  • "This was our second stay at Fairy Glen and our week was as magical as the first time."

We were blessed by fine autumnal weather and had a fabulous stay. The house is delightful and well equipped and the location is superb. It was great to be able to return to such a cosy base after a day out walking. We had a wonderful holiday with our children and grandchildren. The little ones loved exploring the garden and thought the 'secret fairyland' in the basement was great fun. We will be back.

  • "Our stay at Fairy Glen was to celebrate a 60th birthday and I have to say the cottage absolutely made the celebrations unforgettable."

We have stayed in many parts of the Lake District over the years and have booked cottages in and around Grasemere but hands down this is the best we have had. From the excellent location, less than 10 mins from the centre of Grasemere, to the fantastic decor and facilities. Great kitchen area for cooking and dining for 10 and with most rooms, which are all beautifully decorated, having on-suites it made the stay perfect. I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage to anyone and will be booking it again for next year. Good food at the swan (4 min walk) and Tweedies bar (10 min walk) also can’t recommend highly enough the Jumble room restaurant with a fabulous Asian fusion menu (booking absolutely necessary). We had two dogs with us and the enclosed garden was perfect. Great base for walks of all levels, go stay and enjoy the lakes!

  • "A beautiful large house, with great views, great amenities, very well positioned in Grasmere, ideal for family gatherings."

We stayed in September '24, the gardens are well maintained, secluded and dog safe. Off-road parking was easy and convenient. The house is beautiful and retains its Victorian features. We found the beds were very comfy. The kitchen is well appointed with a range style oven, a microwave and a slow cooker, plus a second modern oven in rear utility area, a full sized fridge/freezer, washing machine and separate dryer. Ample space for coats and boots. A 2 minute walk down to the village takes you to a well stocked, friendly Co-op store and a range of local independent shops and cafes, while 2 minutes up the road is the The Swan pub. Good local bus route links to surrounding towns inc. Ambleside, Windemere, Keswick. The cellar is beautiful, containing a unique spring water well feature - keys appropriately hung above the door out of reach from children. Lots of useful local information provided in sideboard drawers (local events, attractions, bus timetables), along with Ordnance survey maps, and guides for walks, cycling, motoring, whatever you need. Thank you for a lovely holiday, will come again.

  • "I will start with the positive."

Beautiful home with all the facilities you could need. Close to the centre of Grasmere and the bus network to get you around the lakes. Garden is well maintained and secure for dogs. Negatives. The house sleeps 10 adults yet there is only 9 large dinner plates! The sofas in the lounge are so uncomfortable with the one being held up with wooden planks. This meant we ended up going to bed very early as also the dinning room chairs were the most uncomfortable I have ever sat on. 2 of the en suite showers did not drain so could not be used. I did contact Sykes but had no response. The heating system has a mind of its own. The car park space fits 3 cars at a squeeze. The one bed was like sleeping on a plank of wood. The bath although beautiful cannot be used unless you are a child as there is no headroom to get in and out of it. The oven in the main kitchen cannot be used to its full capacity as half the oven did not work. There was no grill pan and there are missing knobs for all the gas hob. No instructions found so had to Google how to use it. The windows in the loft cannot be opened and when able to they shut on their own. There is a photo of a basement area but the door to this was locked. It is such a shame as the house is stunning and so is grasmere and we all loved our week there. But unfortunately would not book again.

Hi / thanks for your feedback / I feel I should comment so in order / only 9 plates ? I am surprised but getting this checked and sorted / sofas x3 in the lounge, I am surprised you found uncomfortable, the 2x leather sofas we bought new a few years ago, the fabric sofa is older and a leg was broken recently so apologies, it will be replaced shortly / no one has ever complained about the dining room chairs / the showers can I agree drain slower than we would like so apologies / I have checked with Sykes they have no record of you contacting them during your stay, they are normally very good at responding / car parking for 3 cars at a squeeze, no one else has ever complained about the space / one bed like a plank ? the 4x king size mattresses are less than a year old, and the twin beds less than 2 years old, they are medium firm mattresses / the bath in the top bedroom is in the eves yes / the main oven issues, I am getting these checked / hopefully you were able to manage and there is a second electric oven in the back kitchen of course / no instructions / there is a folder in the lounge full of operating manuals for equipment in the house including the ovens / windows in the loft don't open / shut on their own / the dormer windows have a winding mechanism and the small sash window might need propping up ? / unable to access basement ? this hurts me most because it's a beautiful space with the well and the fairy lights / the key to the door should be on a hook just to the left of the door, the key is supposed to be out of young children's grasp as the steps leading down are steep but it sounds like you didn't find the House folder which has all this type of info ? Ultimate, Fairy Glen is an old Victorian House with a lot of character, in a beautiful location, and I can only assure you we do our best to maintain and improve it as we go. • "Beautiful house and very well situated for local amenities, incredible views from the windows and very comfortable."

Well stocked kitchen and washer and dryer were a plus for when it rained. The broken bench was replaced while we were there which good and the gap in the garden was filled with a new bench also. Our dogs are too old to try escaping under a bench but maybe at some point it would be a good idea to fill the gap with a bit of fencing? An enclosed garden is the holy grail of holiday cottages for dog owners....There were 9 of us and plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable. A truly gorgeous house in a stunning setting.

It would be more flexible if at least one of the doubles was able to be a twin. A bbq would be good and better outdoor seating especially in garden Property could do with updating as some seating, furnishings are worn we loved the location and the cottage itself especially proximity to The Swan.

  • "Fairy Glen was a great location for our diverse party which included a young child, adults over 70, and a dog."

The space and facilities were good, the kitchen/dining room lovely, and the beds were comfortable. However, the property felt somewhat neglected, and could do with a fortnight of sensitive maintenance. On the top floor, there was split in the floorboard with a sharp edge and a 3cm gap, poorly installed rooflight handles, blinds with hanging cords which posed a strangulation risk, and lots of dusty cobwebs (even between the bedside lamp and the wall, suggesting not a very thorough cleaning had taken place). There were passive-aggressive signs displayed which suggested that previous shower leaks were due to negligent visitors, whereas in fact the sealant was black with mould, indicating a lack of proper maintenance. The (presumably very absentee) owner also needs to check the wooden window sills as they look like they are about to collapse with rot in places). The garden was not dog-secure as advertised, as there were several places where the fence wire was squashed, and in one part was 'fenced off' with a broken garden bench resting across a gap. The other garden bench has a broken arm/back so had to be used with care. In summary, the house is not worth the current rate in its present condition, but we would stay again if it was half the price.

There is a screw sticking out of the large bench in the front garden. This should be delt with immediately as it could cause injury and damage to clothing.

  • "Fairy Glen is in a great location and has loads of space."

It was helpful having so many bathrooms too. However, many of the reviews before are correct that the property is in need of some TLC (especially when reflecting on price and similar properties). This didn’t impact our stay aside from the heating which is unworkable once on and the lounge becomes like an oven! The gaps in floorboards is odd especially in one of the en-suites where you inevitably drip water on the floor and therefore through the gaps. I get it that the property is old but some flooring would make more sense as noise anywhere in the house reverberates around. As the property is dog friendly, allowing guests to take the back door key out may make more sense as this means a dirty/wet dog can more easily come in this door and stay there until dry.

ii) The window pane in the lounge was cracked and therefore we could not open this to try and cool the room. iii) We had to spend an extortionate amount of time during the week trying to resolve these issues. We were so lucky that the local maintenance team who came to replace the outside garden seat tried their best to also resolve this problem, albeit this took a further couple of days. I am surprised that we were confronted with these issues during our holiday week and really resulted in a less than satisfactory experience. This premium rated property should be maintained at an appropriate level reflecting the rate charged. A coffee maker would be ideal in the kitchen, and a little TLC may be needed to keep property updated. We were there when weather was windy and this caused drafts from bedroom windows on first floor. It a shame there only 1 bath which is in the top bedroom, which has limited headroom, it would be ideal if bathroom on first landing could have a bath in that bathroom so a bath is more accessible. We used the travel cot and the mattress was not ideal, we had to use a quilt to make it more comfortable to use. There was always a nail that came up on the floorboards in the dining room which is not ideal so avoid that as you enter the dining room ! We do love Fairy Glen and would stay here again.

The kitchen was poorly stocked and floor boards meant returning with holes in our socks as they need maintaining. Heating very noisy during the night and none of the remote controls had working batteries. Kitchen needs an extractor fan as fire alarm triggered frequently and exterior bin needs collecting at start of stay as we had to store rubbish bags in the house until collected on Thursday as bin full at start of our week. The property was well equipped, has good appliances, especially the cooker and had really useful utility rooms. Most bedrooms were a decent size and the number of bathrooms was great for our large party. It does need some TLC, specifically, broken pan lids need replacement, windows need cleaning outside, a thorough clean inside would help and I'm glad we found the broken wine glass stem under a chair in the lounge rather than our children. The garden is pleasant and were it not for dog mess left by earlier ignorant guests, would be a good play area for children. We paid a premium price for an Easter week but the property was simply not value for money. With a spot of investment and attention to detail this has the potential to be a fantastic property. At the moment it is some way off, which is surprising for HoTL.

The property

We are sure you will love Fairy Glen - a delightfully spacious and characterful family home in an ideal location on the edge of picturesque Grasmere village.

Built in the mid 19thC the property has been sympathetically updated whilst retaining many original features and is sure to please anyone looking for a larger holiday home for either an extended family or a number of couples wishing to stay together.

There is much to do in the immediate area and no need to use the car on a daily basis with shops and local services just along the road, plenty of eating places and various good pubs close by you will have all your day to day needs on hand.

Walks from the door are too many to mention with both rambles and high level peaks accessible.

Grasmere makes a splendid base for a holiday in any season and is always sought after being right in the heart of the lakes.

Make sure you visit the Wordsworth museum and Dove Cottage and see the local churchyard where Wordsworth is buried.

Rowing boats are available on Grasmere Lake in season - beautiful for a picnic on a sunny day. Accommodation: The house is on three floors.

Front door entrance with room for jackets and boots leads into the welcoming hallway with rooms to either side.

The main sitting room to the left has plenty of comfy seating and an impressive wood burner to keep you cosy on the coldest nights (Flat screen TV and free wi-fi).

To the right of the hallway is the open plan kitchen/dining room with wood burning stove, bay window and TV.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
