  • "I stay in the area every 2 months and I’m from this area with family going back generations!"

I dislike giving negative reviews and only had 2 other stays out of over 30 + cottages here with average reviews otherwise I often return to most cottages. I feel I have to list things to make it clear to ensure they are addressed for future visitors without sounding petty. Very disappointing with lack of basic utensils such as no veg peeler, no whisk, no spatula, a side had broken off handle, broken bottle opener, 2 frying pans both burnt, some crockery a bit worn and especially dinner plates. Lack of oven proof dishes(only 1 large lasagna dish) nothing else! Other broken items - mirror taped up in bedroom, frustrating with kitchen bin lid broken. We have never stay anywhere where there is such a lack of ‘basic’ facilities and don’t expect too much in a starter pack for fire but this was very poor! One ‘hand towel’ for two persons for 7 days! Freezer iced up and really needed a proper clean and defrosting. Fridge very small inside and broken light so difficult to see dial as temperature very temperamental and no battery in torch when I tried to use it to cede fridge dial. Think the fridge is so old needs replacing. Damp smell everywhere evidence on skirtings some ceilings and base cupboards in kitchen showing black mould from damp inc plaster coming off walls by front hall etc. Not great for asthma sufferers like myself. This is not condensation this requires damp proofing as many old cottages do and have been damp proofed over the years. Cleanliness needs a bit of attention with dust in places and more so in bedside cabinets and lamps just felt a bit grubby in places. Finishing on a more positive note the shower pressure is great and good some rooms with cosy living room, furnished quite nicely in bedrooms, bed a bit small for a double. Parking we managed outside the house quite well. I regularly stay in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llan Ffestiniog, Tanygrisiau and other areas close by, on the whole, Hen ty Capel is too disappointing to return too. Needs a little attention and added extras to make it worthy of a good review.

Thank you for your comments. The towels were indeed a regrettable cleaning company oversight, we are very sorry about this and we would have resolved this straightaway if we had known at the time. The mirror tape is actually the manuacturer factory tape which seals the rear of the mirror; this type of backing and manufacturer tape is standard on the rear of this type of mirror. The kitchen bin did have a temporary repair and I can confirm it has now been replaced. Apologies if the freezer had too much ice, this can take time to defrost properly and so is not always possible on a changeover but was due to be done at the end of this season, apologies for any inconvenience. The fridge light has now been sorted and the fridge is fully operational again. To my knowledge, the skirting boards and kitchen cupboards were fine when I last visited and there was no odour. We have not received any other guest concerns about this but will of course have those areas checked. The frying pans while they do show usage due to the property being in use so often due to its popularity, are both definitely clean and functional. The sieve is a style that does not have a handle, but we would of course have provided a vegetable peeler and a new bottle opener if we had known, as we pride ourselves on how well equipped the property is, as seen by several other guest reviews this year. We do give a contact number out pre arrival to guests in case they need any help or have any queries and Sykes also have several contact avenues for guests including email, web message, Whatsapp and also a dedicated telephone line for guests at any of their portfolio of properties who may need help during their stay, but unfortunately neither Sykes nor myself were aware you had any issues until you sent your feedback through approximately a month after you had checked out. We are sorry we were not given the opportunity to help you during your stay as we would have done so immediately. Property Owner

  • "Special thanks for the delicacies in the basket, we devoured everything."

The chill room is a very good idea and the board games came in handy on a rainy day. The kitchen is well equipped, the french press was a lifesaver in the morning. The beds were comfortable, we got used to them in one night. The single beds have a light structure, we were afraid that they would break under an adult. We did not try the fireplace, but the instruction manual was very detailed and useful. The neighbors are nice, there was always parking. The only thing I would draw attention to is the stair railing, it sticks out too much at the bottom of the stairs, which can be dangerous. Our five-year-old child ran into it several times and we also crashed into it. We had a great 4 nights here, thank you.

Dear Mrs Pohobics Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with such a detailed review of your stay at Yr Hen Dy Capel. We are delighted that the cottage provided you with everything you and your family needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed to cook various meals when we weren’t out. The decoration of the cottage was really well executed and the little touches were also welcome. The only slight negative was we did struggle a bit with the temperature of the water in the shower - it seemed to be either too hot or cold.

We are delighted that you had an enjoyable stay at the cottage, and that it provided you with everything you needed. We note your comment regarding the shower. We will arrange for a plumber to take a look at this as soon as possible. Your feedback is much appreciated. Diolch. Property Owner

We loved lighting the wood burner in the evenings and sitting down to watch tv and play games at the end of each day. The owners even left a little welcome package with a cake, a bottle of wine and dog biscuits, which were all well received and appreciated. We would definitely recommend the cottage and would not hesitate to book it again. On a separate note, we think Sykes cottage is one of the best rental sites. The app is easy to use and navigate, with all the info at your fingertips. The booklet with instructions and information about the rental property which was at the cottage was also well put together. Thank you very much for providing hard copies of instructions for everything - we would have been lost without it as we aren't very good at looking things up on our phones. The only thing we were a bit unhappy about was that there isn't a big enough pan to cook pasta for 5 - we were 3 adults plus a hungry 15 year old and 11 year old. With that lovely big colandar for draining pasta we found this strange. A smaller sieve would be good too for washing fruit and vegetables. What the place needs is a pasta pan with steaming pans on the top to do vegetables. We enjoyed the giant oblong dish in the cupboard and as I had brought the Quick Roasting Tin recipe book we used that dish every day. With that fierce electric hob we found the three thin frying pans a trial. Otherwise it was a really excellently fitted out place to spend our holiday in.
