  • "We enjoyed our stay at this very well equipped cottage."

Lovely area, fabulous dining pub next door and really friendly local people. The cottage was very old and dated as noted by other guests who had stayed there. It would have been nice to have doors on the cupboards in the kitchen and have the microwave and fridge in the kitchen instead of the pantry, the bathroom taps were very quirky and had to be turned many times before the water came out and the heating didn't come on when it was supposed to. However it is an old characterful property with lots of space, in a fabulous location with a cosy log burner and lots of logs and none of the above quirky things were a great problem for us and we would be happy to stay there again. Many thanks

  • "The cottage was superb with all the facilities we needed."

We were unlucky with the weather which meant we spent more time in the cottage during the day than we usually would so the cosy fire, the comfy seating, the well equipped kitchen, the good wi fi signal and the tv were much appreciated. The beds were also comfortable so we slept quite well , however it is an old house so the floors and stairs do creak very loudly, a night time visit to the bathroom will waken all but the dead

The owners have provided everything you could possibly need and then some. The Fox and Hounds pub just outside the back gate is a definite bonus. Note that this is only open for 5 days each week but the Buck Inn, Racehorses Hotel and Blue Bell can help fill the gap.

  • "We had a lovely stay and thought the cottage was very clean and comfortable."

We did have a bit of difficulty working out how to use the heating. The heating didn't seem to come on for long enough in the morning to make a difference and it was still quite cold, although it did warm up during the week. On the night that it rained hard water leaked in through the ceiling on the landing near the bedroom doors. We left a bucket to catch the drips and a note for the housekeeper.

  • "We had originally booked this cottage for the end of March 2020, but with all of the uncertainty surrounding travel and social restrictions at the time, we felt that it was most unwise to commit to travelling around 200 miles at a time when it was quite possible that such journeys would be prohibited at short notice."

We explained this to Sykes, once we had been able to contact the office, and proceeded to rebook for later in the year. That incurred a rebooking fee despite our decision not to take up the original booking slot being based on the advice then being offered by the government. The same situation arose in October, when we had to rebook again, thjs time for April 2021 - and again incurred a rebooking fee. On both occasions that we had to rebook, we found the response from Sykes' staff unhelpful to the point that we seriously considered just throwing away the rental charges that we had already paid. We also found the company's policy of charging rebooking fees when our need to rebook was a consequence of government advice completely unacceptable. We will not be booking future holidays through Sykes - ever. Our holiday itself was really good, when we finally got there.

  • "Having paid an inflated price for the new year week we arrived on Friday 27th Dec."

(it was cold and wet) to find the cottage FREEZING. The description says ". . cottage offers warm welcoming accommodation. . " - this could not have been further from the truth. We then spent the following 24 hours trying to get the property to a reasonable temperature. It would appear that the cottage had not had guests for a few weeks. The caretaker had been to the house prior to our arrival as there was milk in the fridge. WHY was the heating not put on at a low setting? We have stayed in many holiday properties in all seasons and this was certainly the most unwelcoming property we have encountered. A truly miserable way to begin a weeks holiday.

It had everything we needed for a comfortable and peaceful stay in the Yorkshire Dales. Open fire, comfy bed and a well equipped kitchen/storeroom. Plenty of information and excellent WiFi throughout the house. Starbotton has a friendly staffed pub serving food and ales and Cecilias does a fantastic rustic Italian style pizza. Buckden and KettleWell are within a two mile riverside walk. The Wensleydale Creamery, where you can taste test over 30 different cheeses for free is in the village of Hawes which is approx 15miles away. It also has a cheese making demonstration, cafe and gift shop. There are plenty of walks for you and the dog if you have one including Buckden Pike and the lead mine. Spacious, comfortable, and very well appointed. As pet owners, we always worry about our dogs in cottages, but Coates Lane Farm Cottage is one of the best suited that we have stayed in, with sensible carpets and flooring downstairs making it easy to keep clean. The rear enclosed garden is hard standing making it easy to clean paws and avoid muddy footprints.. We found our short break there very relaxing, and will definitely be going back.

About the location

STARBOTTON

Kettlewell & Buckden 2 miles; Grassington 12 miles.

Nestling in the Upper Wharfedale Valley between Kettlewell and Buckden, this idyllic National Park village makes the perfect place from which to explore the wonderful scenery and pretty villages of this magnificent Dale. Much of Upper Wharfedale is National Trust owned - an indication of the beauty of its classic countryside, with dry-stone walls and barns, important flower-rich hay meadows and valleyside woodland. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best walking areas in the Dales, with The Dales Way passing nearby, good access to Buckden Pike and gentle walks along the riverbanks. The village itself comprises a cluster of stone-built cottages and houses with, at its centre, the wonderful 'Fox and Hounds' pub serving great ales and fine food.
