  • "The cottage had everything we needed, it was well equipped, clean and comfy."

The bed was extremely comfortable. The only down side is the tracks up to the property they are very rough and quite a distance from the tarmac road.

  • "Everything about the cottage appeals to me."

Great fixtures and fittings. Comfortable, cosy , but certainly spacious enough. Although other dwellings/buildings are close by it is extremely peaceful and quiet. I loved the cool feeling as I walked in, coming in out if the hot weather. Although I didn’t need to use the heating at any time. The only slight concern I had ,was that I needed to park very close to next doors car, so that access passed the back of my (long) car was not restricted. To make the access clear I had to park up against the shrub against the cottage wall, creating a few scratches that polished out without a problem. But despite that , 99% pleased with my week at the Cottage. A wonderful holiday.

The bathroom showed signs of mould in the shower /bath/walls and window, the shower was only working at a low pressure. We struggled to sleep as the mattresses was so soft, it collapsed in the middle and left both of us waking up with back and neck discomfort. The towel radiator was not working. We loved the location, and quietness. In all, this property could be stunning, but feels in need of a full refurbishment.

Comfortable and cosy .Only tiny negative for us was the bed is a double with head and footboard and though very comfortable to small for my husband who is 6”4 . If there were a king sized. bed or bed with no footboard we would stay again in a heartbeat!.

  • "Nice little cottage overall, but would definitely benefit from having a kingsize bed, as the room is plenty big enough to take one."

Found the water temperature when taking a shower to be only luke warm, and the log burner didn’t seem to throw out much heat(maybe because the logs that were left for us to use, were damp?) so relied heavily on the 2 electric heaters. Would have been nice to have had a throw/blanket on the settee to keep warm. There was no instructions in the book at the property , as to whether we were to strip the beds or where to put all the recycling bags (separate ones for plastic, paper, glass and tins) on departure .The road leading to the cottage had many potholes, and because they were full of water, it was difficult to assess which ones were less likely to cause damage to our car, as it was hard to avoid them

  • "A perfectly equipped cottage nestled at the foot of the beautiful Whitbarrow Scar."

Numerous walks on the doorstep and in the nearby vicinity, meant that we started the majority of our walks from the cottage itself. The cottage was extremely well equipped with everything required to make it a home from home experience, yet retaining the relaxed surroundings of a typical Lakeland cottage. The owners Stewart and his wife were on hand on the occasions that we needed assistance and could't have been more accommodating. All in all there isn't anything that my wife and I would have changed which could have improved our weeks stay. A perfect way to start 2024! We look forward to revisiting Coachman's Cottage at some point in the near future. Kindest regards, Craig & Johanna Stones

Would have preferred a firmer mattress on the bed, but that was my only very minor criticism. In very relaxing surroundings with woodland on two sides, so no distant views from the cottage itself, but fantastic views a few steps away. The small attractive front garden with its seating bench gets the morning sun - great for a lazy late breakfast whilst planning my day's outings. I'm a keen botanist so had a choice of lots of interesting habitats very close by to explore, including the Whitbarrow NNR right on the doorstep. Nature reserves and public footpaths in abundance in this area. Even though it was August bank holiday week, it was easy to escape the crowds. The cottage is far enough away from the very busy A590 to not be troubled by the sound of traffic. My VW Polo handled the gravelled track to the cottage fine. I intend to stay again.

Comfortable and all the equipment you could want. Some pleasant walking straight from the cottage. Two minor points, parking is tight and road up to the cottage is very rough. The ventilation fan in the bathroom was not working and window does not open so condensation was a minor issue. As a driver of an EV would have appreciated charging facilities on site. Nearest charger is 18 mile round trip.

  • "A well presented, spotlessly clean & surprisingly spacious cottage in a secluded location on the hillside."

The access to the cottage is via a bumpy one track road that weaves up the hillside (having a 4x4 vehicle would definitely be beneficial!). The location is very secluded and peaceful which we appreciated. Access to facilities such as grocery shops and the pub is a drive away (you could get to the Derby Arms pub on foot but would take over 30 minutes there and back so a car is preferable). We found the closest supermarkets (small Tesco and Coop) to be in Grange over Sands which is approx 15min drive. Closeby is the steam train which takes you to lakeside where you can board a boat to Bowness and Ambleside - this makes for a lovely day out. Also within reach is Levens Hall and Sizergh Castle, both are lovely historic places to visit. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Coachmans and appreciated the kind thought of leaving us a delightful lemon drizzle cake, tea/coffee sachets, milk and a large bottle of water for when we arrived.

The road up to the cottage is a single track road and uneven, but this was what we expected as it was stated in the listing. The cottage was very well equipped. Most of the furniture in the sitting room was of 'house clearance' quality and appearance which did not particularly concern us, since we were only there in the evenings and overnight. Our main complaint was the bed. The bed itself was of a very cheap quality and the mattress was literally coming apart at the seams. We tried to sleep on it for two nights but on the next day we called the owner. He came promptly and when we voiced our complaint he said that he knew the mattress needed replacing but 'didn't realise it was that bad'!!! We told him we were not prepared to sleep on it again and he said he could arrange to get a replacement mattress that day but not a new bed. We accepted this and on our return that evening a new mattress had been installed. This was of a foam type certainly not of the quality we are used to at home but we did manage to sleep on it. Our view is that the most important item in any accommodation is the bed and that this should always be a priority provision by the owner. We would have expected a good quality interior sprung mattress as we have usually had when renting cottages elsewhere. This episode has certainly coloured our view of Coachman's Cottage and we would not recommend it to anyone else for that reason. It has also questioned whether we would rent through Sykes Cottages again.

The one or two neighbours we met were helpful and friendly. The only thing I would mention is that the shower was not very powerful but this could be down to the outside mains pressure. I did not mention in my comments to the owners as it may be outside their control and it certainly did not spoil our wonderful stay. An additional bonus was that the sun shone every day! I would certainly recommend this cottage to friends.
