With easy access to the Ferry for trips across the water for more adventures, we visited Bowness and Windermere by foot and Ambleside by car. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quiet stay in the Lake District as the location itself is secluded from the general tourist areas but is within easy reach if that's what you enjoy.

Needs cleaning! Black mould in the shower cubicle is disgusting. Big cobwebs in the lounge and the lounge floor mat is filthy, I had to move it as I couldn't stand looking at it . The place is also way too hot, we had to have the windows and patio doors open. No instructions for the heating in the cottage and the controls did not respond to my attempts to turn it down.

Facilities excellent, with a quality home from home feel. Comfortable bed, good quality bedding gave us good night’s sleep, vital for anyone. Improved private parking signage required as we came back after a day of sightseeing to find other holiday makers (not from adjoining properties) parking in our allocated space, rather than paying for car parking! Tiles / grouting in shower require attention. Rug in the living area badly stained and smelt. Only minor issues, which would not stop a return visit or recommending the property to others.

  • "Lovely position on the lake."

Quiet when we went but bare in mind the ferry queues outside and the road markings have worn away. Great for short breaks but wouldn't want to stay for a long walking holiday as not much storage for hanging wet coats and boots. Excellent walks from the door. Very spacious and comfortable bedroom on suite. The lounge mat could have done with a good clean as could the oven. Overall very nice but some general updating will be needed soon.

If there were to be improvements REPLACE the bed mattress as it was horrendous to the point I would not stay again. It was like sleeping on an old marshmallow and truly did not support a good nights rest Seating the apartment was just about adequate with only a single two seat settee and the room would benefited from a single seat and foot stool. Hot water / heating failed on the last two days of the stay which resulted in a cold showers. Washing machine rubber seal and the tiles in the shower were showing a considerable amounts of mould which requires an appropriate solution. Summary would I recommend the property NO, would I still use Sykes it is likely Regards Adam

We found the location to be practical, for getting to various places all over The Lakes. The roads were quiet in September and so queues outside for the ferry were very short and not an issue. Tea towels and oven gloves were provided. We also appreciated the welcome hamper, a nice touch. The only issue we came across was the shower would go cold for perhaps fifteen seconds every few minutes - not really a problem as long as you expect it. We would definitely recommend this property for a week or two away.

  • "Wonderful place to stay for a couple and young baby, it had everything we needed and was in a lovely location."

Generally the listing was very accurate, the only thing we hadn't realised was that there were stairs and the bedroom was upstairs. This wasn't a problem for us but we just weren't aware in advance. As far as I can tell from the information and images it wasn't clear that there are stairs. The property was suitable for a young baby but wouldn't be safe for a toddler unless a stair gate was provided. Another slight issue was that we brought our baby bath to use within the shower cubicle (as we knew there wasn't a bath) but the shower was slightly difficult to access due to the way the door opened. Again not a major issue for us as we managed but a more universally accessible shower could be better. Otherwise the accommodation was really lovely and ideal for what we wanted. Loved the local treats and milk provided too.

Right by the ferry and the lakeside. I do Sup so it’s a perfect place to launch. It’s clean and well heated though some might say too hot! Only quibble is that the hot water went off both friday mornings and it was a pain as we had a posh lunch booked so had to have a basin wash both days. It’s really not acceptable to have this 2 weeks running.

The local produce welcome hamper was a delightful touch. Our only criticism would be that there could have been more crockery and cutlery provided as we often had to remove things from the dishwasher and wash them by hand in order to cook/eat our next meal. However, we would certainly wish to return to this property in the future.

  • "We enjoyed our week at Pennington."

The cottage is comfortable and ideal for 2 people. It's on 2 stories and the stairs go straight up into the bedroom (no door), which worried me a bit, imagining getting up in the dark and falling downstairs. It didn't cause any problem though and there are bedside lamps, just that I'm a worrier! We had a nice welcome pack including milk, jam & chutney. The fridge only has a small icebox so don't take frozen food with you! The location was great, literally yards from the ferry over to Bowness which runs every 20 minutes and takes less than 10 minutes to cross, though I expect this could get very busy during peak holiday season. It's £1 for foot passengers & £5 per car, each way. There was a little hut near the ferry where you could get ice cream, coffee etc. The Boathouse, Bowness is good for an informal meal, which is a 10 minute walk when you get off the ferry. Hawkshead is lovely. We visited the grammar school where William Wordsworth went, which was very interesting. You have to phone ahead and book. If you want to visit Hilltop where Beatrix Potter lived, you must book before you go or you won't get in. We didn't plan ahead unfortunately. We loved having a balcony and managed to sit out a couple of times, despite not having the best week for weather. There was a problem with the heating but we were able to operate it manually & it may be fixed now. One morning there was no hot water but it was ok later in the day. We would definitely go back, in fact if it had been available for the following week we would have extended our stay.

The ferry to Bowness being only one minutes walk away was an absolute bonus. The ferries run every 20 minutes, with it costing £1 per person and the journey is less than 10 minutes. The only suggestions we would make would be to have a lighter quilt on the bed and that the balcony be power washed.. The above did not have any adverse effect on our wonderful stay at this cottage.

The cottage was well equipped, clean, bright and comfortable, with a lovely view of the lake. We really enjoyed being able to relax outside on the balcony, only a few metres away from the water, at the end of the day. Initially, we were a little concerned about access to and from the property, as the queue for the ferry passes the front door and the parking bays, but this didn’t prove to be a problem. Out only recommendation to the owners is for a couple of additional sets of crockery and cutlery which would allow for more economical use of the dishwasher. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend.

These have been beautifully designed and although are small have everything two people need. We stayed in November but the house was always warm when we came home due to the great heating. The ferry is extremely handy and again being later in the year was not too busy - however I imagine that in the summer months this may be a little noisier. The little welcome basket was the loveliest touch and we really enjoyed sampling some local goodies and I loved all the information about who our cottage was named after. Finally the view. You really couldn't ask for more and it took my breath away every morning. I would whole heartedly recommend this property and I've never felt so at home in a holiday rental. In fact I want to come back already.
