  • "Great cottage and very comfortable."

Photos did not do it justice, it was much nicer even that we had imagined. Location is absolutely excellent for exploring a large area of the Peak District with many many brilliant places within a half hour drive. Lots of lovely walking from the front door too. We'd seen other reviews complaining about the cottage being on a main road. We stayed during a working week and really didn't find it an issue. The only negative we'd find is that parking in the allocated spaces can be a bit of an issue - we did have to ask people in the chip shop to move a couple of times as there is no alternative place to park. Perhaps something for the owners to take up with the chip shop directly. Otherwise no complaints and would definitely stay again.

  • "Fantastic property and the attention to detail was first class."

A great open living area to socialise with well appointed bedrooms and bathrooms. The location in the village is great to access the local area but the property is on the main road. This was no problem at all for us but if you opened a window it was very noisy!

Plenty of bathrooms. Overall the cottage has a quality finish

  • "This was an old but very clean property in a great location in the Peak District."

Very creaky floors which I guess is to be expected for its age. Nice really well equipped high spec kitchen but both fridges and the freezer were difficult to open as they weren’t fixed in the housing of the fitted kitchen. The busy road right outside the house was very noisy and meant that windows could not really be open especially at night (it was hot on floor 1 and ground floor) and it was not possible to use the garden comfortably to relax due to the noise of heavy traffic passing by constantly. 3 private parking spaces allocated to the property were not guaranteed to be available to use for 5 days of our stay due to being used by customers visiting the fish and chip shop opposite. This caused problems for our 3 car party. This issue was mentioned in an email but only after booking and payment. Bedrooms a good size (main en-suite bedroom ground floor door impossible to close). Beds comfortable and clean. Lots of bedroom cupboard space and bathrooms very nicely done. I’m sure plenty of others will enjoy and have enjoyed a lovely time here and we were okay but for the price point I think there are simple maintenance improvements that could be made and the noisy road/parking issues should be mentioned before any payment is made as this could be a dealbreaker for those seeking peace and quiet.

  • "Beautiful house with excellent amenities."

Very spacious and clean inside and a lot of thought has gone into making sure that everthing that could be needed is provided, in the kitchen particularly. The only criticism and it’s not of the house, is the busyness of the road outside. We normally have windows open at night but had to close them because of the noise. Not a deal breaker or anything owners can do but it is a busy road… Great location for walking, has decent pub just down the road, amazing fish and chip shop (the smallest cutest one) across the road and fabulous Indian (Curry Cottage) 2 minutes down the road. We had a great stay

  • "No hairdryers."

Impossible to contact Sykes Cottages organisation either by phone, text or email. I wonder how guests would ask for advice or help during their stay in a Sykes property.

Thanks for the suggestion about hairdryers, which we’ve acted on: as of last weekend (11/12 May 2024) there are now two brand-new hairdryers in the house for guest use. Sorry to hear you had difficulty getting in touch with Sykes. We’ve always found them to be pretty responsive but asked them if they had any record of you trying to contact them. They said they had received a message from you via web messaging, and that they replied via the same channel, but didn’t hear further from you. Perhaps there was a network/internet issue? Anyway, thank you for the feedback and we hope you enjoyed a good stay despite these points, and we hope you’ll be back in future. Property Owner

The property

Settled in the village of Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire in the Peak District National Park is 3 Royal Oak Mews.

This charming stone-fronted cottage was once a pub and now benefits from off-road parking, four spacious bedrooms, private patio with barbecue and a homely open-plan living space welcoming up to eight guests.

After exploring the wealth of surrounding attractions, climb the stairs to the first floor to unwind in the sitting room in front of the TV or whip up a hearty meal in the fully-equipped kitchen that the whole group can enjoy around the dining table.

If the sun is shining, head down the stairs to delight in an alfresco affair on the decking or fire up the barbecue as the sun sets over the countryside.

When yawning begins, wash away the day in the shower room before retiring to one of four well-appointed bedrooms; choose from a king-size on the ground-floor or descend to the lower-ground-floor to find a double with en-suite cloakroom, a double and a twin.

Spend the days exploring the surrounding villages, pay a visit to the Eyam Boundary Stone to learn about Eyam’s sacrificial quarantine during the 1665 plague before travelling to its heart to explore the craft centre in the National Trust site of Eyam Hall and Eyam Museum.

Outdoor enthusiasts can venture to the nearby Curbar and Baslow Edge, both hiking areas with panoramic views across the rolling countryside; travel further afield to climb Wardlow Hay Cop, Lord’s Seat or Parkhouse Hill.

Families can traverse Chatsworth House with its expansive art collection, playground, farmyard and acres of stunning grounds or find the famed theme park of Alton Towers with a myriad of rides and attractions as well as a waterpark; a brilliant way to spend the day!

Adventure awaits at 3 Royal Oak Mews.

About the location

STONEY MIDDLETON

Eyam 1.5 miles; Bakewell 5.5 miles; Chapel-en-le-Frith 14 miles.

The lovely village of Stoney Middleton is set in between some spectacular Derbyshire scenery, with Middleton Dale just beyond and the fantastic Froggatt Edge very close by. The village is surrounded by some of the prettiest countryside in the Peak District, including The Dale which provides some wonderful rock climbing, cycling and walks following the medieval packhorse track; known locally as Jacobs Ladder this can be walked from the centre of the village passing through Stoney woods and provides wonderful views of Curbar and Froggatt Edge in the distance. Stoney Middleton has an interesting past including the story of heartbroken young Hannah Baddaley who is said to have jumped from Lover’s Leap, at the top of Middleton Dale, after being spurned by her love. A visit to Eyam, just northwest of Stoney Middleton, is a must to see how parts of the village have been kept as they looked several centuries ago, such as the plague cottages, the church and Eyam Hall, a beautiful 17th century manor house with delightful gardens, craft shops and tea rooms. Above the village lies Eyam Moor, a fine area for walking, with fantastic views across the Derwent Valley, with its many Bronze Age remains and monuments. Visit Bakewell, a picturesque market town which holds a market every Monday and the home of the world famous Bakewell Pudding. Explore the mysterious caverns of Castleton, the elegant spa town of Buxton or enjoy the many stately homes on offer such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, to mention a few. With Alton Towers, Britain's premier theme park, only a short drive away, this is an ideal base for all the family.
