  • "Lovely cosy cottage with magnificent views and dog friendly garden."

Everything you would need for a comfy stay was provided and a very helpful information book had been thoughtfully put together. We can’t fault the cottage. For us, the location was too remote and the single track roads and walking paths were perhaps more suited to serious walkers rather than someone using it as a base to discover the wider area. The pub next door was a god send and they delivered plated meals to the cottage when the restaurant was full. They answered all our queries and went above and beyond during our stay. We would absolutely recommend the cottage but be aware it is a 20 minute drive to a “proper” road and driving on these roads is not for the faint hearted!

The views from the back garden were amazing. The cottage was very clean, I was very impressed with the fridge freezer it looked brand new. Comfortable beds and bedding. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to both cook and serve food. The Wi-Fi worked absolutely fine throughout our stay, if you have WhatsApp or messenger you can phone this way with no problem. There are lovely dog walks within a few minutes of the cottage, alongside a river and through numerous fields. One cottage down from ours there is a lovely public house -The Newfield Inn. We had two breakfasts and two evening meals whilst staying at the cottage, the food was great and the staff we met were very friendly, great humans. Dog friendly pub too. Would we stay again at Beckfold Cottage - Definitely.

A beautifully-situated cottage; very comfortable and all the equipment you need. An enclosed garden for the dog, an excellent walk just behind the cottage and a very welcoming pub with good pub food next door. The Dudden Valley is very beautiful but not as crowded as other parts of the Lake District.

We were new to Dunnerdale and so enjoyed doing so much straight from the door. Cosy and characterful cottage which was well equipped (great to have lots of spare crockery!) and the garden was just fab to eat out in. This was a first trip with dog to the mountains and the extensive walk guides and the little dog-friendly touches were much appreciated.

It is perfectly equipped with everything you need, including the pub on your doorstep! We remembered to bring along some wood etc. for the woodburner and thoroughly enjoyed the warmth and atmosphere it created in the cosy living room. We return to the Duddon valley each year, it is so beautiful and I'm sure we will be back at Beckfold Cottage very soon.

  • "Hi. The cottage was well equipped overall."

Just a couple of baking trays are required in the kitchen. The bed was very comfortable with lovely clean sheets etc. Lots of areas were nicely clean however the carpet was very dusty! The vacuum at the cottage is actually broken and held together with duck tape and is a very under powered feeble thing. If this is what the cleaner is using then I’m not surprised about the carpet. If they bring a different vacuum, then it is still an issue. The stove in the lounge was super. We took paper, kindling and logs with us. I do think it would be a really nice touch if the fire was made up ready to light on arrival. The cottage was warm when we arrived and we were very careful to be conservative with the radiators during our stay as we appreciate how much fuel bills are for us all. The dog first aid, blankets and bowls were very thoughtful. We did make use of the doggy tea tree oil cream as our greyhound cut his paw. Thankyou. There were many birds in the garden which was a treat. I love watching them. It would be good to have a bird table. I would certainly have put food on it during my visit. Being one door down from the pub was a definite plus. I would be happy to stay again if I was in the Lake District again.

Would definitely visit again. Huge steps to garden through doors which can be a bit tricky with your hands full but no complaints. Couldnt find a couple of items (tea towels, bag for dirty towels and bedding) but again no complaints. Didn't get to use the fire as although the weather was a bit cloudy and rained at times, the cottage was warm enough without. A great place for walks just outside the door.

  • "This cottage is all about the location for us."

If you are looking for something out the way but with the convenience of a close pub then this is great. The valley its in is stunning, you have so much to explore right on your doorstep, from mountain walks to a river with small waterfalls and pools. Definitely 5 stars for location. The cottage itself, there are two sides to this review for us. The good points are its a lovely old cottage, nice size and has everything we needed. Furthermore the garden was great, a good size, enclosed so good for your 4 legged friends and the views were stunning and the soundtrack of the nearby river very relaxing. The negatives are unfortunately around cleanliness and Maintenance. It is in need of attention on both fronts. On the surface its clean enough, perfectly livable, however if you have the need to move any furniture for example, you find that the cleaning doesn't extend beyond the surface! From a maintenance perspective it really is in need of decorating, new furniture and general maintenence in the bathroom and kitchen. In summary we would recommend, its location is the main selling point and although we have honestly reviewed above, including the negatives, it was overall a nice cottage to stay in, perfect place to relax and unwind.

The pub next door was most welcome! The burner is a bit fiddly requiring some working out, but once we read the detailed instructions we worked it out. The information in the house folder was very useful and detailed. The weather was beautiful while we were there, which unfortunately meant the bedding supplied was too heavy for the levels of warmth. Maybe there was lighter bedding stored that we didn’t find? The shower was also a little lacking in pressure. Having the wild swimming locations pointed out was very welcome- and it was amazing to be able to walk from the front door to such a magical spot near memorial bridge! Our party decided we would definitely return in future to this cottage.

  • "First time using Sykes cottages and the experience wasn't the best one."

We arrived in the evening under heavy snow looking forward for a warm place and the cottage was set to SEVEN degrees! It was absolutely freezing in there. We turned all the heater on but they are electric ones and takes a long time to kick in. I tried to light the fire but there was only one log and half-burned one in the basked and some newspapers, nothing else, no kindling, nothing. I tried to contact Sykes straight away to see if they could provide an emergency fan heater but no reply whatsoever. We had to go to the pub to stay in a warm environment while the house was getting warmer but it didn't make much difference to be honest. We were extremely frustrating and disappointed with Sykes Cottages. Next day I found some logs and kindling in the shed but Sykes should have provided it on reception. Other things that worth mentioning is the access to the garden is very difficult, if one has a mobility issue it would be almost impossible. The step from the living room to the garden is over 40cm high! I'm glad I had a sturdy box with me that I could use as a mid step. We didn't see a reason to choose the zipped bed therefore we were using the double bed. The problem is the floor is completely uneven (understandable) so the bed is in a position where your head is lower than your feet making utterly uncomfortable to sleep. Once the cottage was warm it was very pleasant to stay, someone mentioned it is a bit dated but I see no reason why change anything in there since they accept dogs and that's a very good thing. They even provide a few specific things for the canines. The location is brilliant and the pub next door is also excellent and very helpful (the landlord gave me a couple of logs for the fire in the first night). Many walks from the property and a big folder with details about the surrounding area. Many books about lake district with all sorts of walks possible. Quite well equipped kitchen and there were coffee and tea available. The shower pressure is very weak but better than not having one, one can have a good shower anyway. The garden is secure for the furry friends. Despite all the disappointment with Sykes Cottages on arrival it is a place I would stay again.

! The cottage had all the things I needed for a week’s stay with my dog, a well equipped kitchen, tv and Wi-Fi and a very comfortable bed. When the weather warms up I can imagine sitting out in the small enclosed garden on the chairs there. Full of snowdrops for my week. If you want to explore further afield it’s not far to Coniston, Ambleside or the coast. For shopping you will need to travel about 30 minutes but I did see Tesco deliver locally!! Due to remote location of cottage a small welcome pack of tea, coffee and milk would have benefitted. There were no problems with parking at any time of the day. Beautiful views from all the windows in the cottage. A lovely, enclosed garden so I didn’t have to worry about my dog! The cottage was so cosy with the log burner. The bed was very comfortable! The bath hot water tap wasn’t working but someone came out the same day to fix it! Multiple hikes from the doorstep, with a beautiful woods that had a spot perfect for some cold water therapy/wild swimming. It is a fair drive to the nearest shop, however that is stated in their description and we didn’t mind as they were scenic drives to the shops, and it is also the price you have to pay if you want your stay to be quiet and secluded, away from the noise! There is a pub next door that does breakfast, lunch and dinner! Also very dog friendly and the staff were lovely. In the cottage, there were dog blankets provided and dog bowls. My dog was very comfortable and settled there. There is no signal in this area but the WiFi works great - if you’re using maps/GPS on your phone then make sure to start it before you leave the cottage! My partner can be picky but he absolutely loved this place. We would definitely recommend this cottage.

Not too far to to travel to stunning locations - Coniston, Ambleside, Windermere etc all within an hours drive. The cottage itself was in the most perfect spot - peaceful with stunning scenery from all sides of the cottage. We spent days walking just direct from the cottage. The pub (right next door!) was lovely - very friendly and welcoming. Nice to pop in for a drink before heading back to the cottage for dinner. The cottage was so well equipped (I was very impressed) with everything thought about in the small but perfect kitchen - including Tupperware for those left over meals and crystal style wine glasses and a lovely Denby dinner set. Lovely big TV with netflix, which I will admit we barely used - it was nice to just cosy up on the sofa with a good book after a day spent exploring. Very steep steps towards the top of the staircase (I am just under 5ft) so felt like I was climbing a mountain with each step! But absolutely fine, just helped burn off those extra calories from the drinks! Bed super, super cosy - with a lovely mattress topper and a duvet that seems to wrap you up making it very difficult to get out of in the morning! (we looked at the label so we can try and get the same duvet at home!) We had difficulty getting timer on the radiator in the bedroom to work but got it on the override setting for a few hours each morning and evening and that worked fine and kept the room nice and toasty. Also couldn't get the hot tap in the bath to work (shower was fine) but have reported that to Sykes so I am sure that will get sorted soon. All in all, my partner, dog and myself had a fabulous week and already can't wait to return.

We had wondered if we would regret going for somewhere more remote than our usual choice, but we needn’t have worried, we absolutely loved the peace and quiet. Woke up the first morning to cows gently mooing in the field at the front and birds chirping in the garden at the back. The next morning I happened to look out and saw a sea of sheep being herded past the cottage… It was like going back to another time and slower pace of life, you could feel the everyday stresses just melting away. It’s a beautiful area with the river nearby and nice walks right from the door if you don’t fancy driving, and plenty of space for parking outside the cottage. The pub is practically next door and does great food with a good selection of ales. There are no shops nearby, but we brought our own food with us so it wasn’t an issue and the pub sells all the basics (including tasty farmhouse bread). The cottage itself is small but cosy and well equipped with everything we needed, nice comfy beds and good heating. Pleasantly surprised to find no problems with the Internet, although there was no mobile reception (I turned on Wi-Fi Calling and it was fine). There’s also a landline you can use, which is reassuring. Great to have a porch for wet coats and muddy boots. The enclosed garden is fantastic for dogs (although no garden light so bring a torch for letting dogs out late at night). Refreshing to get away from the crowds you always find at better known places like Windermere, even at this time of year. So pleased we discovered this little gem, we’ll definitely be coming back!

About the location

BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS

Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.

Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.

Please Note: The staircase is quite steep and narrows at the top so may be unsuitable for those with mobility issues.
