  • "Really enjoyed staying here."

Everything we needed was in the cottage. The owners were friendly and welcoming. The log burner was an extra cosy comfort. Lovely garden for our dogs. The cottage was situated in the centre of high Bentham, so everything was close to it. Shops, bars, restaurants and takeaways. I didn’t use the car, the whole time I was there. We went for long walks around the river. Such beautiful scenery.

  • "This is a lovely period cottage that shows its age in the best possible way."

It was perfectly clean, warm and welcoming. Bentham is perfectly positioned for the Dales, the coast, the southern Lakes, Forest of Bowland and the Howgills. Cakes, milk and items for the dogs were very thoughtful. It was very dog friendly even to the point of having a pleasant walk right outside the door which made particularly early morning and late night dog walks very easy. We did feel that the kitchen could have been slightly better equipped otherwise it had everything we needed. Our one concern is that the house is on the market and we would have been very upset if we had booked and then not been able to go because it had been sold.

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback Pete pleased you had a good week and liked the cottage and surrounding area, not sure what you thought was missing in the kitchen? The cottage had only been on the market for a few days when you got here so never any reason you wouldn't be able to stay. Kind regards to both Steve and Hazel. Property Owner

We were lucky with the weather, and so was able to have some evening drinks in the garden. We had a lovely Sunday roast in the Coach House pub which is a 5 minute walk away. There are several good walks and points of interest within the local area. The owners left us some lovely treats, and visited us shortly after arrival to make sure we had settled in and had no problems. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Beehive cottage.

This charming stone cottage offered the perfect base for exploring the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales. High Bentham is ideally situated for those eager to walk Three Peaks. Beyond the peaks, we found attractions just a short drive away, including Bolton Abbey and Malham Cove. Over the week, we walked 100 kilometres through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the Dales. Beehive Cottage is a gem. The stone building exudes character, beautifully blending traditional charm with modern comforts. Every detail in the cottage has been thoughtfully designed, making it not only visually appealing but also practical. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you might need for a comfortable and convenient stay. From the cosy living areas to the well-appointed kitchen, every aspect of Beehive Cottage contributed to a truly memorable holiday. If you're looking for a delightful retreat in the Yorkshire Dales, Beehive Cottage in High Bentham is the perfect choice. We left feeling rejuvenated and already planning our next visit!

  • "In a phrase, "A little gem"!"

Having stayed at the property before we, generally, knew what to expect. For anyone who hasn't, we would say that the Beehive is a most comfortable, cosy cottage that simply 'oozes' character and 'history'. Bentham, itself, has plenty of little shops, etc to support your stay. The location is great too - you are conveniently sandwiched between The Dales, The Forest of Bowland and The Lakes. A big thank you, too, to the owners, Hazel and Steve, for our welcome gift and for the quick visit to check that everything was to our satisfaction. Beehive does you great credit!

  • "Beehive Cottage is 'quirky', interesting, homely, cosy and comfortable."

All amenities were in top class condition and worked fine. There was a useful information file and a welcome apple pie and pint of milk! Great hospitality service. The only issue I would raise is the 9am check out time. This means you spend your last evening packing or have to set the alarm early - no one wants to do this on a holiday! 10am is the norm which is more reasonable. It doesn't spoil the cottage though!

Thanks for your great feedback Martin, nice to hear you enjoyed your stay and liked the cottage. We move the check out time during covid as it was taking longer to clean and had our dog to walk in the morning sorry it was a little early for you. Kind regards to both Steve and Hazel. • "Absolutely adore this cottage!"

…it is a proper quirky, characteristic place, great for 2 people and 2 little dogs, the stairs, yes!, the stairs are traditional stone steps, so you have to take extra care, not an issue for us, but may be for the less able, low beams and door ways, you WILL hit your head if you are 6ft!, ( I’m Tiny, I loved the charm of the beams, partner hit his head a few times!), we got lots of use from the log burner as we attended in March, cottage warms up nice and toasty, beds comfy, huge big lounge with comfy sofa, everything was clean and welcoming, a well stocked kitchen, owners called by on the Saturday to say hi, a welcome pack of a lovely cake, milk and treats for the dogs, ( thank you) the area is great for exploring, sadly the pub 1 minute from the cottage has closed down, but there’s others in the village, local spar 2 mins walk, ( great shop) a couple of take aways, chippy etc, so excellent base, the only slight negative I can say is the internet needs up grading as it couldn’t cope with a laptop and phone logged to it, the walls are so thick 4g couldn’t get through them so had to go out side to use phone with data….100% recommend beehive cottage for a break away, would’ve loved to see the history/ story of the building and the renovation that was done, if the owner has these, please pop the story in the welcome pack…special mention to Goat Gap Cafe, best dog friendly cafe we’ve been in!…

  • "We stayed the weekend to celebrate my birthday and the property was lovely, clean and tidy and well equipped, just what we wanted for a weekend away that ticked a few major "must have" boxes namely it was dog friendly, had a real fire (or log burner) and location was near to where we wanted to be for walking the hills in the local area."

The owners were very friendly and kindly called by to check if everything was ok and we were having no problems. The house itself was lovely although as I am 6'2" tall and 18.5 stone I am not a small guy and found the shower a bit small for me personally but the water was a good pressure and hot so others smaller than me will have no issue at all. The biggest negative was vehicular access via the stone arch, I drive a Ford ranger 4x4 which is a long vehicle @ 5.4m (17.6') and the narrow access lane with tight 90 degree turn under the arch was a difficult squeeze requiring some shunting to and fro to line up and get in to the courtyard. Once in it was impossible to turn round and drive back out so the same process but in reverse was necessary to get out again, this meant we were not keen to go out of an evening in the car as it was too much hassle with risk of damage to car and/or wall in doing so especially in the dark. If the house opposite had visitors or closed their gate then it will have been impossible to get in or out with a vehicle of similar size to ours length/width wise. Shame really as we would have come back again but for this problem as the house is lovely and full of old world character with exposed wooden beams and original features i.e. stone flags and staircase. Definitely recommended but more suited for those with a smaller vehicle maybe. The village itself had 3 pubs, a Chinese (which was excellent) and an Indian takeaway and a chippie so no shortage of food options but for some reason none of the pubs were serving food when we went looking at 6pm on a Saturday night but the Chinese is only a couple of hundred yards away and the food was superb with large helpings that lasted for 2 meals which we reheated in the microwave the next day. If we had a smaller car we would definitely stay here again.

Hi Ian it was nice to meet you on Saturday, glad you enjoyed your birthday stay at Beehive cottage. I don't think we've had a vehicle that long here before, had a couple of transit vans and a jaguar ipace that got in and out ok . There's also a free car park a couple mins up the road which usually has loads of spaces . Once again lovely to meet you and If you would like to come back again you would be very welcome. Fantastic water pressure in shower as well. Yes there are low beams and doors in places, but I'm 5ft 11in tall and used to ducking! Lovely garden area too. Our dog was very happy there, and indeed the area and people were very dog-friendly. All very peaceful yet a short walk from shops (Spar and Co-op supermarkets, and a fabulous butcher on Station Road). Excellent Chinese takeaway (closed on Monday, as is Indian and Chippy), but best-ever pub meal at Coach House - an absolutely delicious home-made steak and Unicorn Ale pie with chips & carrots. Great base from which to explore both the Yorkshire Dales and southern Lake District, and the coast around Morecambe. It was so kind of Hazel & Steve, the cottage owners, to pop by during the week to check everything was OK and we really appreciated the milk/cakes/dog treats on our arrival. One thing that could be improved is the lighting in the living room which is quite dark even with all lights on. This made reading difficult. What is probably needed is a more modern floorlamp with a series of spotlights that can be more directed. For example as the HEKTAR 3 spot floor lamp as sold by IKEA.

We had 2 small dogs and the gap in the stairs was i our opinion dangerous, so we blocked it off. The stairs where also a struggle for ourselves. The garden was a disappointment as it was not directly connected to the property.

Peter I'm sorry you had a few issues while staying in our cottage. Regarding parking I know it can be a little tight as you come though the archway but once through there's plenty of room to park,we had a couple with a transit van last week who park ed with no problem . As for the stairs, we put the 3 sets of climbing ropes to aid people to get up and down safely and as it is a listed building we can't spoil the character of the place blocking up very small gaps. The cottage is next to the dedicated parking place and the garden is only a few steps across the parking place all in a continuous flow . Once again I'm sorry you had these problems ,hope you enjoyed your stay never the less. Kind regards Steve and Hazel. S Property Owner

The cottage retains all its old world charms but is equipped to give modern living requirements. As stated this was our second visit, say no more. Two constructive comments ( not criticisms ) . Parking for a large car is a little tight but possible and the garden could do with a little TLC. Over all a very enjoyable stay, if you enjoy old timbers and old world charm definitely try this cottage.

  • "Firstly I cannot fault the cottage itself, it was lovely and had all the equipment etc you could need."

However, the listing fails to mention that the 'dirt' road the cottage is on is very busy with both vehicular traffic and also footfall. There is a constant stream of cars going past the property as well as people and the cottage is very close to the path so this is happening right outside the window which I felt really disrupted your privacy, I did not feel private at all. To make matters worse there is currently a construction site a matter of feet away from the cottage which meant there were things such as tractors transporting building materials like roof supports backwards and forwards again right outside the cottage window, I have pictures of this. This work started at around 7.30 in the morning so I was woken early each day and found it impossible to relax and enjoy the peaceful and stress free holiday I had been so desperately looking forward to due to the continuous noise and the cars which I felt were speeding by the cottage. Unfortunately due to all of these factors I felt I had to leave the cottage early and cut my holiday short and I found it so stressful and noisy, not at all the peaceful retreat I was looking forward to. I have booked quite a few holidays through Sykes and I have never had an issue like this before and never felt the need to cut my holiday short. I would really appreciate a response on this feedback, kind regards, Miss Karen Walker

Welcome hamper much appreciated contained milk, eggs, bread and biscuits and also dog treats for our lab. I was a little worried about reviews stating off road parking is quite small but we managed with a large estate car. I was also worried about the low beams as my husband is quite tall, and yes he did forget to duck occasionally but such a pretty period cottage. Living room a little dark but so cosy with a log burner and inglenook lighting. The rest of the cottage bright and airy and well equipped and the bed was so comfortable. I liked the small gated front courtyard as we could leave the front door open all the time and the dog couldn't get out. He loved the stone floors to keep him cool. Location excellent, in middle of High Bentham which is well served with pubs, cafes and shops and also for local walks from the doorstep. Perfect base for exploring the Dales. The addition of a gated fence around the door makes it safer for dogs. We had good weather which was a bonus so the garden came into use! - typical cottage garden with gravel paths, alliums, lovely peonies and all the usual perennials. High Bentham has 3 pubs with restaurants, 2 minimarkets (Spar and Co-op) various independent shops and eateries plus butchers. So no need to go hungry. There's plenty of area info and reading matter in the cottage The location is handy for visiting other places of interest but lovely to return to at the end of the day. The Horse and Farrier is 5mins from the door and serves tasty food too!
