We have booked this cottage for the last 2 years, it’s like home from home, everything you need is there, it’s a lovely little cottage, it’s within walking distance of bars, shops, restaurants and some lovely walks, whoever stays in this cottage will have a lovely holiday

  • "This lovely property is quiet, comfortable and convenient."

Unfortunately, the shower needs some attention. This has received a lot of comments over the years (in the visitor book, several people mention it over about 5 years!) There is a ridiculous grab rail which is really in the way for anyone taking a shower. Also, the shower water goes everywhere. The cold tap in the kitchen is very stiff and hard to turn off. Otherwise very positive experience.

  • "Brilliant location and great little cottage."

Had all the kitchen supplies we needed and was a fantastic base from which to explore the area. Lovely little outdoor space to relax in the evenings with a cup of tea. Beautiful views. Thank you so much for a lovely place to stay for a week

  • "The photos are misleading as this cottage is a lot smaller than it appears."

The large windows in the main living area don't open, so there's no ventilation or air flow, making it stuffy and unpleasant in hot weather. It's also dangerous as if there was a fire in the kitchen, there's no way to escape without going through it. The shower overshoots the tiny shower screen, so water sprays over the side and soaks the bathmat and floor. The oversized grab rail also means you can only get under the shower sideways. Water pressure is good, which means lots of water on the floor. Temperature control is variable, so it's just as well it's hard to get under it. The bath wasn't draining, which added to the unpleasantness. The biggest issue that we had, however, was that the kitchen was dirty. Surfaces, dishes, and utensils needed a thorough clean when we arrived and this unfortunately led us to question the cleanliness of the entire place. It was also poorly appointed in the kitchen, making it virtually impossible to actually self cater. There was only one tiny pan that couldn't even poach two eggs at the same time. Overall it was such an unpleasant experience that we abandoned our holiday and left after two days.

This little cottage was perfect for 2 people, everything you needed was provided, located 5min walk into center of Ambleside, cottage was spotless, bed was very comfortable, we will definitely be booking this cottage again

  • "Lovely little cottage, only thing that let it down is the shower which is broken."

Unable to fix it in position so as soon as you turn it on the shower head moves soaking the whole bathroom. Seen in the visitors book that it had been reported before but still hasnt been fixed.

  • "Positives: Good location with parking, very clean and well equipped."

Negatives: old uncomfortable mattresses and pillows, bathroom, no opening windows in living room area so the only way to ventilate was a tiny window over the table or the door.

  • "The kitchen tap needs a new washer."

You have to drag it round by main force to get it to turn off fully. On day 3 the light bulb went on the sitting room wall and I couldn't identify one to replace it. The door code is OK,given the isolated location but it would have taken me only a few moments to try all the combinations and get in. More digits on a future lock? Bath's a bit snug but I'm delighted with what has been packed in, so no worries. Overall a great little place for us two with walks straight up the road onto the fell and a 5 minute walk into the heart of Ambleside. Ideal.

Well equipped. The only problem was the shower where the water sprayed everywhere except over me!! We noticed in the visitors booked that several people have already made comments about the shower dating back to 2016! Otherwise an enjoyable stay.

  • "Little Stone Howe is a good little place, but it could be amazing."

The hard work is already done with the parking space, beautiful decor, lovely outside space. To make it a perfect stay the bed needs renewing as its very uncomfortable and with all the walking a good nights sleep is crucial. The oven is awful it took 1hr 20 to heat up a shepards pie I'd brought with us, it normally takes 45mins. Old wooden cutlery needs updating and saucepans with lids would be great too. The cleaning could definitely be better, dirty kitchen cupboards and loads of old food under the microwave. The washing machine is excellent to have, but no clothes horse to dry clothes, we had to go and buy one!

  • "We had to remove a cushion on settee to retreave a pen and we couldn't believe that the cushions had not been removed for a long time and needed cleaning badly."

When we removed the bedding a the end of our stay the mattress protector was stained in places and also the duvet need washing.

  • "The apartment was lovely, the living area was bright and airy, and comfortable, and the bedroom was comfortable with plenty of storage."

The bathroom was fine - although the accessible railings in the shower do get in the way slightly (but understandable that they're there). The apartment is very close to town, although be warned that it is up a steep hill which might be an issue for people with mobility issues. The kitchen had everything we needed. But bear in mind, that things like tea bags, coffee, shampoo etc. are not provided. And we only received 1 and a bit toilet rolls for the two of us to use for a week! I'd definitely recommend the apartment and would stay again.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
