  • "This cottage was a little gem, great spot for exploring."

The house was very well equipped everything you needed and spotless. The beds were so comfy. Would definitely recommended and hopefully plan to return. We had the extra luck of seeing the northern lights in the dark skies very special.

  • "We didn't actually stay at the property as it smelled of dog."

We contacted the company who sent a housekeeper out to mop the floor and add an air freshener. Upon our return to the cottage, it still had an odour of dog. This is due to the 'dog house' under the stairs. We contacted the company again and told it was our word against the housekeeper and if we stayed at a dog friendly property this comes with the territory. What a load of rubbish. Very unhelpful staff. After several discussions with the company we were told in no uncertain terms that we would not get any of our money back. Also the photos need updating as the living room does not look like the photos. For the record this property was booked 2 hours prior to us arriving. If they needed an admin fee and to pay the housekeeper for mopping the floor and adding an air freshener, we should have at least received 3 out of 4 days refund. This non-holiday booked in good faith cost £446.00 for 4 nights.

Although this cottage has been in my family for decades I live a few hours drive away rather than locally, so I rely on a housekeeping company to do handovers (they look after over 100 holiday cottages, have a good reputation and know the ropes) and a separate cleaning company to do a monthly deep clean. I arranged within minutes for Lakes Property Services to respond to this issue when Sykes notified me, even though the booking had only been made at 2 hours notice. Lakes Property Services’ feedback to me was that was no odour. I asked Dobsons of Grange, who do the monthly deep clean, whether they had noticed this as an issue and they also said they had never noticed any doggy odour either. In fact I had washed the dog bed covers under the stairs when I had been in the cottage myself recently. Of course I want everyone to be as delighted about the cottage as many of the other guests have clearly been, but this feedback doesn’t ring true to me I’m afraid. Updating the photographs is a fair point however; this would reflect the investment in two smart new sofas, patio furniture, original artwork, an eco friendly heat pump system and general decoration since they were taken ie. what you get is better than illustrated rather than the opposite! • "I have been staying at this property since 2022 numerous times a year either for weekends or a full week."

I have enjoyed two Christmas’s here also, it really is a home from home. I don’t normally leave reviews for anything but reading more recent reviews of Low Dog, I feel compelled to leave a review, as I feel it doesn’t represent it correctly. It’s a fantastic cottage really a home from home. I have witnessed firsthand the investment and cosmetic changes that have been made, not because of poor or inadequate quality but for investment into the property. During this time it’s has had an eco pump installed for the future proof and environmental factors. New smart television, new sofas and garden furniture. It’s comfy cosy and quiet, all the things needed for a relaxing break. It’s pet friendly which is music to all pet owners ears. With stone floors downstairs it’s absolutely ideal, taking away any smelly carpets but also the worry of any accidents spillages or muddy boots. Same with the rear garden all paved for ease no muddy grass. It has all the benefits of dog beds and blankets, bowls etc. And the little cubbyhole for dogs if you wanted to use. With all the will in the world animals animals sleep in here it’s pet friendly what do you expect ??? This cottage has the most wonderful bathroom the shower and bath are heaven!!!!! The bedrooms are comfy and cosy and you couldn’t ask for anymore. I have stayed in a lot of Sykes properties and this is a little gem that keeps pulling me back. From the visits from the cows to watching the heron on the stream, you really wouldn’t regret staying here!!!! More recent reviews are extremely inflammatory and give a false impression of one of the best cottages.

  • "A great location and comfortable cottage."

Our only gripe was that we requested that the twin room be made up into a double, through sykes who said they past this information onto the owner and it never got done. I see another review mentions this point as well, so this has happened before. Some lovely views from the property but the seating area to the rear of the cottage is compact and there is a large and noisy fan for the heating system next to the rear door and seating area.

  • "Lovely well presented cottage."

Such a beautiful area and so much nature around. Especially liked the cows who visited on an evening. Kitchen has lots of equipment and was well stocked. We stayed over the bank holiday when the races were on. It was a 30 minute walk across the field and down to the racecourse which took the hassle out of the day. Would definitely recommend and looking to book again.

  • "I recently had a long weekend at Low Dog Kennel and found the property and location to be wonderful."

It was easy to find and located in a very tranquil setting. Despite this, it was really conveniently located to get around the southern lake district and well placed for sight-seeing. I had the most relaxing, restorative time there and it really did feel like a home from home. The peace and quiet was wonderful. The property is lovely, and decorated to a good standard. I felt the pictures didn't really do justice to how nice it was. The kitchen is fitted with very high quality appliances and there was a lovely welcome pack upon arrival. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower great - good pressure and plenty of hot water. Despite being in a very rural location the wi-fi and TV signal were all fine. It was all very clean when I arrived. There is a lovely small secure yard which is a real sun trap and I spent many happy hours out there with my dog reading and meeting the cows in the next field when they visited. I really enjoyed my time at the property. I would never again rent a property with a 9am check out time - ouch! There were two big drawbacks for me which stopped this being a perfect property. Firstly, dogs aren't allowed upstairs. I completely respect owners putting whatever restrictions they want to on their property's use, but those restrictions should be clearly advertised so you can decide whether or not you're comfortable with them before you let a property. Describing your property as dog-friendly and then not disclosing to holiday makers until they get there and it's too late to do anything about it that dogs aren't allowed in 50% of the house is unfair. The main drawback though was the heating situation. The heating is controlled remotely and is set to come on a times and to a temperature of the owner's choosing. You have no ability to turn it on if you're too cold and off if you're too hot and the only way of communicating with the owner is through Sykes so is only in office hours and Sykes were not quick at picking messages up. Whilst the owner did turn the heating up on a day I was cold when I was there, the next day was blazing sunshine and I had no way of turning it down. The owner's suggestion is that you light the fire if you're cold at times that they have decreed you should be out of the property and therefore the heating doesn't need to be on, but of course this only heats the one room. Want to enjoy a long leisurely bath in that beautiful deep tub in the afternoon? You can - but you'll catch a chill when you get out!!! I'm including that information in this review which I hope Sykes will publish, as again, I feel that this should be honestly disclosed in the listing. Had it been, knowing that I am someone who feels the cold, I would not have rented this property as I would have known that that arrangement would not have worked for me.

  • "Upstairs was terrific, great bathroom, superb bed."

Downstairs sofas dated and uncomfortable and lots of dog hairs under the cushions and on the floor under the sofas. Kitchen dated and freezing cold as no heating. Do not like not being able to control room temperatures. This is controlled by the owner on his mobile app. Freezing cold on arrival as owner had forgotten to switch it on. Lounge very draughty.

Cozy & comfy. Good walks from the door. Well equipped & spacious. We couldn’t clear the fire grate too well as there wasn’t a decent brush. Quiet lanes not much traffic is a bonus & we actually managed to park both a car & van off road without obstruction Thank you PS arriving no earlier than 5pm was a challenge as our elderly parents don’t drive in the dark. I think it’s too late 4pm is better. Also a 10am vacate in day of leaving is fairer (esp on New Years Day!)

  • "Me and my husband took our 2 children away for 3 nights in this cottage for a relax and that’s exactly what we got."

This is such a pretty little cottage with everything you need at hand. There is a cupboard full of board games and playing cards to enjoy. Although it seems in the middle of nowhere, it’s only a 5 minute drive to the local shop and pub and Grange-over-sands is only 10 minutes drive. There is a little garden at the back with a seating area that is so lovely just to sit back and listen to the silence around you only the tweeting of the birds to be heard. Teatime was when we got the visit from the young cows in the field next door who came for a a little noisy at the humans in the house. This holiday was just perfect for us and we will definitely be booking in for next year but for longer next time, it’s a great place for a base to visit the lakes with Keswick and Windermere being only 30 minutes drive away.

  • "This was our third visit & it’s a great base for visiting Cartmel & Windermere, a peaceful location yet a short drive away."

The upstairs rooms are well appointed and comfy, it does say the 2nd bedroom bed can be made into a king size, we requested that in the past but our request was ignored. Now you don’t communicate with the owner so there’s no way to request. The house has everything you need for your holiday & the garden is a lovely little sun trap in the afternoon if you want to eat outside. The entry and exit times are restrictive. They were changed in the pandemic for extra cleaning, but then & now there is no sign of a particularly thorough clean. A 5pm entry time is too late & I felt like we’d lost out. Most places are 3 as this used to be.

  • "Lovely stay at this cottage."

The main bedroom and bathroom are to a very high standard. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Bathroom very modern and clean. Living room furniture is slightly dated but nevertheless comfy. Log/coal burner lovely and warm. Kitchen well laid out with everything you need. 2 small hitches. No kindling to start the fire on our arrival (wet and windy) so had to go out straight away to find a local seller. Milk spill in the bottom of the fridge. Obviously not cleaned and smell was disgusting. Not what you want to do when you first arrive. Otherwise a pleasant stay in peaceful surroundings. Loved watching the cows wander past the back garden.

Not shown in the photos online is a pretty courtyard garden which is a complete sun trap. The cottage suited our toddler very much and it is a comfortable place to stay. We did have an issue with the cleaning as there was a lot of dirt under the sofas and some on the bathroom walls but the rest was spotless. The beds were reasonably comfortable but probably coming towards replacement. However, we like to come back.

We just used as a base, mostly ate out so didnt use any cooking facilities. I found it to be very clean, bed was very comfortable. The only downside was back garden. It was very basic. Whilst I understand that it is a very small space and difficult to do any major changes, it does need updating. The cottage has been some nice finishing touches so feel this should have continued into the garden. It was just a bit meh, it would have been nice to sit out once we had returned to the cottage on the night time.

I emailed to complain within hours of arriving. I was given a special customer reference and allocated one of your colleges, Alistair who was to contact me. I never heard from Alistair even following further emails. I emailed the housekeeping company and they never bothered to reply. It seems when something goes wrong, your company just hoped we will go away. The customer service was appalling. I have photographed all what was wrong with this property and am contacting head office. The kitchen was so bad that we were unable to use the facility's. Your cleaning company you use did not clean, they only made the beds and were gone. During a pandemic this property should have been spotless. The rear courtyard was a mess and not fit safe for children due to the stinging nettles. I will be following this bad experience further. The property needs a deep clean and many items replaced or repaired. We will certainly not be returning and will advise others to stay well clear.
