  • "The only thing I would say is there wasn't a mop, as most of the flooring was tiles( great as easier for us asthmatics) unfortunately there were sticky spills on floors but no mop."

I would have liked to have been able to mop the floors during our stay and before leaving. Did hover throughout. As my mum as dementia, I was delighted that the cottage had so many sea side things as it was a great visual aid, to help my mum remember where she with so her being down stairs, us upstairs, when she got up she was able to look around and know where she was

Dear Karen, I am delighted to learn that your mother enjoyed her stay at our cottage. Indeed, having an additional bathroom near the bedroom on the ground floor is ideal for older guests. I am very pleased that you all appreciated our family art work and poetry and chuffed that this allowed your mother to recognise her surroundings despite her dementia. I shall explain that to our younger family members who produce some of the art. Our cleaner had the mop and you might have just sent her a message. However, she will now put it back into the cupboard so it will be easy to access. Many thanks for looking after our cottage and leaving it so clean and tidy. Haste ye back. Rosemary Property Owner

Will look to book again in the new year as unavailable until then. Such a great location, a stone throw from the beach. Just what we needed to relax and unwind.

Looking forward to hosting you again. Haste ye back! Rosemary Property Owner

  • "A good cottage, excellent location."

Carpet a little worn and WiFi signal is ok but not excellent as advertised. Facilities ok although curtains very thin and some of the window blinds etc not in good working order. It was generally clean though. The location is key here and for a beach holiday- great.

We have had no negative feedback about the wifi. It works very well for me, but perhaps it depends where you are in the cottage as the walls are thick. Shall double check, Fiona. We watch the sunsrise and sunset from our windows and never draw the curtains. But point taken and new curtains will be lined. Glad you enjoyed the beach and all that Cullen has to offer! • "A house on the sea-front – what could be better?"

The original fisherman’s cottages on the Moray coast towns were built with small windows and difficult spaces. This one has been brilliantly converted to add light and space, while retaining the feeling of a historic building. It was well-equipped with a good shower.

Even two good showers! Glad you had a good time and received your walking boots in the post once you got home! Property Owner

  • "We loved your little cottage and its brocante styling."

Perfect location and well thought through layout as well as a well equipped kitchen made a really enjoyable holiday. Only downside were the seized windows, which made the house uncomfortable in warm /humid weather unless back door left open and even then one bedroom was very stuffy. Hopefully they’ll be fixed for next guests.

We love our cottage too and are happy to allow our guests to enjoy it as much as we do. Wet weather unfortunately meant one of the sash windows got stuck, and our joiner fixed it promptly. So nice and airy once more. Also we have added artwork by our grandchildren to celebrate the minke whales in the bay. And poetry too, inspired by our family holiday in Dookers’ Hoose. Property Owner

  • "The property itself was great."

Quite small for a taller person but perfect for us and parking was good for a work vehicle.

Very happy that you gave our cottage one hundred percent! It is truly a wonderful place to spend a holiday with the waves crashing on the sea wall and beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the window. Even rainy days are to be savoured, hunkered down under the Velux. Hope Sykes have apologised for their booking error. Haste ye back! Property Owner

So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and were happy with everything! Dooks morning, afternoon and evening! You just can’t beat wild water swimming. Property Owner

  • "We had a great stay at Dookers Hoose thank you!"

Great quirky cottage, location is perfect, just across from the beach, love the area at the back for wet clothes/ wetsuits etc, and the shower room attached, very well thought out! We were in the sea most days , so this area was well used! The cottage had everything we needed are more. Lovely relaxed place to stay, with plenty to do and see round about. Thanks again

Fabulous to learn that everything we put in place for a proper Dookers’ holiday is appreciated! It is a great thing to be able to go for a dook down the steps across the road and come back up and straight into the downstairs shower. Also, plenty places to hang wetsuits and Dookers. Good to share our favourite place with likeminded people. Rosemary Property Owner

  • "Great location."

Recent upgrades make the cottage brighter and more comfortable for the visitors. Beautiful fishing village on the Moray Coast. The family came for visits, so it was ideal for us.

It makes us so happy when families come back year after year and can see their comments and photos in our visitors’ book from times past. So glad you enjoyed yet another stay in a village you know so well. Rosemary Property Owner

  • "The cottage is lovely and has been sympathetically restored."

It has many beautiful pictures adorning the walls which gives it a homely feel. It is very comfortable and relaxing, prefect for an escape from everyday living. We found that the top step of the stairs which is very close to the bathroom door, can be missed easily when leaving the bathroom so needs light on at night.

I am so glad you appreciated the work done in the cottage during lockdown. It has certainly brought a lot of light into our traditional fisherman’s house and the new kitchen is great for cooking and the dining room perfect for enjoying meals together. The art work is mine as well as by some younger members of the family who love to paint and draw when they come on holiday. Property Owner

  • "Great location in a lovely village and the beaches and walks nearby were lovely"

Indeed, the coastal walks and views are breathtaking. This year we swam every day with our grandchildren and a seal joined us on one occasion. From the Bow Fiddle Rock near Portnockie we spotted dolphins and sat on the bench in complete silence watching them dip and dive. Back home and a shower of rain, followed by a rainbow, nay, a double rainbow. Now that is what we call a holiday and why we are happy to share our seafront house with our visitors. Do come again. • "Dookers Hoose is a characterful and charming seaside retreat and was the perfect location for our family holiday."

The house feels very welcoming and has a creative ambiance with artwork by the owner and family decorating the walls, a mix of vintage and modern furniture, books, games and window ledges decorated with seashore finds. This feels more of a home than just a holiday let, situated in Cullen Sea Town with its soft colourful walls, pantiles and tiny gardens at every turn. We loved being able to hear the sea from the house. We enjoyed cooking in the stylish and well-appointed kitchen and were very pleased to find so much space for storing supplies as well as an efficient washing machine. The layout of the ground floor makes it a very sociable space and on cooler evenings, we enjoyed the electric ‘wood burning’ stove which created a cosy atmosphere. We brought some solar powered fairy lights with us for added twinkle. The internet was consistently reliable and we did not for one moment miss having a TV. The little table in the front room was a perfect spot for drawing, painting and writing. We brought bikes, body boards and wetsuits and were delighted to have access to the garage for storage as well as clothes lines which made drying wet kit easy. In front of the garage and opposite the front of the house across a narrow, quiet side road is the small outdoor garden space with a picnic table. This was a lovely sunny spot to sit with morning coffee and a book watching the world go by. Just across the shore road lies the sea wall with steps down to a lovely stretch of sandy beach which is perfect for safe swimming and provides access to long walks along the shore. The steps on the sea side of the wall are a great place to sit with a drink and enjoy the huge skies and stunning sunsets. On your return from a swim, you can enter the little back yard through a gate and access the conveniently placed bathroom with shower. There are lovely coastal walks (or runs) from the house and we saw dolphins on several occasions from paths scented with bracken and wild thyme. The surrounding countryside is beautiful by bike and car, and there are many interesting places to visit. Supplies can be found in Cullen itself where there is a reasonably stocked Co-op and we noticed a deli opening soon. There is an amazing fresh fish shop in nearby Buckie and you may catch your own sea trout from the pier if the seals don’t get there first! If you prefer not to cook your own, the fish and chips in Cullen are consistently good. Any queries during our stay were answered quickly and the visitor’s book is brimming with information on local eateries and places of interest logged by the owners and visitors over the years. A lovely stay and we were sad to leave.

Well Saskia, You seem to have landed in heaven and have enjoyed every aspect of our house! We are so pleased that you have been able to enjoy such a fabulous holiday and to take advantage of everything we care so much about. It is certainly an inspirational place for writers and artists and a great spot for just contemplating life. We look forward to hosting you once again. Rosemary Property Owner

The property

Dookers’ Hoose is a former fisherman’s house, gable end to the sea on the Moray Firth; It is a detached property on two floors and enjoys views over the beach as well as across to the sheltered harbour; There is a small garden which provides a lovely space to relax outdoors, as well as to hang up washing on the line to dry your clothes and swimwear in the sea breeze.

Dooking is the local Doric word for swimming and the house is geared for that; Across the road there are steps leading down to the beach where you can ‘Dook’; The harbour is a wonderful sheltered spot for young children as well as providing opportunities to swim in less clement weather; Within walking distance is the beautiful Cullen Bay which now has a fabulous amenity managed by a local lady; So you can go sea swimming, dip in and out of the waves and enjoy a sauna right on your doorstep.

The property has three bedrooms; A bunk room on the ground floor, a twin room and a double room upstairs; There is a bathroom with shower upstairs as well as a walk-in shower room downstairs, near the bunk room and on the flat; There is also access from outside through the back gate, back door and directly into the shower which caters for young children and the many visitors who enjoy their daily swims.

The kitchen is newly fitted and very well equipped; The dining room has a large table able to seat at least six guests, covered with an oil cloth to protect the wood, providing an excellent space for arts and crafts; Our latest acquisition is a traditional gospel organ which was gifted to us from a nearby fisherman’s cottage and which now nestles in the inglenook fireplace; It is quite precious.

The living room is warm with traditional wood panelling; This room used to be a grocer’s shop and is steeped in local history; Today it is a fine place to relax, read, write and enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

The family have decorated the cottage with their Intergenerational art work and poetry; It is indeed a very special and inspirational place which draws writers and artists to it; Some of them even swim in the sea.

But, Dookers’s Hoose provides families with peace and quiet and a haven far from busy routines where people enjoy television free time.

The visitors’ book is full of stories of past holidays, places to go and recommendations; There is an 18 hole golf course, beautiful coastal walks and many tourist attractions in the vicinity including the whisky distilleries around the River Spey; Surfing on the beach, rowing and rock climbing are some of the activities on offer.

Do come and enjoy a special holiday in an exceptional place with amazing luminosity and fabulous sunsets, and even, if you are lucky, the aurora borealis.

The beautiful Cullen Bay is a 5 minute walk away; By the rock formations known as The Three Kings there is a sauna which is managed by a local lady and is available most of the year; This allows the possibility to dip in and out of the waves and enjoy the benefits of a fabulous facility.

Walk along the coast to Portknockie, a picturesque village housing a delightful harbour, along with enjoying access to a range of walking trails, from the Portknockie Cliffs Path to the Finechty and Portknockie Path.

Continue along the coast to Buckie, another welcoming town enjoying its own idyllic harbour and esteemed golf club, alongside a fascinating heritage centre and a range of green spaces, from Queen Street Park to Harbour Park.

Further afield lies the town of Elgin, where a wealth of activities and attractions await, including the breathtaking ruins of Elgin Cathedral.

Treat your loved ones to a blissful break at Dookers' Hoose.

Where you’ll be staying

CULLEN

Elgin 21 miles.

The Moray coastal town of Cullen is situated on Cullen Bay, an inlet of the Moray Firth, and is an extremely attractive town, originally built around the mouth of the Burn of Deskford. Modern Cullen comprises the delightful fishing village of Seatown and an ‘inland’ area, which stretches up an imposing main street from Seatown, underneath a spectacular viaduct. Although the wealth of Cullen was built on textiles in the 18th century, the town is best known for its fishing heritage, its name being given to a rich, creamy haddock soup known as Cullen Skink. Visitors can enjoy Cullen’s lovely sandy beach, the famous Ice Cream Shop, regarded by many as Scotland’s best ice cream parlour, a fine selection of shops and restaurants, and the historic city of Elgin is within driving distance.
