  • "Lovely cottage in a friendly village."

Central for exploring this beautiful area. Comfy, well equipped and nicely decorated and furnished. Safe enclosed garden for the dog and a riverside walk from the doorstep. Shame there wasn't a welcome pack, not even a pint of milk, just a couple of teabag and coffee sachets. ( maybe I've been lucky in previous cottages with lots of treats for me and the dog! ) Sadly, my stay was spoilt due to the noise from the renovations at the cottage next door. I know this is out of the owner's control, and it was only a couple of days and one evening until 8pm but it wasn't the relaxing holiday I was hoping for. Note to Skyes (as this is not the first time) please say on the description if dogs are not allowed upstairs. I wouldn't have booked if I'd known. I'm also reluctant to book anymore attached properties as this is also not the first time this has happened to me! I had a lovely holiday though as the area is stunning and the cottage is lovely.

It felt like home as soon as we walked in to the cottage. It was clean, cosy, modern yet characteristic. The location was great with lots to do nearby. The only thing we would have liked is antibacterial handsoap in the bathroom and kitchen, and maybe some cooking oil in the kitchen as we found the pans weren't nonstick. Sykes Cottages made this booking easy and I think it was great value for money. We can't wait to go back to 5 Bank Cottage!!!

I would of preferred a washing machine rather than a dish washer but that is just my opinion. Lovely places to visit, pubs very friendly and all we went in a dog friendly as well. Did some good walks with spectacular scenery and would recommend the 5 mile walk at Clapham also the 2 mile walk at Stainforth.

The garden is great as it is enclosed so we didn't need to worry about the dog wandering off. Bed and sofa are comfortable. Bathroom is modern and shower is a good temperature and pressure. Kitchen extremely well equipped and includes lots of thoughtful extras (which I had entirely forgot to pack) eg cling film, sandwich bags, tin foil and ice packs so we could take a packed lunch everyday. We didn't use the dishwasher as was only two of us and seemed easier to wash up, but microwave and oven are easy to use. There was also dog bowls and poo bags, again a lovely touch, but had packed my own. We did struggle to park on the first day but that's just one of those things. Location was pretty good, short walk or super quick drive to High Bentham for all amenities. Spoke to one of the neighbours one day, and he was extremely pleasant and helpful.

No problems with directions/parking/key safe. The cottage is beautifully maintained with everything you need for a week away. The garden is great for dogs & sitting out in the sunshine. The cottage is small, but perfect...with comfortable furniture & beds. My one tip would be for doggy owners to take a piece of folding trellis to go at the bottom of the stairs. Perfect to stop curious 4 legged visitors from getting to the bedrooms. Thank you for a wonderful week & we look forward to returning.

Just a shame that both pubs within a short walking distance were closed. One was closed completley (Punch Bowl) and The Sun Dial didnt open until Thursday. Not the cottage owners fault but made it a difficult stay food wise as we dont often cook while away. A mop for the kitchen and brush to sweep the garden would have been useful.

The cottage has been refurbished to a very high standard, yet retains its cosy feel. The kitchen is small but very well-equipped and offered the opportunity to cook a decent roast dinner and enjoy it around the small dining table with a view out to the beautiful and very well-kept garden. The living room can easily accommodate 3 people and the log burner created a lovely cosy and relaxing feel too. The smart TV offers lots of viewing options and the broadband speed was very good - so easy to stay connected when necessary. The views over the rooftops across to the distance hills were lovely and all in all it felt a very calm and relaxing setting. The village of Low Bentham is lovely and has some easy, but enjoyable walks around it. High Bentham is larger and has lots of shops and even a bank, so no need to keep popping to Ingleton for supplies. The village pub is at the bottom of the hill from the cottage and had a nice atmosphere and a good selection of drinks. Other guests said the food was good, but I can't agree/disagree - didn't eat there. Getting around is easy and there are plenty of places to visit nearby (Clapham, Austwick, Malham, Ingleton, White Scar Caves, Ribblehead), so it's a good base for a touring break. The only minor issue was a lack of parking outside the cottage - the only options were on street or in the village public car park (approx 100 yards away), but once we got used to it it really was a very minor issue. A return visit is definitely on the cards!! Highly recommended.

The only downside being lack of parking facilities, being on a very narrow and busy road or car park over 100yds away. Low Bentham lacked facilities except for 2 pubs which didn’t open until 4pm. Unfortunately most of the walks involved crossing a stone stile which was prohibiting for our dogs and therefore unavailable to us. Generally I would say if you are only interested in walking and have small dogs or ones that can climb stiles this area would suit you perfectly.

About the location

BENTHAM, YORKSHIRE

Ingleton 3.5 miles; Kirkby Lonsdale 8.4 miles; Morecambe 16.8 miles

Positioned just west of the Yorkshire Dales, on the northern fringes of the Forest of Bowland, this lovely town is split into High Bentham and Low Bentham, with the babbling River Wenning running between the two. The town boasts an annual agricultural show, with handicraft, horticulture and livestock competitions, which dates back to the 19th century. In addition to this is the annual Carnival and funfair, entertaining a thriving community with workshops, music and many fundraising events. High Bentham has an array of public houses and eateries to choose from, and the railway station sits on the Leeds to Morecambe line. For walking enthusiasts, there are colour coded circular trails of different lengths and capabilities, right on the doorstep. The neighbouring village of Ingleton offers some wonderful caves and tumbling waterwalls, along with a year-round climbing wall and a good range of shops, pubs and places to eat. Enjoy a trip out to Morecambe Bay with your bucket and spade, where you can fly your kites, build sandcastles or simply take a stroll along the promenade. For more independent shops and restaurants, the town of Kirkby-Lonsdale is only a short drive away, with access to Ruskin's View. Take the footpath from the churchyard at St. Mary's Church and follow the trail high about the River Lune, where you can marvel at a panorama of the Lune Valley and Underley Hall.
