  • "Flat was cozy , warm and spacious."

Village is pretty with a little river running across it. Church bells go every 30minutes but it didn’t bother us. Sadly , village seemed to have been deserted. It was supposed to be lively with shops , tearooms , pubs … however the shops and tearooms were either closed or “for sale” . Pub opposite flat didn’t serve food and looked very uninviting for families. It didn’t matter to us as we were out and about all day and then cooking at the flat . There were some housekeeping issues that if addressed would make place nicer . Front door lock is temperamental as well as the hot water taps . Bath taps are loose as well as the work top behind kitchen sink. There were only 3 forks available for a place that caters for 4 people . It would have been useful to have serving spoons and serving dishes, colander , potato masher , bread knife , jug . It was a nice surprise to find dog bowls in the kitchen and a couple of games inside the ottoman pouffe in the living room. It would be nice to have blackout blinds as very bright in the morning. There is no loo brush . There are 15 bright spotlights on the living room ceiling . It would be nice if they were dimmable. Bedding could be of a better quality. Mattresses and pillows are overdue replacement in our opinion… we could feel some of the springs from mattresses… however we all slept well after long days out and about . It was very nice to get back in the warmth of the flat at the end of day . Not possible to have a bath though, as hot water kept running cold on and off … so pointless. Shower head was a pain … not much water coming out … no water pressure .. Extract fan in bathroom hasn’t been dusted in a long while . The area outside flat could do with some cleaning and tidying up. Someone left a pile of cigarette buds on the floor by the front door. As a dog walker who always clean up after my dog , I was disgusted to come across a lot of dog mess around the village , left behind by lazy people . Despite the points raised above , we had a lovely stay at Howard’s hideaway …but with some TLC it could be much better.

  • "Comfortable, well furnished apartment."

Very good position right in the centre of Hayfield. Kitchen was to me a bit limited, but as I am a keen cook it was no real surprise. There was an issue with the heating when I arrived but when I rang the owners they came round very quickly and sorted it out.

  • "Howard's Hideaway is a nice flat and the hosts very helpful if you ask for anything."

It has everything you need: good WiFi, well stocked kitchen, a warm shower, and the rarest of features for Sykes' cottages - storage space in the kitchen. The pics don't show it, but my favourite part was watching the river from the kitchen window, complete with occasional Grey Wagtail. It's a treat to be able to circular-walk some of the UK's most famous (& popular) routes without having to worry about parking. However, light sleepers should bring earplugs just in case - you get Church bells in the front bedroom, and a recircing boiler in the back.

  • "Lovely flat in the middle of the village, noisy with traffic going through from very early in the morning and the church clock striking."

Pans for cooking very small if you were feeding four people. Hot water in sink not very hot but shower was lovely. We had problem with cigarette smoke but we think this turned out to be people passing and smoking and waiting outside the shop and we had all the windows open.

  • "We love Hayfield and the flat was very conveniently situated."

The living/dining room was comfortable and the heating was very effective. However, the beds were not very comfortable ; they were definitely small doubles. Imaginative use of space for "wardrobes" .The kitchen was compact but the cooker was very efficient. My only complaint would be the lack of pots/pans etc no trays for in the oven, nor serving dishes/casseroles.
