"We found the Hall to be spacious and comfortable for our party of ten."
The large lounge and dining room were great for our evening get together as a group where we could all eat and socialise as one.
The internet was not working on arrival, but I found the owner to be communicative and helpful in getting the problem fixed as soon as possible.
The dish washer in the kitchen had a fault but as there was a second machine in the utility room, this was not too much of a problem for our group.
We would certainly stay again at this lovely building.

"The photos don't do this place justice."
It is absolutely perfect for a big group get together or extended families. It is an old house and the layout and features sometimes show this, but honestly we found it charming. Having a massive lounge, dining room, games room and TV room made it easy to accommodate everyone and it would be great for hosting an event like a birthday or something while you are there. Really enjoyed it and the peaceful surroundings, although still close enough to take a walk into town. Great place to stay.

"We had a fabulous weekend at Ridge Hall."
The size of the property doesn’t quite come across on the listing….. the space meant everyone had the space they needed over the weekend - the kids loved the snug and the PlayStation whilst the adult relaxed by the fire in the Lounge.
All the bedrooms were a good size and again the photos didn’t quite show the actual size of them. Lots of comfy beds and enough showers for everyone! The house was warm all weekend and the lovely Aga in the kitchen meant you could quickly warm up after a wet and windy walk! The old features of the house were amazing and the quirky layout meant there were a few fun games of hide and seek for kids and adults!
The location is beautiful and lovely to be able to step out the door and head out for an explore.

It has fantastic character and the Christmas decorations really added to the lovely atmosphere. There was plenty of space for us all, great to have separate living spaces, especially the games room and snooker table. Really well equipped, we really appreciated 2 dish washers and the washing machines and driers. It was lovely and warm and (apart from one) super comfy beds. The grounds looked great, sadly the weather didn't allow us to take advantage of them or the spectacular views!! Loved the dining room but we were very squashed round the table, really it only comfortably seated 12 ( and we had 2 very little ones). We were also surprised to be asked to strip the beds in departure as we assumed this would be included !. A couple of other suggestions, there were loads of logs but they were all very damp so fire lighting was a challenge. One mattress, in the bunk/twin room was very worn and uncomfortable, we temporarily swapped it from the attic room. I

"Property listed as having oil central heating but it is a bio mass boiler which didn't work, could not be repaired and as a consequence the building was mostly cold."
Warmth was provided by two solid fuel room heaters which needed to be constantly fed with bagged coal (dirty to use) or wood which was stored nearby and had to be barrowed to the house.
This was a very stressful event for both the guests and me.
Unfortunately the heat pump for the boiler failed and the heating was fed by gravity to the radiators which meant they were unreliable at best. Guests had heating intermittently during the stay
I apologised profusely for the situation, explained that it was impossible to mend the boiler at such short notice and compensated the guests.
Since the guests stay the heat pump has been replaced, the heating system has been fully serviced and the heating and water are fully functioning.

It has plenty of space not to feel crowded, there were 14 in our group and it never felt anywhere near full! The dining room table was our gathering place and easily sat us all together. The kitchen, with its beautiful Aga, is probably the best equipped for large gatherings we’ve ever used. Ample fridge and freezer space and every pot, pan and utensil you could need! Lots of space to relax in. Pool table and puzzles appreciated! We were provided with ample logs for the downstairs log burners which kept it lovely and warm in the lounge and dining room. I would suggest that the directions could be a little clearer - it is definitely out in the sticks and we ended up at a nearby farm ( where we were pointed in the right direction!). Also it can get pretty cold in some of the bedrooms… typical I guess of an older , rambling house like this. All in all we had a lovely stay and I would recommend.

Property clearly has significant through put and is showing signs of wear - entrance hall in particular needs a deep clean of tiles and carpet. Description imprecise in that it is not clear that the property forms part of a collection of buildings and the significant amount of surrounding land that is identified is not accessible. Also it should be indicated that the direct access to Chapel en le Frith station indicated in the description is not possible by vehicle - 6 of our party arrived with luggage to the station. Instructions for access to the house are unclear and the track leading to the property is not labelled from the road - a GPS reference would be useful. We had a couple of very minor issues (we couldn't work the front door lock or the keypad! a couple of chest of drawer handles came off, and we found a couple of things left by previous guests). "The property ticked the boxes in terms of size and description."
However, the grounds were not at all as described - 6 acres maybe, but 1.5 acres max were accessible. the rest was inaccessible as it was completely overgrown. We spoke to the gardener and he was hard working and wanted to do a better job but he was given a completely inadequate budget to be able to keep anything other than the grass cut on the lawns within the 1.5 acres. He had been able to cut the paddock once at the beginning of the season - access to the woods is through the paddock. However, we understand that even if we had got to the woods, it is wild and not been maintained. The property was also only surface cleaned - the dust and general grime was visible in pipes behind sinks and toilets etc.
This property is really expensive and is not at all value for money. So we had enough to mean our big group had a good holiday but we felt ripped off. We had a two week holiday and our other property in the Cotswolds was half the price, but much better maintained and value for money.
Many thanks for your feedback and we are pleased to hear you enjoyed Ridge Hall. There are 1.5 acres of manicured lawns in the garden, then a paddock at the back that leads into the forest. The owner is strimming a pathway through the forest for guest's to use at their owner risk as there are two steams in the forest with a 30 foot drop in areas, therefore not suitable for children.

"Ridge Hall Holiday
We booked Ridge Hall to enable our two families to get together for the first time since lock down started in March."
One member of our family was shielding due to a serious medical condition and two of us had been self-isolating due to age. It was important to find a place which would give us enough inside and outside space to isolate as a group without having to leave the property should we feel it necessary to do so. The description of the outside space on the web site and I quote “ Extensive lawned gardens including 6-acres of woodland, gravelled areas and furniture”, was exactly what we were looking for.
Firstly we would like to say that we found Ridge Hall to be a delightful place in a lovely location. There was plenty of space within the house to accommodate our two families. The layout was a little strange at first but we soon got our heads around it. All bedrooms were spacious with good access to bathrooms. We found the bunk beds would only really be suitable for younger children given the size, this was not too much of a problem for us as we had a choice of other beds so did not use the bunks. Living rooms were large and comfortable.
The kitchen area was rather strange at first but again we got used to it and it worked well for us. The AGA was something none of us had ever used before however, it worked well for us.
We could not find any clear access to the 6 acre woodland, so asked Mark the owner if we were missing something. Mark gave us directions and informed us that the woodland was not suitable for children due to there being steep drops of up to 10 metres. My son in law and myself went to investigate the access point.
We were told to go through the back paddock and into a gate to the right. Just in front of the gate there was the remains of a bonfire which contained broken bottles, bits of wire and metal. This was in an open area where the children and dogs had access to.( We discovered this on our first day so had to ensure they, children and dogs, were kept away from it.)
The paddock itself was roughly mown and full of thistle stalks and stinging nettles. It was not an area that could be used by either adults or children. The gate which led to the woodland access was extremely difficult to open. Inside the gate there were piles of loose rubble, some moss covered and slippery. This led up to the boundary wall . We managed to get to the wall and look over, trying to see if there was any access point to the woods. There was not. We were unable to investigate further, as the thistles and nettles were almost five feet in height and some eight to ten feet in depth.
The conclusion to our search was that the paddock and the woodland was not accessible to us in any way as an amenity space. So one of the main reasons we chose Ridge Hall, was not available to us. Six acres is a huge space , access would have made a huge difference to our holiday. We feel that the property description was very misleading.
The grounds and stable block were described as follows:- “The grounds impress equally with stables, lawns and extensive woodlands, and bikes and other equipment can be locked in the stables.” Difficult to find a space for bikes in the stables, lots of other stuff in there.
As a reputable holiday letting service we would like to know if your inspection of the property prior to putting it on your site led you to believe the 6 acres was in fact accessible in any way? We would also like to know if you make any further inspections, to ensure the product you are promoting is in fact accurately presented in a condition that is described on your site.
There were numerous other things which call into question the description by Sykes , “ No expense has been spared to create a stunningly beautiful residence very reminiscent of a five star stately country hotel” and your 5 Tick rating. We feel that whilst Ridge Hall is a lovely place, it is more faded elegance than 5 star country hotel. None of these were significant separately but cumulatively they made a difference. I list some of these things below:-
Food left in freezer. Given the issues with Covid 19 this was not acceptable.
Food left in cupboards. As above re Covid 19.
Taps in the cloakroom, one handle missing the other cracked and broken.
Cupboard doors missing in the kitchen which showed all the plastic drainage piping behind.
Trough on the patio which had been used as a communal ashtray and contained loads of cigarette ends. Again, given the Covid 19 situation this was not acceptable.
Loose stones on the edge of the patio. As these overhung the edge they tipped if stood on.
Toilet brushes in all bathrooms really should be replaced, they are without exception past their best , stained and just look awful.
Sky package. Clearly states in header review on your site “Having a full Sky package with sport and movies was a lovely surprise”. This was not available to us, just Freeview via a Sky box.
Hand rail on the back staircase. We had to clean this prior to use, very dirty.
Bedding. When stripping beds we discovered significant staining evident on some pillow covers, duvets etc. Not “5 star” in any way. Should have been replaced really.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. It is not meant to be. We are just trying to point out to you, the letting agent, our disappointment given the expectation we had from reading your description of the property. We have paid a significant sum of money for our weeks holiday, but feel rather let down.
We did email your customer service department nearly two weeks ago but sadly have not had a response. We are therefore left with no choice but to complete the feedback form.
We await your response.
Sincere regards,
Chris Simms

We had an issue with the fridge not working when we arrived. Took a little bit of sorting out and a bit of inconvenience having to use the fridge in another of the owners properties, but Jo was very helpful and we got 2 new fridges delivered within a few days. Other than that fantastic. Everyone loved it there. Ideal too as it was peaceful for those who wanted a bit of quiet time. Great for walks. We loved the walk down the lane to the railway station. Weather for us was very wet so we didn't get out as much in the garden or for longer walks but there are walks nearby. Despite the weather the good thing was the space to escape to if anyone wanted to in the Hall. If not to gather together. Pool table was always in use. We liked the separate smaller area to eat too. "Positives Beautiful house in lovely location."
Lots of space. Comfortable beds. Pool table was much appreciated. Leak in bathroom was repaired very promptly and at our convenience.
Negatives Although there are plenty of bathrooms your shower will stop working if someone else tries to use one at the same time. Shortage of storage in most of the bedrooms. There’s hanging space, but not many drawers so you may need to live out of your suitcase. Not a major problem.
Be aware. This is a six bedroom house really suitable for up to 12 adults or maybe 10 with up to 6 children. The bunk bedded area is a landing at the top of stairs from one of the four posters (no door). The light switch for the second floor shower room, serving the four bedded attic room, is in the bunk bedded area which isn’t good for privacy for occupants of the four poster. The only cooker is an Aga (not necessarily a negative). The house is in a cluster of other houses. You are not aware of them, but the owner is right to emphasise that this is not a “party house”. There’s a lovely 10 minute walk down to the station in Chapel-en-le-Frith, but the lane is not suitable for cars. It takes longer to drive there via narrow lanes than to walk.

"The accommodation worked very well for a large family group over 3 generations."
An unpredictable issue with the boiler was resolved effectively.
The kitchen is well equipped with crockery, pots and pans and cutlery, but would benefit from items such as kitchen scales, measuring jugs and spoons etc for groups that enjoy cooking together.

"We had an amazing week at Ridge Hall."
The hall is really spacious and the rooms are all extremely comfortable. It's location is perfect for exploring the Peak District and the local village of Comb is delightful.
