  • "The fenced garden is only secure for medium /large dogs, it isn’t truly dog friendly as they are not free to roam the house either."

The step into the house should be wider to allow for the collection of water on rainy days,I would recommend the same for the area of hot tub which Sally slid backwards on landing on her back and the stepping arrangemt up into the garden was equally hazardous. The image on line had cushions on the kitchen chairs and the day bed upstairs which were not there when we arrived, we had to wash the crockery ,cutlery and glasses before using them, there was food on the breadboard which we left untouched. This affected how comfortable we felt and affected us from the start. There was a general lack of care; the stone wall in the bathroom needed a good clean, the silicone around the shower area needed renewing. The smaller front bedroom had webs and a swarm of midges considering we only got inside around 4:30 due to the change over policy. It should also be pointed out that this is not a secluded position as the barn is a holiday let and there are signs for more lodges off the drive the photos are disingenuous. There was an infestation of flies around the downstairs area which we spent a lot of time hoovering up and using fly tape, it was really bad, we couldn’t beat them, no idea how they were getting in.All in all this was a disappointing property and vastly over priced. The property could do with a dish washer too.

We are so upset to read this review. We try our very best to ensure our guests have a wonderful stay with us. We were unaware of any of these issues during your stay. We only wish that you would have contacted us directly at the time of your stay to inform us of your findings and disappointment. This is not something that is normal and to us, is not acceptable and I will be discussing this with my cleaner/house keeper. There were however chair covers in the cupboard as some guests have mentioned they do not like them so we leave them off for guests to choose. The day bed is only made upon request which is stated on website. Ploony cottage sleeps up to 6 guests, the day bed is an extra bed for a small child in the master bedroom near the king bed. The steps up to hot tub and garden both have hand rails for safety reasons. Steps do become slippery in wet weather. (I’m sorry Sally slipped and I do hope she’s ok) Unfortunately we are unable to fit a dishwasher in the property. We would really love to have been able to do this for our guests. We will be looking into all of the issues you have expressed. We are truly sorry you did not have a wonderful experience at Ploony. Take care Lindsey and Darren. Property Owner

  • "T is a shame I am compelled to write this but as the cottage and location are a gem."

However, after failing to resolve privately with either owners or sykes I have little choice. We had an electrical issue (similar it would seem to those in 2023 in the reviews). The issue is a known leaky worktop (a known issue as evidenced in text messages from the owner) and the use of a live coiled extension lead underneath. Needless to say a dangerous situation. As referenced in previous reviews there is no signal and with internet down I was claiming up the hill to contact the owner. The response was delayed, defensive and inadequate. With the electric back after 3 hours, the longer solution, to come back the next day with a hairdryer!!! Not acceptable in any circumstance but when paying near £1000 for 4 nights this stung. Agreed to be in all morning no one turned up till 2. Since complaining through Sykes (a complete waste of time) the owners have refused all responsibility and I was surprised that no good will gesture was offered. After reading some of the reviews and responses I do not expect anything other than a defensive response on here. Like I said a real shame as other than the safety issue, it is a gem of a place.

Glad you found the location and cottage a little gem as do all our other guests. There was no electrical issuse in the cottage it was a issuse with putting wet dishes on the worktop and not on the draining board. The electrical system did its job and tripped off when water dripped onto the water uv system which is located in the kitchen unit just to the left of the sink, this is something that we have to have to make sure the water is safe to drink and is tested by Powys county council on a annual basis with no issues, and the electical system is fully compliant wth part p regulations. We were returning on a train when we were made aware of the issue and I came at 10pm to sort out the issue it was a 10 second job. You didnt want the uv put back on for the last 2 days of your stay so we provided you with plenty of drinking water for that period. The mobile signal is a bit sporadic in the cottage itself as it has very thick walls, signal is fine in the garden. The majority of guests like yourself find ploony cottage to be a gem of a place and lots of guests return year after year, enjoy the rest of your summer and hopefully see you again Thanks Darren Property Owner

The area is absolutely stunning and peaceful. It was perfect for my dog with fencing around the garden so she could wonder while I was in the amazing hot tub. The hot tub is covered also so was perfect in the rain. The house its self was fantastic, very clean and had everything we needed. Even used the fire place and watched some Tele it was so relaxing. Couches were so comfy. The kitchen had everything we needed, great big table in there to sit and eat your meals it was really lovely. The beds were unbelievably comfy! Best bed I’ve ever slept in and everyone else agreed. Bathroom was clean and plenty of loo roll was given and towels provided. My guests, myself and my dog really enjoyed our stay and the host couldn’t have been more accomodating, she recommended walks around the area straight from the cottage and also gave great detailed instructions on how to get there. I would highly recommend staying here it’s a piece of heaven!! Beautiful home, beautiful location and beautiful views. I can’t wait to stay again!

  • "Once you get your head around this being a traditional farmhouse and to expect dust and cobwebs then these little things bother you less."

The farmhouse has a rustic charm and the owners clearly take great pride in making sure the grounds and facilities are maintained regularly. It's obviously a well used house and there are a few things that are starting to need a bit of TLC which I have no doubt are already on their radar. Really lovely location and very peaceful, unless you book to stay right in the middle of the Wales motorbike Enduro race like we did!! Otherwise there is nothing but sheep amd cows around. It was lovely to sit outside at dusk watching the bats flitting about. Shame that the pub at the end of the lane is closed but there are a few lovely places in the nearby towns which offer nice food and drink. Overall we enjoyed our stay and the house was lovely, it won't suit everyone and if you are looking for something more modern the barn next door or the lodges/cabins further down may be more for you but really can't fault how friendly and accommodating the owners of Ploony are. Definitely recommend and hope to be back :-)

The hand rail going to the upper garden needs replacing as the 1st & 3rd post are rotten as we had a 79 year old with us which nearly fell over because of this. inside the cottage the bedrooms and bedding was good the bathroom needed a deep clean and a new shower mat as the present one has mould and yellow staining . the sitting room room was soulless the kitchen was dirty the pots ,pans , plates had food / grease on them also the were chipped fridge had rust on and the cupboards were dirty and doors coming off in general some TLC is needed it would of been nice to see some pictures of the livestock / farm in the cottage if these items are sorted it would be a great place to stay

Hi Kevin. We are very pleased you had a good stay at Ploony Cottage however we are upset to read about the issues you had. This is absolutely not up to our usual standard and we will be investigating this further and ensuring these issue are put right. Beautiful garden and is enclosed all the way round with 4ft stock fencing and has a beautiful stream running through it. • "We had a lovely week in Ploony Cottage, but the awful track up to the cottage discouraged us from driving on it too often."

We brought most of our food with us, so only visited Knighton on two occasions for fresh milk, etc. The cottage was comfortable, with a large kitchen/diner and cosy sitting room. Kitchen was well stocked, with a few exceptions. We couldn’t work out the heating controls, which meant we weren’t warm enough on rainy/cold days; when it did work, it warmed up the cottage very quickly. The electricity went off one morning, which meant no Wifi and with no mobile signal anywhere - we were isolated. We drove down the lane trying to get a signal but luckily saw a local farmer, who was able to contact the owner; he came out within an hour and located/fixed the problem - caused by a leaky washing up bowl. Without the farmer’s help we’re not sure what we would have done. The garden, with the small stream, was ideal for the dogs, although they needed to be watched when a flock of sheep came down the lane and occupied the adjoining field. Two large bedrooms and one small bedroom, but only one wardrobe in one of the bedrooms, wasn’t ideal. A second toilet would have been advantageous. We were surprised to read that we needed to clean before leaving and strip the beds, especially when we had to vacate by 10.00 am. We’ve never come across this before, and whilst we’ve always left a holiday home as clean and tidy as possible, we’ve never been told that a bond of £150 would be withheld.

I’m pleased you had a lovely week here. Although I am disappointed to read that you couldn’t work the heating, Darren would have happily showed you when he came to sort the power cut or I would have been more than happy to have been contacted as I mention in welcome pack. Unfortunately a small about of guests do not always leave our cottage in a good way so all we ask is that guests leave it as they found it, most guests do this. We normally accept 2 wellbehaved dogs but on this occasion we agreed to accept a 3rd dog at your request and I was disappointed to find that you didnt clear up any of the dog mess from the garden Thank you for stripping the beds, it was suggested by sykes that we ask guests to do this since reopening after covid. I would have been happy for you to leave the bedding if you were not happy to strip them yourself. Sorry about that. Thank you for booking Ploony Cottage. Take care Many thanks. Lindsey. Overall the cottage was nice and relatively well equipped, although would have benefited from a dishwasher and perhaps a sieve or colander (to strain veg when cooking) Finally, I would say that if as requested you don’t want wipes etc put down the toilet, it would have been nice to provide small bags to put them in before they go in the bin (for hygiene reasons)

Hi Gareth. Really pleased you had a lovely stay at Ploony and enjoyed the peace and quiet as mentioned in feedback left in cottage. Thank you for making me aware about the stain on the duvet, I have now replaced with a new one. So sorry about the wifi, it is usually ok. The water pump is in a cupboard downstairs to pump the water around the property and comes on when water is being used so shouldn’t be too intrusive, sorry if you felt it was. Sorry there is no dishwasher and I was unaware the colander has gone missing, thank you for highlighting this as I will now replace this. Yes I agree there should be small bags provided for the pedal bin in bathroom, I will ensure there is in future. As mentioned in welcome pack I am always happy for guests to contact me directly with any issues or requests and I would resolve them asap for you. Thank you for coming to stay at Ploony. Very quiet and a place to enjoy nature. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. Loved the stone floor and big farmhouse kitchen. The hot tub was a bonus! The garden is enclosed and dog proof for most dogs except for Houdini terriers like ours so was on a lead. The walking in the hills nearby was fantastic - need a map and compass as there is no phone reception. Presteigne was a great place to visit, especially the Judges Lodgings which still uses oil and gas lamps. Overall a fantastic holiday - highlight was being able to see the stars in a night sky with no light pollution. Just lovely.

All 6 human guests loved the comfort of the beds and the beautiful views from the bedroom windows. We loved the large kitchen and comfortable living room. When the barn has guests the privacy is not ideal as we could see and hear them, and they could see and hear us. The UV light that couldn't be easily repaired could have been a major problem but the bottled water provided solved the issue very well. The barbed wire on top of some of the garden fences could injure larger dogs, ours was OK, but he needed to be supervised when at the top of the garden. The track to reach the cottage is very rough and made us not want to go out much. Not a problem in a Range Rover, but our small car struggled a bit in places. It would be useful to know if the there is a schedule for the sheep and cows in the adjacent field, as we got trapped by about 30 cows when coming back to the cottage after a walk with the dog. Overall we will have fond memories of our time in Ploony Cottage and we thank Lindsey and Darren for their prompt responses to all our queries

Hi Iain, Thank you for coming to stay at Ploony. I’m so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Sorry you felt the privacy was not ideal however the properties don’t look directly onto each other and the hot tubs are at opposite ends of the properties and can not be seen. It says in the info on the website that Ploony cottage is situated adjacent to Ploony barn and this can be seen in the photographs on the website to make it obvious to guests that there is a barn conversion across the yard. In regards to the uv filter, it couldn’t have been a major problem because Darren fixed it the day you left and it would have been fixed immediately if you would have been happy to let him access the property when you first notified us that it suddenly started beeping. Plenty of Bottled water was bought for you all to drink. All fences are stock proof barbed wire fences due to it being a farm to prevent livestock entering the garden. Sorry, there is no schedule for the sheep and cattle, they roam the land and come down to the stream at the bottom to drink when they are thirsty. Due to the heavy rain we have been having over the passed 5 weeks the road has become slightly rougher than normal. We have been in contact with the local council as this is a council maintained road and this will be addressed very shortly. I am really pleased that you really liked the cottage and enjoyed our beautiful countryside. Many thanks Take care Lindsey. Property Owner

We were 5 adults with 2 lively dogs and it was perfect. The cottage was located about 3/4 mile down a farm track at the end of a beautiful valley. This cottage is a traditional stone farm house with flag stone floor and rustic features. There are also 3 wooden lodges nearby (but still private) which I think are owned by the same owner. All look lovely too. What made our holiday was that we were treated to amazing weather and spent most of our time outside, The garden has a patio with furniture, a hot tub, a stream and plenty of lawn. There is a flat section where children could play. The gate opens straight into fields which we could walk the dogs in (so long as sheep are not in the field). The garden is dog secure which was really useful for us. We spent the week doing local walks and visiting Hay-on-Wye and Ludlow which were beautiful. Unfortunately, the pub in Bleddfa has closed but we did walk to the Greyhound Inn in Llangunllo which was a lovely walk (2 1/2 miles) and a nice pub with a garden. The Horse and Jockey in Knighton has a nice courtyard area and an old characterful interior. All in all it was just what we needed and we hope to return, although, I doubt we'll be so lucky weather the weather again.

Very remote but there were a couple of other cottages behind it so you aren't completely alone. There is a gorgeous little stream running through the garden and birds galore singing in the garden. The views from the garden I could have looked at all day. It has a very relaxing feel. The property itself was spacious and clean if quite basic in facilities. The bedding was lovely and soft and the bed comfy so we slept really well during our stay. Only one small towel provided per guest which would have been fine but due to the hot tub it would have been nice to have a spare available. There is no signal at the property so unless your phone has Internet calling then contacting to report issues might be a challenge. I am on O2 but my husband on EE did get some signal in the garden. Also worth noting that no soft furnishings at the property such as pillows or throws. I love to cuddle up at night under a blanket or sit out with a blanket to stave off the chill. Would need to take my own next time along with spare towels. They also did not provide any free tea, coffee, milk etc but there was a bottle of red wine so it depends on your priorities! Lovely hot tub, especially after a hard day's walk. The access track was a tad more rough than I'd expected and really long, and awkward to pass other vehicles on, which we had to do on couple of occasions. During our stay we had a couple of really windy nights, and I was nervous of the large sycamore tree, so tucked my car up close to the cottage, which was clearly the right option as a large branch had dropped out! I would suggest that you have the tree lowered to avoid any such repeats. The farmdogs at the end of the track are a nuance, they repeatedly tried to bite my car tyres and would run along next to the car. Also the pub in the village is currently shut, so the nearest place for food is either over the hills to Knighton or down the valley to Presteigne. Other than that it was a good place for star gazing as the is no light pollution.

Ploony Cottage was lovely, cosy & perfect for dogs. The enclosed garden with stream was perfect for our 2 dogs - open the front door & let them go safe. The flag stone kitchen again great after wet walks & the log fire wonderfull. Beds were comfy too. The hot tub was beautifully secluded & one of the hottest we,ve ever been in, although not all of the jets worked perfectly. Could do with some lighting around the hot tub for evenings would be a suggestion. Thoroughly recommended place to stay if you love peace & quiet.

The cottage is amazing, we took our pup with us and he loved it! Very secure gardens and wider spaces. Log fire, very well maintained hot tub. The bed was lovely and comfy and the kitchen is fantastic. All stone floor so really easy to keep clean after our walks. Darren and Lyndsey arranged for flowers to be in the room and they were lovely! Both of these guys were easy to contact and just a pleasure. We will be going back! John & Fiona

The house was clean and tidy and the hot tub was perfect. There are a few new lodges built up the hill by the owners and I think the owners have been spending time on those, and now the house it’s self needs a little bit of tlc too. The road to the house is long and bumpy as previously stated, but if you drive slowly not a problem, we would love to return to Ploony cottage some day.

Very friendly hosts who greeted us with a bottle of prosecco and fresh eggs from their chicken's. Facilities were great, the only slight downfall was the outside lights where motion sensors and turned off whilst we was in the hot tub, making getting out rather risky in the pitch black and having to navigate down the steps to turn the lights back on. A big thank you to Darren, Lindsey and family for making us part of their family for the week, perfect hosts. The cottage was beautiful on a family run farm in a secluded location. Great night skies due to no light pollution and the hot tub was an added treat. Our Springer spaniel was allowed to be walked off the lead around the fields with the animals but was kept under close control by myself which was a real bonus. Radnor forest was breathing with water breaks it's neck a must see. Yes the driveway is rural but unless you own a high end sports car it shouldn't pose a problem if you drive carefully.

The fact it is on a working farm made all the more special for the children, as they were able to feed the lambs, and were lucky enough to see two lambs being born. And also that it is a working farm and although the garden is fenced the sheep are on the other side of a barbed wire fence and chickens come into the garden, which is all lovely but when you have a large dog who was interested in the animals we couldn't leave him to wander the garden freely for fear or him getting through the fence. All in all an absolutely lovely cottage with fantastic hosts who were full of local information and guidance. Plenty of stunning walks to explore all a short drive away. Water break its neck is a must see! 100% recommend this cottage

Ploony Cottage is very dog friendly and has a secure garden. Guests are encouraged to walk their dogs in and around the farm and along the numerous footpaths. When the guests visited it was lambing season, where livestock are present and do roam in the grounds next the cottage. This is due to the property being located in rural Mid-Wales, on a working farm so you may experience farming activity. However, this does not affect the summer months. Property Owner

Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location. Hosts Darren and Lindsey were really welcoming and friendly. Welsh cakes, wine and flowers in the cottage on arrival. It felt like home as soon as we stepped through the door. The garden was secure for our dogs and the stream that runs through the garden was a huge hit with our daughters (7&2) Due to the stream and steep hilly garden young children will need to be supervised at all times. The internet access was a huge hit with our 18year old son. Good selection of dvds in the cottage as well as a box of games and a few books. Loved seeing the lambs being born although Imogen (7) was a bit grossed out by it

The cottage is the perfect base for families or friends looking to relax and experience an idyllic, peaceful location in the stunning border countryside.

Set over two floors, there are three comfortable bedrooms and a family bathroom, as well as a traditional, well-equipped kitchen with a stone-flagged floor and dining area.

Across the hall is the cosy sitting room with a woodburner, where you can unwind after exploring the area.

Outside, you can sit on the patio in the calming garden, which has a raised veranda with a six-seater hot tub, sloping lawns and a further terraced lawned area looking across the valley and down to the idyllic cottage.

A mountain stream runs through the garden, which offers plenty of room to run and play, sit under the mature trees, or relax on the patio while the children enjoy exploring the large undulating garden.

This delightful farmhouse cottage is situated on a rarely used and ancient by-way, which enables you to walk to a local drink only pub in Llangunllo serving local real ales, being either a one or two mile walk away depending on which direction you choose, a wonderful opportunity to travel along paths used for hundreds of years in unspoilt countryside.

You are ideally placed to explore the green rolling hills and Knighton, making Ploony Cottage the perfect gateway in the Shropshire Hills AONB.

Knighton is linked with the walker’s town of Kington, by Offa’s Dyke that meanders through the countryside along the border between Wales and England, in the area known as the Welsh Marches.

It is a pretty market town, with the traditional landscape of Hergest Croft Gardens and its popular tea rooms.

The area also offers numerous outdoor activities, such as cycling, horse riding and walking, with Offa’s Dyke Path and Glyndwr’s Way just a short drive away, as well as lots of local gardens and golf courses.

Slightly further afield are Builth Wells and the Royal Welsh Showground, which host various annual events, the quaint town of Rhayader where you can visit the Red Kite feeding centre, and the Elan Valley Reservoirs.

Alternatively, visit Ludlow or Leominster, beautiful historic market towns where you can browse local producers and maybe try one of the many restaurants available.

A traditional cottage, nestled in a secluded valley, offering a delightful retreat in the rolling countryside of the Welsh Marches.
