  • "Generally, the house was lovely, very comfortable, warm, clean and well decorated."

The kitchen was very well equipped. The views are absolutely stunning and the house is very well located for some lovely walks. The house is quite tricky to find down narrow lanes, but very detailed and helpful instructions were sent by the owner which was much appreciated. Parking is tight for three cars as there are gates and pathways that need to be kept free. The house is advertised as pet friendly but there are a number of restrictions on where pets can go and sleep which made it difficult. Other than that it's a great place to stay.

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased that you found the property to be clean and comfy. We do take all comments and suggestions on board. Thank you The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

Owner provided one for us. Otherwise kitchen equipment was fully provided - [ ] No tea towels - [ ] Some soap powder would be helpful - or the spec should advise to bring some - [ ] Eco-friendly dishwasher tablets etc - [ ] No cushions for the garden chairs - [ ] It would have been nice to light the stove in the snug on colder days but there was no cut wood

The views from the house are beautiful with plenty of wild birds to listen to in this quiet secluded space. The Wilsons Arms is a short walk from the property and is highly recommended for food and drink. There are plenty of walks that can be done directly from the house. We had a fantastic stay and would recommend this property!

  • "We enjoyed our stay, the house is spacious, warm and very well-equipped."

The beds are really comfortable, the house is generally clean apart from a thick layer of dust on top of the curtains on the main landing. The views are lovely and it is very peaceful. Excellent pub, the Wilson’s Arms, within walking distance. However, it’s an old house and is looking in need of attention in places. There is too much clutter in cupboards, consequently not a lot of storage for own food in kitchen. Some of the wardrobes had so much spare bedding, it was difficult to hang clothes. The annexe in particular suffered from the following problems: very little storage space and what little hanging space there was, made difficult by surplus bedding. In the shower room there’s an extremely noisy fan which needs replacing and the light pull above the washbasin is broken. The glass shelf over the basin makes the basin almost impossible to use. You need to pay attention when using the toilet, the room is so tiny you risk burning your leg on the radiator. There are missing curtain hooks in this bedroom and in the dining room. Three of the bedrooms were equipped with emergency torches but only one of them worked. It would have been useful to have had spare bin liners and a hand towel in the kitchen. It’s worth noting that the lane to the house was being used by a large tractor which in places had churned up the track making it very muddy by the entrance gate.

Thank you for your feedback - we do rely on guests to help us keep up with what needs repairing - when it's your own house sometimes we don't notice! Now there are rechargeable torches in addition to those with standard batteries. The small shower-room is limited by having 18" thick walls externally and we have had to decide to put a standard sized wc in (2 years ago it was all redone), instead of a smaller wc. Hence the closeness of the radiator. The fan is noisy because it has to be at a 15' angle in the wall unfortunately. The light pull is now fixed. The beds and lounge sofas were all expensively replaced two years ago with highest quality replacements. Many of the solid wood furniture pieces are antiques, and all the artwork on the walls throughout the house are originals. The house was built on the fell around 1850. Sadly the forest behind the property has suffered greatly from storms and larch disease and is being felled by order - the equipment to do this has damaged the roadway which is still ongoing. Thank you for your useful comments and we hope you will come again for another stay. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful week in High Torver House."

The house itself is in a beautiful location with stunning views. The beds were comfortable and everyone loved the massive bath in the main bathroom. The kitchen had everything you need in it except oven gloves which was a bit of a nuisance. When we arrived two of the radiators weren’t working so the smaller bedroom and the lounge were quite cold. We managed to get the radiator in the bedroom working and we lit a fire for the lounge to keep that warm. It was lovely and cosy in the evenings. There are lovely places to eat locally. There is a nice walk down to the Wilson Arms in Torver from the house. The food was delicious there. We would recommend a stay in this house and would love to come again.

Thank you so much for your helpful comments. We found that the radiator valve in the lounge was stuck so we have replaced it with a new one. The bedroom radiator you fixed well - Thank you! Would love to have you back. Property Owner

  • "Lovely house and fantastic location."

Very comfortable, though following the 'refurbished' description on the Sykes site, we were a little surprised that some of the lounge furniture was a little tired. The damp patches on the lounge walls are due to rainwater ingress. Also back door sticks a lot and water does not drain from the main bath. Access up the track was challenging but could be easier if whoever strims the brambles could do this more often and the edges of the track repaired. Parking and turning for two cars would be facilitated if the tarmac area could be longer and wider, accepting the limitations imposed by the hillside.

  • "Great holiday!"

Loved the views, the house was super comfy and met all our needs. The garden was lovely, the dogs loved it! and a well equipped kitchen. Only two things, not a complaint though. The en suite is rather compact, but totally adequate. And I suspect as comes with a house of its age, some damp patches. However they did not detract from our enjoyment of the home and holiday!

Thank you for your feedback. The redecorating of the damp patches is happening soon. You are right though, these old houses have a habit… Property Owner

However, we were with our two granddaughters, this time we came with three teenage boys who were well-behaved but found the isolation of Torver boring preferring to be in Coniston village nearer to the water to use the paddleboats. This didn’t stop us from enjoying our holiday, but we would not book this particular property for our grandsons but secondly to come as a couple or with our granddaughters.

So glad you had a lovely holiday. Sorry about the teenage boys. Mountain climbing next time maybe?? The slopes above the house leading to The Old Man and Dow Crag are unsurpassed. Property Owner

The location is fantastic, with good access to the surrounding area. A very short walk out the front of the house takes you to a pub. A home from home and we felt really relaxed the entire week. Lovely and clean too. We cook all our own food so more empty cupboard space in the kitchen would have been useful and it was very hot at night with the radiators on (in mid-May?) and no way to turn them down that we could see. The property

A wonderful, detached property, standing in it own grounds, backed by the Coniston Ranges, in the hamlet of Torver near Coniston, is High Torver House.

This extensive whitewashed property, perched on the fell slopes, has a woodland forest backdrop and commanding views across the village and valley beyond, offering a peaceful and beautiful Lake District retreat for a large family or group.

Entering the property through the back door, you will find a cloakroom, ideal for removing coats and boots before entering the country-style, well-equipped kitchen, filled with useful appliances and amenities for all of your culinary requirements, including a fridge with ice box, oven and a dishwasher, while the utility room has further handy appliances, including a freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer, for added convenience.

From here, you can access the snug, a wonderful bolthole for relaxing together in front of the woodburning stove, with a patio door that opens up onto a terrace with outdoor furniture, where you can admire your valley views.

From the snug, the staircase takes you up to a king-size double bedroom complete with en-suite shower room, making this part of the house a standalone annexe if needed.

Back downstairs towards the main living areas of the house, a period Minton-tiled hallway leads to the spacious dining room, which comfortably seats eight, and the sitting room with ample seating for all, along with a woodburning stove, TV and more incredible valley views.

Head up the main staircase, where you'll find a pretty window seat, enjoying the wonderful surrounding views, up to the first floor, where you'll find a further three bedrooms; two king-size and a super-king-size with zip/link feature, which can be made into a twin, all of which have exposed wooden floors, tasteful décor and ample storage for your belongings.

The large family bathroom has a stunning free-standing bath, resting beneath an incredible stained glass window and a separate walk-in shower, so you can choose how to prepare for each day.

Outside there is parking for three cars, a barn with bike storage and an enclosed area for pets, an enclosed lawn with a monkey-puzzle tree and an extensive patio with outdoor furniture, ideal for an alfresco lunch, admiring the valley views in front of you, while the surrounding woodland and fields in front are owned by the property owner.

Torver is an undiscovered gem, home to two wonderful local pubs, as well as the nearby Crake & Woodland Valleys, Torver Common and Beacon Tarn, all tranquil spots well worth exploring.

Unsurprisingly, this area is very popular with walkers and cyclists of all abilities who enjoy escaping the central Lakes crowds.

Just a 20-minute walk to the shores of Coniston Water, ideal for fell walking and offering some of the best mountain biking around, while no trip to Coniston would be complete without a climb up The Old Man of Coniston.

You can also access a host of amenities in Coniston village, a pleasant 3-mile stroll along the old railway line footpath, as well as the Ruskin Museum.

Grizedale is a short drive away, with its remarkable forest, complete with scenic forest trails for walkers and cyclists, lake and mountain views, and Go Ape, a tree top zip line attraction, offering undistributed views, for those seeking an adrenaline rush, while close by is the visitor attraction of the National Trust's Hill Top, the 17th century cottage and former home of author Beatrix Potter.

Slightly further afield, you can access Hawkshead and Esthwaite Water, along with Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere lake and a host of attractions including Windermere Jetty.

High Torver House is an idyllic property in a scenic Lake District location.
