• "We enjoyed a lovely January break at Primitive Mews which was once again handled very professionally by Sykes."

  The accommodation was perfect for our needs and ideally situated. We definitely needed the use of the log burner in the living room as the external temperatures were low and the only other source of heating in the room was the electric radiator. There is another electric convector fire but after enquiring about this it seems this doesn't provide hot air only cold air as air conditioning in the summer months. If you visit in the winter months make sure you stock up with fuel for the log burner as you will need it. A small supply of wood was left as a 'starter' pack and there was a note to say that logs could be purchased from the Church Inn pub but the week we were there the pub was closed for kitchen maintenance and staff holidays so we discovered a B & Q on the main A515 road into Buxton (opposite the new Aldi) which had a good supply of coal, logs and eco logs. I think the cottage must have been vacant the week before we arrived as it did feel a little chilly but once we'd got the wood burner going we soon got it cosy. We did arrive in the middle of a very cold spell of weather with thick snow on the ground, I'm sure in the spring and summer months you may not need the log burner so much. The cottage provided everything we needed for a very comfortable week and after the snow had melted we were able to get out on our bikes and enjoy the beautiful scenery and traffic free trails. Thank you to the owner and housekeeper for preparing the cottage so nicely for us and leaving some welcoming 'goodies' to help us get settled in.

• "Property was very grubby, needs a total professional clean."

  Kitchen needs updating, cupboard doors don't fit properly. Location and space good, property quite tired looking.

• "Nice little cottage in a lovely village."

  The use of enclosed paddock just beyond the cottages was great for the dog. Great base for a walking holiday as you can literally set off from the back of the paddock straight on to a footpath and head off on a wonderful circular walk to Horseshoe and Deep Dale. The Church Inn pub is a short walk up the road from cottage and we called in for a drink at the end of our walk.

• "Clean, comfortable cottage in a great location for some beautiful parts of the Peaks."

  Communication with Sykes was very good and the cottage manager, Tracey, was very helpful and lovely to deal with. For a cottage with two double bedrooms, it is light on crockery. There are only four mugs, glasses, plates etc. which means a lot of washing up (there is no dishwasher) but this was a small inconvenience. The beds were comfortable, the cottage was warm and the paddock made it perfect for our dog. Overall, we’d recommend.

• "Heart warmingly cosy and quite."

  Immaculate cleaning pre-arrival. Personal touches be it historical or personal achievements from hosts dotted around the cottage. All topped off with tiny (but magical) details such as the safety light in the corridor and the disco down light in the main bedroom shower. Hosts are non-intrusive and very respectful. Will be coming back to book all 3 cottages at some point soon for a family get together. Would highly recommend!

  We arrived to a welcome pack and all the heating on. Stone floors are excellent for our dog (not allowed upstairs. A huge tv and a 2 acre paddock which allowed our dog to charge around off a lead. Central position to many attractions and very quiet to allow a good nights sleep.

  The downstairs furniture perhaps needs an update. Bathroom clean but again needs a little work due to age. Feel to much clutter in the lounge. Just my opinion. Kitchen has lots of appliances and equipment. Again tables and chairs not practical and dated. Shame about the false grass in the garden. Sign for entrance to the properties needs to be bigger and on both sides of the drive. Would visit again if in the area.

• "Comfortable accommodation and very helpful owners."

  Ideal location for exploring the area. The weather turned very hot for our first week and we found a longboat trip on the Cromford Canal very relaxing. Went and bought a small sharp knife and some disinfectant and cleaning clothes as none available, otherwise all needs were catered for. It was very helpful being able to let our dog come and go in the back garden without having to watch her and she enjoyed a few walks around the field. If the tv could be linked to their internet connection there would be more channels available as the free view signal is very variable. Would recommend this property.

  It was in a great location and the local pub is excellent. It was lovely to have the welcome pack, probably my only concern was there is no recycling in the village so we took our recyclable rubbish home. Is there anything you can do about recycling or suggest people bring a bag to take recycling home (most won't bother but may help some people plan a less environmentally impactful break)?

  It was a cold day when we arrived and the owners had seen to it the heating was on along with lighting so welcoming to step into. An added bonus was receiving a text as soon as the cottage was ready rather than making us wait until the stated 4pm check in really helpful though not asked for. The enclosed garden was safe for our small dog and the meadows/paddock was a delight for him to run in whilst we humans enjoyed far reaching views and a well placed seat or two to take a moment. All in all a lovely stay.

• "What a lovely little cottage, perfect for a short break with our family and dog."

  Tracy, the owner, was friendly and helpful, both on the phone before our arrival and when checking that everything had been OK on our departure day. We had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay. The only thing that puzzled us for a while was the dial settings on the oven. The writing has worn away, so it was a guessing game for a while. We worked out where to position the knobs to get a hot oven, took a photo, and then went with that each time we used it after that. Certainly this didn't effect the quality of our stay. The adjoining oaddock was wonderful for walking the dog and you are truly surrounded by the countryside as soon as you step out of the front door. A very much recommended cottage.

• "We received excellent communication from the owners prior to arrival, with directions and key access details."

  The property was clean, warm and well equipped. The only thing we felt was missing was a small dishwasher as the sink was very small and made washing up a little difficult but it certainly didn't detract from our enjoyment. The village was small and very quiet but was within easy access of Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would recommend the cottage.

  Cottage was well set out and big enough for 4 persons. Cottage decor needs to be freshened up to keep this a high standard property. Areas of the kitchen require work, and some areas of the cottage were not as clean as they could have been.

  We felt property would be best suited for summer months not winter. Heating very limited, large radiator needed in place of sideboard in living room and fitted carpet needed. Kitchen had everything you wanted but mismatched furniture let it down. However the tea, coffee, milk and bread a nice touch.

• "A last minute booking for two couples and one dog, 3 nights over New Year."

  Communication leading up to our stay was great with messages arriving with details for check-in times and key collection. On arrival we found the cottage beautifully clean and not only did we have a basic staple food supply (bread, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, beans) but had been left a lovely card and box of chocolates! Our priority after unpacking was to take our dog out. The paddocks were perfect, a huge area to play ball which was totally safe and enclosed with no one else around. It was also good to have the small enclosed garden to let him out last thing without having to walk down the field in the dark (and the rain!). The beds were really comfortable and it was lovely for each couple to have our own en-suite shower rooms - the body jets were fantastic! The kitchen was extremely well equipped for self catering, a good supply of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans and utensils. Only one very small suggestion that would have benefitted our stay - the music system was in the bedroom so wasn’t used, it would have been nice to have had that downstairs? In short, everything we needed under one roof, thanks to the team at Primitive Mews, you made our New Year!

• "We have just returned from a week’s stay at this beautiful cottage."

  It had everything we needed - reclining chairs, a 60” tv!, beautiful Denby crockery to use in the kitchen, the beds were soooo comfortable, the showers were wonderful with body jets hitting aching parts! The cottage is in a very central area to enjoy Derbyshire - lovely scenery to view before hitting the main roads. Although the weather wasn’t great we planned our days accordingly. The Great British Car Journey recently opened in Ambergate is a must to see on a rainy -with a lovely cafe and reasonably priced meals. Would thoroughly recommend this little gem of a cottage

  The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and full of character with a well-equipped kitchen, the welcome pack (bread, milk, biscuits, beans, etc) was a thoughtful touch. The adjoining paddock, with perfectly mowed pathways was great for our little dog who loved to run off the lead safely. The Church Inn was a short uphill walk, but well worth it for the excellent service, food, and wonderful views too! Communication with Tracey was spot on and much appreciated. All in all a perfect stay which we thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend without hesitation.

  We enjoyed the adjacent meadows that belonged to the cottage. Good safe parking. No shop in the village, but Tesco extra 3 miles away in petrol station outside Buxton was useful. Good local pub within walking distance. It seemed like there were no Re-cycling facilities in the village, so brought it home.

  The garden furniture is poor and some of the furniture is very old fashioned. The couple staying with us said the bed was very noisy and not very comfortable but Tracy was very accommodating and did what she could to make it better so no problem there. We loved the area and as a couple would definitely recommend it as long as you are aware some TLC is needed. On the whole it was a lovely stay in a lovely area with a very good pub within walking distance but we have stayed in nicer cottages.

• "Stayed here in July for one week , as we opened the door the first thing that greeted us was the smell of damp, it was the worst cottage we have stayed in, we had to wash some of the pots and pans before we could use them, the garden was not pleasant to sit in as it was full of weeds with no flowers, the outdoor furniture would suit fire wood."

  The owners are not obviously gardeners but a little time spent would go along way. The cottage needs a lot of care and attention.There is also a children’s play area but that was also full of weeds and is certainly not safe for a child to play on. As we left we took the quilt covers off the single beds and we were taken back as the colour of them were yellow. The best thing about the cottage was the location, a lovely village pub and great for getting to other beautiful local areas.

• "We have been visiting the Peak District for some 45 years, but had never been to Chelmorton before."

  We had an excellent week at 2 Primitive Mews, it suited our requirements perfectly. This is a homely country cottage, really cosy, with its thick stone walls; it is part of a barn conversion – the original building is ancient: look out for the Devil Stones, projecting from the exterior walls, to ward off evil spirits. It is very comfortable (nice reclining leather armchairs and sofa). It is quiet, well equipped, with good storage space, it has ample off-road parking and it is surrounded by good walking country. It's very professionally managed (you will receive a text message with the key code when the cottage has been made up, this came soon after 2pm). It's also conveniently near to Buxton, which has good food shopping. We were particularly impressed by the range of tableware and kitchen utensils. There are pasta bowls, serving spoons, champagne flutes as well as wine glasses, proper coffee cups as well as mugs; kitchen scales, mixing bowls, plenty of baking trays, lots of kitchen tools; this is much better attention to detail than most cottages provide! Giant plasma screen, trouser-press and body-jet showers we can live without; but having two shower rooms is a real plus. Other thoughtful details – memory foam overlay on the mattresses, choice of firm or soft pillows... Suggestions for small improvements that would make a big difference: a non-slip mat under the microwave; a clothes hook on the inside of each shower room door; a printed diagram of the oven settings, which are worn and difficult to read. NB ONE IMPORTANT POINT: The directions for finding the cottage are designed for visitors travelling from the South. If travelling from the North on the A6 you approach the village by a different road, Common Lane; at the village, turn right and Primitive Mews is on the right, the opposite to the directions given!

• "Cottage was quite comfortable but not as clean as previous cottages although because of the covid virus we would have expected a more thorough clean."

  Instructions for using utensils etc hidden away in a cupboard over the oven. Very basic utensils only 4 of everything! No welcome package although not necessary it has always been there at all our previous cottages and always appreciated. No dishwasher - which was listed on original description. Although not up to usual standard we still enjoyed our break x lovely village and great dog walks

No where in our information has a dishwasher being listed. We advertise and provide a welcome pack of Tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, beans, bread and milk. • "No 2 Primitive Cottages was exactly that - primitive!"

  Considering the owners have had lockdown to revamp the facilities we found it rundown and grubby. There was mould in the bathroom shower in the tile work. There was accumulated dust everywhere. The area surrounding refuse bin in kitchen was dirty, the bin did not work and cutlery draw runner broken. We didn’t use all china but found mug chipped. Only 1 toilet roll provided, stingy. A tin of beans, cheap sliced white bread and biscuits are no-one’s idea of a welcome pack!! Better not to have one at all!

Ideal location for touring around the lovely dales. My weather was lovely all week, so saw the dales through sunglasses. Great time, would go again.

  Bedrooms were spacious and both en suite which was great. Small secure garden for the dog, and enclosed private paddock was perfect for training! Village was lovely and quiet. Would definitely stay again.

  The welcome pack was a nice touch. The meadow to walk the dog in the morning was a real bonus especially as the weather was very changeable during our week. The church inn was a complete bonus with great food and friendly staff and locals. Just one tip take slippers the ground floor stone floors look lovely but are a bit chilly on the feet

• "Discussion with Tracy about time of entry - despite being advertised as 3pm, initially told 5pm until I objected and advised would be ready at 3pm."

  Well equipped, but tired looking and very disappointed with the garden area. Obviously not been touched since winter - piles of leaves under/around dirty children’s climbing frame, broken slab stones, dandelions along building and in pots containing dead shrubs, and less than clean artificial grass (particularly as it had obviously been used by dogs! Garden furniture needed some TLC. One of the bedroom windows had opaque glass and very difficult to open. Certainly not the best/best value cottage I have stayed in, but access to field for the dog very useful. I don’t want these comments published, but believe they should be fed back to owner.

  The welcome pack is a lovely touch. We have stayed in No 1 previously, and must admit in both properties a few things could be upgraded. The oven is a bit hit and miss. But we did enjoy our stay and Chelmorton is a pretty Village with an excellent Pub serving really good good at reasonable prices and they have a quiz night and all are welcome.

  Be aware there is effectively no mobile phone signal here. Also the tv reception is limited to about 20 freeview channels however there is a large library of dvds. We eat twice at the local pub. Recommended really good food but do book. The pub is very small. There is good walking from the door. You can download some walks from the pub web site. Buxton is a short drive away. Pretty run down town. Not much there except the opera house. Bakewell and Castleton are reasonable close and good bases for walking

• "We visited with our dog in September, we always try to find somewhere peaceful and with a pub in walking distance and this was perfect."

  The cottage was warm cosy and very comfortable. Quirky blend of old and new furnishings but all clean and tidy which was more important. One of the major advantages was the huge paddock area where we could let the dog off to run free as for some reason she didn't like the astro turf!!!! Like a similar reviewer we had problems with cooker but nothing we couldn't get round. Bumped into the owner who was very helpful and made us very welcome. The only point I would make is to get the photos on the website updated, the main bedroom looks so much better now and the picture of a cupboard showing the welcome goodies was not really a selling point. I would have rather seen more pictures of the paddock area - a much better selling point. Overall a great time away, good value for money and would come back.

  The location is good. Plenty of care parking and it’s very private. Dog walking facilities are excellent. Garden needs to be tidied lots of dead leaves and twigs over lawn area. The B/Q was rusty and a bit of a wreck. I don’t think the cottage deserve 4 ticks. We rented primative Croft last year which was a much better standard. ************************** Owner response ********************** We spoke with the guests at the time and no issues were raised during their stay which we would have endeavoured to resolve if had known. 2 Primitive Mews is country cottage like. Croft is angular modern leather sofas and are of different style. They are not old and run down. The first time a BBQ is used and it is second hand. The rear garden is laid in synthetic grass to give a long term smart appearance. We are sorry that you experienced these issues and take onboard your comments.

• "We stayed at Primitive Mews for a long weekend as a family of four."

  The location was perfect as a base for visiting both Buxton and Bakewell and there's loads to do within a short drive. The cottage itself is lovely. Well furnished and homely. Comfy beds and warm! Lots of nice touches like a welcome pack, information file about the local area and lots of DVDs for unwinding at night. We went to the local pub for a meal on the Saturday night. It was ok but nothing special. It's within an easy 10 minutes walk of the cottage though, otherwise it would be a drive into Buxton for alternatives. Would definitely recommend staying here and we would book again if returning to the area.
