  • "We thouroughly enjoyed our stay and are hopefully going to come back next year , only issue we had is the showers are rather poor especially if you have long hair to wash , the last shower i had the water just wouldn’t get warm never mind hot so i had to try and wash the shampoo out of my hair with my head under the shower upside down but keep my body out of the water as it was freezing then just have a quick wash with sponge with the bathroom tap as it came out hot there ."

like i said it hasn’t put us off from returning and we will be hopefully coming back next year as the place is amazing and beautiful

I’ve had a plumber come as I did not realise that shower was a problem. He said the filter was blocked and it is now functioning perfectly. Thank you very much for your feedback. As a footnote, we are moving in to Raisthwaite in September 2025 so it will no longer be available. Thank you Property Owner

The garden is beautiful with plenty of seats, hanging chairs, big dining table and a hammock. We spent a lot of time outside listening to cuckoo’s and sheep and the sound of the stream. We walked the dogs down the stream every evening and we saw some deer! The house is lovely too, kitchen had everything we needed, big dining room with a lovely fire place, 2 comfortable lounges. The bedrooms upstairs were really nice. Wi-Fi was ok, bit slow when everyone was on it, but it was fine. The house was nice and clean. It’s very close to Coniston and we found plenty of nice eatery’s nearby. 1 week was not long enough and none of us wanted to leave! Thank you, we hope to stay again in the future!

Fabulous, thank you very much. We hope you’ll come and enjoy Raisthwaite again. Property Owner

Sheep and lambs everywhere, lovely gardens with its own beck running past the end, miles from the real world, walks straight from the farm up into the hills and all the facilities you would need. Would highly recommend the farm and would happily return there in future. One thing to note for future visitors, I advise taking some provisions/shopping with you as is a 25 minute drive just to nearest supermarket in Millom or Ulverston. Only 45 minutes to Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside, Tarn hows and Coniston closer still. Wildlife park 25 minutes away was well worth the visit too, check online for ticket offers as we got great value on the ticket offers. 10 of us entry for around £65, a steal nowadays. Overall we had a fantastic stay for the week and topped off by getting lucky with amazing one off appearance of the northern lights. Couldn’t recommend any more highly. *****

  • "Absolutely wonderful location, far from noisy roads or busy towns."

Lovely spacious house and large garden. We spent hours just watching all the birds enjoying the bird feeders in the garden, and my son is convinced he saw an osprey take off nearby early one morning. Despite the gorgeous location, it’s close enough to Coniston Water, Gryzedale and towns like Ulverston that (as long as you have a vehicle) it’s easy to find things to do. We also found some enjoyable walks right from the front door of the house (I’d recommend an OS Wayfarer map, though, because they’re not necessarily well signed). You should assume you won’t have phone signal or internet at the house, although you may be lucky depending on your network. Although generally clean and in good condition, the house looked like it was ready for a good going over, with there being dust and used tissues under the loft room bed. There were some random food items presumably left by other guests gently decaying in a kitchen cupboard. Some of the TV remotes needed fresh batteries. Most of the beds were comfortable, but a couple of the mattresses weren’t so good. All sheets and towels were fresh and clean. The shower drain pipe seemed slightly blocked, so when the shower was in use there was some overflowing going on behind the swing chair outside on the patio. Watch out for the towel rail in the first floor bathroom, which gets seriously hot! The shower itself was good once the right setting was found, and a great relief after a particularly wet and windy hike over the Old Man. We had a really great time at the property and exploring the area, and would definitely recommend it.

It really was a lovely touch which the whole family appreciated. The property is ample big enough for 10 people. Fully equipped kitchen with absolutely everything you could ever need. All towels and linen provided. Beautiful big fireplace in three of the rooms which once get going throw out a lovely amount of heat. We did have to take a trip to a garage to stock up on logs and all 12 bags were used up in 2 days! There was ample room for family time and also plenty of space should people wish to have some quiet time. Our little one described it as "the best house ever" for playing hide and seek. The patio area is lovely for enjoying some chill time in the sun. The washer, drier and clothes line were also a great addition which meant we werent returning home with several bags of washing to wade through. We met and spoke to the owners who were very friendly and polite, our little one loved seeing the sheep being moved as they came past the house. The house is in a good location to the attractions we had booked to visit whilst also being far enough away from built up areas that it is so peaceful, whether you stood in the garden during the day or night all you could hear was the little stream that runs along the bottom of the garden and the birds/animals in the fields next to the property. • "This is our second visit to this beautiful house."

We are a family of 4 generations from ages 3 to 74. It was a lovely surprise to be greeted with a fully set table with serviettes, crackers, wine and biscuits (as it was near Christmas time). The garden has been done out since we visited a year ago and includes lovely garden furniture which would be nice in summer. The wifi also seems better than it was previously- still not great, but enough to be able to make online reservations for things and check emails etc. The beds are all very comfortable and the kitchen was well kitted out with many cleaning products for washing up, wiping down and even had extras like tin foil, bin bags, dishwasher tablets, lots of clean tea towels etc. The cleanliness is reasonably good. All the 'vital areas' are very clean such as kitchen worktops, fridge, bathrooms, bedding and towels but when the kids threw a teddy on top of one of the bedroom wardrobes - it was unfortunately filthy, as was behind the bed in one of the rooms (only needed to pull out 1 bed so dont know about the others). The beams in the top bedroom, over the sink area has quite bad cobwebs. And I am very particular about cleanliness, however I do not think that a few missed areas on such a huge house, is the end of the world as overall the cleanliness was good - especially where it really mattered. But from time to time, a deeper clean on less used areas would be beneficial. Instructions for the oven and hob would be helpful as the dials are now blank due to age and repeated cleaning. Our main issue was that we were cold a lot of the time! Even when the heating was on - I do not think the thermostat is set high enough for the freezing cold wether we were having. We kept pressing the 'boost' button to stop the heating going off, but that doesnt increase the temperature. We spent over £100 on firewood for the open fires to keep warm. The radiator in the main entrance hall wasnt working at all and we did try to contact the owner once when we had a power cut but they never got back to us (we managed to self solve the power cut eventually). You are provided with a basket of firewood in the 3 rooms that have opens fires / woodburners and it is really nice and cosy to have a fire on the go during a cold, dark winter nights. The decor is very dated - but it is intentionally kept 'traditional' as that is part of its appeal and is clearly seen in the photos. It's like going back to another time and era and we all love this about the house. The main bathroom and top floor suite are very fresh and modern though and we liked this too. Although I have listed a few gripes - that is only for the purpose of constructive feedback. Overall it is a fabulous holiday home, surrounded by stunning, peaceful scenery. We all slept well and enjoyed meals around the large family dining table, enjoyed relaxing on an evening in front of the open fire, benefitted from having 3 bathrooms between us all, made use of the washer and dryer, had plenty of cups/cutlery/crockery for meals and snacks, kids loved playing hide and seek in such a huge house - just over all, fabulous family time together. We definitely hope to return again.

We had no concerns regarding cleanliness, everything was well provided with cleaning materials on hand if needed. There are clear instructions about all aspects of the property. We had a power cut, on the last night as did many houses across the country due to storm Arwen and the emergency torch in the kitchen was a great help. Although we had no power in the morning there was a portable gas camping stove for boiling water etc. WIFI is available but can be slow particularly if a number of people are trying to use it at the same time. This makes it a good opportunity for people to talk to each other!! Would we use this house again? Definitely

  • "We felt we needed to wipe down all kitchen surfaces and both kitchen and dining room tables, which were oilcloth covered and somewhat sticky, with anti bacterial wipes prior to using them."

The property is listed for 10 people yet the kitchen cannot seat that many. We did not think that the house was particularly well cleaned prior to our occupancy and there was no means available to clean the quarry tiled kitchen floor. The decoration was really old fashioned and the attic room was something to behold. However if you put all that aside it was comfortable enough although it really was miles from anywhere. There was little to no wifi and extremely poor telephone signal but this was known upfront and was no surprise. The worst thing was the urine stained mattress which we found when the bed in the attic room was stripped on departure as requested. This was disgraceful and disgusting particularly in these days of covid and we had unknowingly sleptbon it for a week. The owners knew about this as when we brought it up through the agents after departure they said that they could not afford to change mattresses out when this happened. Not a good reply or reason. Perhaps they should use waterproof covers. Not good.

I do pride myself on keeping to an extremely high standard of cleanliness in Raisthwaite. At each changeover, three adults work for five hours, and Raisthwaite has achieved an over 95% cleanliness rating regularly in the past 4 years. All work surfaces the the kitchen and dining room and throughout Raisthwaite, are cleaned with anti-bacterial spray. It is possible this does leave a sticky residue on them. All cleaning products are also left in the property for guest to use throughout their stay, including extra hand sanitizer, hand wash and vinyl gloves for Covid safety measures. The oilcloths are on the tables for visitor convenience and cotton tablecloths and table mats are available on the Welsh dresser for guests to use if they prefer. Very few guests do, as the oilcloths are so practical. Raisthwaite has a dining room table which seats 10 and a kitchen which seats 8 plus an easy chair. However, I do acknowledge there is no old fashioned mop and bucket available as I find them unhygienic, smelly and breed germs unless used and cleaned very carefully. We provide a broom with wipe attachments for guests to clean the quarry tiles as they choose, as necessary, whilst staying at Raisthwaite. We use floor disinfectant weekly at changeover days. Obviously, Raisthwaite is a traditional Lake District farmhouse, as beautifully illustrated in the photographs by Lakelovers. The style and quality of the fixtures and fittings are clearly shown with Ercol furniture and leather suites throughout. The attic renovation, with open plan en-suite and super king bed has been a guest favourite for the past four years, with a beautiful slipper bath as a centre piece. It is a secluded woodland Lake District valley, surrounded by traditional fells, streams and ancient trees. It is a very beautiful, tranquil retreat. Unfortunately, the stain on the mattress in the attic had been only partially dealt with as deep professional cleaning requires the bed to be dried for several days after treatment. I had spot cleaned the stain with antibacterial cleaner, and obviously, used mattress protectors as standard on all beds throughout. The mattress has now been professionally cleaned. All mattress and pillow protectors are changed at every changeover, guests may have accidents whilst staying at Raisthwaite and it is my priority to ensure an extremely high standard of hygiene, cleanliness and care is achieved for every guest. Waterproof covers would most certainly not be a comfortable, practical solution as they are non-breathable and cannot be washed at 60 degrees. Of course, guests may choose to bring their own if they wish. Likewise, breakages, such as a lampshade broken do happen, as occurred with these last guests, along with a missing towel. I expect such incidents and am happy to report that almost all guests contact me if they have any concerns, queries or need advice. It is a working farm and my husband and I are regularly at Raisthwaite, and are very pleased to talk to the guests, if the wish. Feedback is extremely important to us so we can continue to strive for the very best guest experience we can achieve. Property Owner

About the location

BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS

Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.

Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.
