The owners, are seasoned hosts, and have considered everything to make you feel welcomed and for you to have a comfortable stay. They were on hand, but we didn’t really need them as the cottage was so well thought out. We ventured out to various locations, Grizedale Forest, Force Falls, Coniston, Windermere, Hill Top (Beatrix Potters House) - all within 15 mins drive. We also headed further afield to Buttermere Lake along the epic Honister Pass (well worth the hours drive)! We left The Shippen feeling refreshed after 7 days and only wished we had booked for longer!

  • "Beautiful location and very comfortable cottage ."

Well stocked . It is very remote and roads were very flooded . This could have been a big problem but we managed but had to drive through many flooded roads . You need a good car or 4 wheeled drive in the winter or you could ruin your car and be stranded . Really enjoyed our stay at the Shippen, it was a total rest away from everything.

Rusland is a quiet, precious location. Many of the visitors to the Shippen return because of the beauty of the valley. However, the implications of staying in a rural area have always to be borne in mind. The weather in December was unusually severe in the South Lakes, as it is sometimes in many other parts of the country. Many long term, local residents do not find it necessary to own four wheel drive or other specialist vehicles. Kind regards Property Owner

We stayed for a week in August 2020 - a much needed break from all things covid! From welcome (homemade scones) to goodbye (sending on a necklace we'd left) Graham and Gay were perfect hosts. Always on hand with some local knowledge to improve your experience of the area. If you enjoy walking, cycling and all the Lakes has to offer the location is awesome. We spent the week walking the valley, playing golf at Winderemere GC and mountain biking in Grizedale forest. Graham was happy for us to store our bikes and golf clubs in their garage and was there with some much needed pliers for a quick bike repair. The accomadation is perfect for two. We had our 10 year old labrador with us too - who loved it! The cooking facilities are perfect, we made a home cooked meal every night we stayed. You will not want to leave the bed behind, it is that comfortable! When first arriving it is tricky to find, I wouldn't fancy doing it in the dark. Once you get your bearings it is easy to navigate the roads and Ulverston is not far away with a good size Aldi. We will book the Shippen again.

  • "Although only at the cottage for 2 nights we thought it was a lovely, well kept base to stay."

Comfortable bed and tasteful decor added to quality towels and crockery was a highlight. The owners were really pleasant and left us some homemade scones, butter and jam. The location is quite isolated with no shops nearby or even local pub so guests do need to be equipped or prepared to travel. The winding roads also make it awkward to find, particularly at night. We will definitely stay there again.
