everything extremely easy.

The property was easy to find, the hosts gave us clear directions on how to find the property and where to collect the key. After a lot of activities during the day, it was nice to come back to somewhere clean and comfy. We were really able to relax in the evenings. The gardens were also really well kept. Everything we needed for a short break away was available in the property. The location was fab, we really couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you having us, we’ll definitely be back.

The property is very clean and comfortable and in a beautiful setting with good access to many places in the Lakes. The owners, Mark and Louise are very helpful and were keen to make our stay a good one. Our two dogs, Danish, Swedish Farm dogs, Baldur and Bensi, although getting old now, enjoyed the walks very much, especially the woodland walk at the back of the property. We would definitely return. • "We had a lovely stay in Mews 2."

The house is very clean and feels really cosy. It's in a very peaceful area surrounded by fields and farmland which would be great for walking in dry weather (unfortunately not while we were there!), and it's close to the steam railway and the bobbin mill, which we visited and enjoyed very much. Mark (the property owner) was really friendly, helpful and prompt to resolve the small issues we had during our stay. Our dog loved going for short walks in the grounds of the property, and we were happy to have the farm next door when we needed eggs for breakfast. Other reviews on here mention the uncomfortable sofa and bed but they seemed fine to us. The website says the property is on one floor but it's not it's on two floors, although this wasn't a problem. It was a shame that only four coathangers were provided in the nice big wardrobe (I could have mentioned this to the owner and given him a chance to resolve it but I didn't - my fault). So overall, top marks!

The owner was really helpful, friendly and responsive. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, and had everything we needed. We loved the outside space and took our dogs up round the woodland and into the dog run several times. The area is really quiet and we certainly managed to escape the Bank Holiday crowds, but there were lots of lovely walks from the doorstep. We would agree with previous reviews that the sofa is not very big and not very comfortable, but other than that, it was perfect.

Thank you for your kind review. We are so glad that you and your dogs were able to enjoy the property so much. Property Owner

However, the bed is extremelly uncomfortable (way too hard) and the sofa is also very worn and unconfortable. The sofa has been mentioned in the comments booked quite a bit. If it wasn't for the two small issues the property would be 5*! We cannot fault anything about it other than this.

The location is perfect. Nicely secluded only 5 minutes in the car to Newby Bridge or Ulverston (10 mins). The cottage is beautiful and finished to a high standard. Perfect for dogs too. Some people have commented on the size of the bed. It was fine and we slept well. We could agree with other comments about the size and comfort of the sofa, but in reality it is just not a problem. The kitchen is well equipped and just outside is great seating area. Parking is plenty and easy. So the burning question is would we go back? Well most definitely yes. So thanks to Mark and Louise (I hope I remembered their names correctly) for a fabulous stay and we will be back. One thing that was odd was that on Thursday it was way too hot to go walking - never known that in the Lakes before. All the Best, del & Wendy

  • "Absolutely beautiful and amazingly clean accommodation in a stunning setting."

The stable conversion had been done to an extremely high standard. The bedding and towels were of an exceptional standard. We absolutely loved our stay, we felt covid safe, extremely warm, cozy and it was very peaceful and quiet. The accommodation is upside down living where the bedroom is downstairs and living accommodation upstairs. When we walked in we immediately noticed how clean it was…. BUT unfortunately the only negative was that we found it difficult to get a decent nights sleep for the first few nights as the pillows were far too hard, the bed was too small in addition, the 2 seater sofa just wasn’t big enough which therefore made it uncomfortable for two people to sit on for any length of time. This was such a shame as it truly is a lovely place to stay. We would obviously recommend but suggest you take your own pillows. I am so sorry to leave feedback which is not 100% as with a couple of tweaks the Mews could be 110%!

Extremely clean. Location was superb and with plenty of wonderful walks. Lake windermere 10 minutes away, just perfect. Negative and big for us the bed very uncomfortable and matrass and pillows were too hard and the bed to small. The room certainly big enough for a king sized bed. I was really hot too and a fan would have been nice. The sofa upstairs again too small, again enough space for a higher sofa. Certainly don't want to moan but with this change it would be 10/10 for us. Certainly would go back.

We suggest, too, a visit to the Swan Hotel beside the river at Newby Bridge for some great food and relaxation in the excellent spa facilities, and a romantic journey into the Levens Valley on the vintage steam trains that run on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

Back home, the romantic bedroom is both stylish and comfortable, and convenient, too, with its en-suite bath and power shower room.

Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows.
