• "The Gatehouse was perfect for a weekend away with friends."

  The rooms were very spacious and comfortable, which helped with my mobility issues. We had a couple of minor issues but it didn’t affect our stay. The owner, Vicky, was very quick at responding to any messages.

• "Fabulous place, roomy and comfortable."

  We had 8 adults 2 children and 2 dogs. Love the kitchen/diner/living room. Meant the cook never missed out on the chat. Only slight gripe - could have done with a second oven. Great value for money beautiful house and surroundings.

• "Can’t fault my stay at all."

  Wonderful experience and was very well accommodated with all of our requests including for an infant child being met. Stayed for 3 nights to celebrate a birthday with plenty to do in the surrounding area and the property was well maintained to a standard beyond what we expected. If I’m coming back to Kendal, then I’m coming back to the Gatehouse!

• "The house is a really good size and well sound proofed - the early risers could go to the living room without the others in the bedrooms hearing a thing, the size and layout lends itself well to groups/families."

  There was loads of fridge space (2 fridges) and a fab wine fridge too. There was also a Christmas tree which was a nice touch. The owner was helpful in the lead up to the stay and replied quickly when we messaged during too. However unfortunately much of the house is quite tired, needs a refresh and the cleanliness left a lot to be desired, pots/pans etc weren’t clean and carpets and sofa were grubby - when we got the hoover out it barely worked so this is probably contributing to that. Toilets were also dirty on arrival - one of them quite badly. The bedroom on the far left as you look at them smells of damp - as though there’s either an existing leak or an old one that hasn’t been repaired, really off putting to spend nights in there, especially with our baby. The en-suite in that room is also very cold, smelly and the towel rail doesn’t work in it. The heating in the house is on a setting which isn’t controllable from within the house (the owner controls the heating externally) and so even though you’re able to message to have the heating altered, you can’t control this from within - the living room was always roasting even when the setting was lowered by the owner, but we didn’t want the bedrooms to get any cooler so therefore didn’t ask for the living room to be turned any lower. It is also all underfloor heating, which sounds nice but in winter when heating needs to be on meant our dogs couldn’t settle as they were too hot and laying the baby down on a blanket wasn’t doable as she was also getting too warm. Although the owner was always helpful and turned the heating down as soon as we asked, it is a nuisance to have to message to control your own heating and we did have to have windows in the living room open constantly to cool it down, in order to have the heating on in the rest of the house. We had a nice stay and it was nice to walk up to the hotel for a drink in the bar, but really having a more comfortable, clean house and control over temperature ourselves would have been appreciated. If the property was clean and a bit more well maintained then value for money would be fantastic, but unfortunately all of us felt we’d rather have paid more to feel like the place had been adequately cleaned at the very least.

  It is disappointing to read your review and I am sorry to hear that the property was not cleaned to the standard it should have been. Following receipt of your review I reached out to the cleaning team at Lakelovers (who manage the cleaning for myself); they confirmed that the property was not cleaned to the standard they expect by their cleaners and this has since been rectified. I can only apologise as I was not aware myself this had happened until you left this review. I have had no other reports of the damp in the en-suite but I will investigate this. Opening the windows in the lounge wouldn’t have affected the other heating zones as each room is individually thermostatically controlled, unfortunately all this will have done is made the heating come on for longer in the lounge and made it hotter. Changing the heating setting in this room would also not have made any difference to the temperature in the other rooms for the same reason i.e. turning it down would not have made the bedrooms cooler. I would have been happy to explain/alter things had you messaged again. The heating is done in this way due to the complexity of 8 different thermostats and the fact it would never be set right for everyone if guests changed the settings for each zone every time they came. • "We had a great stay!"

  Lovely property in a beautiful location. Kitchen was well equipped and although we didn't use it, the utility would be great for longer stays. The communication from the owner was fantastic! Always a reply within a short time of initial contact. The bedrooms were lovely, especially the 2 larger en-suite rooms. The bathroom was very spacious with a large walk in shower and a lovely deep bath. Smart tv, WiFi and plenty of board games provided.

• "Had a lovely few days at the Gatehouse."

  As some of our party have mobility issues, we were more than pleased with the space to move around easily. We had several meals at the Villa hotel and the 10% discount on food was a bonus. The only one small down point, (we’re of a certain age 70s+ ) the bedrooms were a little cold. We will definitely returning in May.

• "The property was ideal for our family short break as everything was on one level and it was in a convenient location for exploring the South Lakes."

  It’s a spacious property in a quiet location surrounded by lovely countryside. The beds were really comfortable and the house is very well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. • "We had an amazing time at the Gatehouse as a university friends reunion with our children."

  The accommodation was immaculate! Very clean and airy. It was surprisingly warm as well all over the house, sometimes you think places like these might be cold but it was lovely and cozy. So much attention to detail for our stay and catered to families, like having loads of egg cups for the little ones, soap and towels in every bathroom, kitchen towels and soap, so we didn’t have to think about bringing those extra bits. The layout of the house is perfect for large groups. The owner was great reaching out to us before and during our stay to make sure everything was alright. Thank you so much! We will be back and our friends have also mentioned having gatherings there with their own families! Thank you

• "This property is lovely and just off the M6 which was perfect for us as we were going to Scotland and just wanted a couple of nights stop over."

  There is so much to do nearby that you could easily spend a week or more exploring. It is very close to a country hotel so if you wanted a meal out it’s ideal. The house itself is beautiful and secluded and has everything you need. I fully recommend it.

• "We arrived at the Gatehouse and were all extremely pleased with the standard of the accommodation."

  Our group consisted of 4 adults, 2 teenagers and 3 children under 10 years old . The fields around the house were full of dear , this was a delight for the children. We spotted them each of the 4 full days we were at the gatehouse. The location provided peace and quiet with walks in the countryside plentiful. It did rain during our stay but this did not spoil our short holiday. We were so happy with the time we all had at the Gatehouse we have booked again to go back next year for 7 nights.

• "Ideal property for a family get together, (we had three couples and four young children)."

  The kitchen is large and well equipped (even had wine fridge) the chef we employed for our celebration meal was very pleased with it. The space between the bedrooms and the social areas meant that the children weren’t disturbed by the adults during the evening. The living room and bedrooms are all comfortable and pleasantly furnished. Excellent showers/en-suite/bathroom facilities too. The building is centrally heated and has a wood burning stove (wood provided) we found it a little too warm at times with confusing temperature controls. The Gatehouse is in a quiet location but only a few minutes drive from the M6. Kendal is 10 minutes away and Windermere 20 minutes away. The only problems that we encountered was a complete lack of side plates and any oven dishes for baking in, a lack of space for rubbish and recycling, a leak in the bathroom radiator and the lingering smell of smoking in the entrance porch where previous occupants have unfortunately smoked.
