  • "We had a fantastic stay in Dunira - a lovely comfortable cottage in a great village location."

The property was really clean and little touches, like a pint of milk in the fridge were really welcome. Falkland itself was great, especially loved discovering some of the walks around Falkland Estate. We may well be back!

  • "Dunira is a lovely property in the most picturesque surroundings."

It was probably the best equipped house we have ever stayed and we have been in quite a few over the years. It is very tastefully decorated and furnished in keeping with the age of the house. Falkland is a delightful town which has escaped modernisation. There are lovely independent shops and of course the palace is a must see. If walking is your thing there’s plenty around without having to use the car. Further afield the coastal villages and towns on the Fife coast are also very pretty. Kellie castle and Hill of Tarvit are NTS properties not far away. The house was warm and cosy but if it was in the winter months it could be difficult to keep the droughts at bay in the living room as there are no doors between it and the kitchen. Apart from that top marks to the owners they have a lovely little house.

Hi Julie, Thank you so much for your review, and scores. It's very much appreciated.
We have had the front door fitted with draft excluder, we have a separate draft excluder for placing at the base of the front door, and a curtain to pull over the door, helping keep Dunira cosy in the winter months. There is also the additional benefit of the wood burner in the living room.

It was absolutely spotless when we got there and there was even a little gift waiting for us as newlyweds which was so lovely! My husband is over 6ft tall but was still comfortable walking around upstairs in the eves. The bed was comfortable and bed sheets were lush too (I actually had a snoop at what brand they were so I could purchase some!) We had the log burner on most nights and made use of the beautiful bath tub - it’s a stunning feature! Parking was a dream and there was lots to do in the village! Helen’s Bakery do AMAZING pies and breakfast sandwiches, and Campbells was lovely for lunch! Falkland Palace was a stones throw from Dunira and we spent a lovely couple of hours there wandering about. We drove to Ladybank to catch the train into Edinburgh as we were told it was a pain to park in Edinburgh. The train was only an hour and was £20 return for both of us. We also drove to Glenrothes to have a mooch round the shopping centre and do a bit of food shopping (there’s Aldi, Marks and Spencer, Asda etc). We will absolutely be booking another stay in the summer!

  • "Dunira is a quaint cottage in a lovely town."

When we arrived the cottage was cold. I put on the heating and turned up the thermostat. After 24 hours with little improvement I contacted the owner who advised to do what we had already done. Downstairs never really warmed up. The kitchen heater is only lukewarm, the living room one a little warmer. We resorted to putting on the oven to warm the kitchen in order to have breakfast in the morning. The fire in the living room at night was a necessity. Upstairs was very cosy as those heaters became hot. Cleaning could be improved. The living room rug was covered in dog hair and the throw smelt more like a dog blanket. Falkland is a lovely town and a great base for exploring the Kingdom of Fife. Unfortunately, I could not recommend Dunira for a break in colder weather.

We’re sorry to hear you found Dunira on the cold side. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, as the welfare, and comfort of our guests is paramount. The guests after you found Dunira warm enough. We’re at Dunira later this month, and have arranged for an engineer to check over the heating system, when carrying out our gas safety check. We’ve passed on your comments about the carpet, and throw, to our cleaners, who will act on this accordingly. All the best, Nick Property Owner

Great garden area which is a suntrap too. Our dog enjoyed ball games and saying hello to the passing visitors from the window in the ruined cottage garden. We liked the quirkiness of the cottage, our only suggestion would be to add some grip strips to that steep and twisting staircase, before a slip & trip occurs. Falkland is a really beautiful village, it is quiet overall, but the quietness is punctuated throughout the day by groups of visiting tourists, which adds a buzz of excitement. A village deli, bakery, convenience shop, 3 pubs and multiple gift shops, the Palace and Falkland Estate provided all that we needed. A good central base too for exploring Fife's countryside, lochs, beaches, towns and cities.

Very clean and well thought out design. Large kitchen is well equipped, cosy living room with great log burner. Lots of storage space for a small cottage. The garden is wonderful and really pretty against the backdrop of the old house walls. Such a handy location for the deli for morning takeout coffees and the Covenanter for an early evening drink. Lots of local walks and a short drive to the coast. Parking works really well, was concerned that the car park would get full, but we always found a space easily and there is enough space to stop outside the house for 5 mins to load and unload the car on arrival/ departure. Would recommend, excellent value. Wish we lived nearer! As would love to visit again.

Lovely comfortable cottage with a kitchen that was really appreciated. Had family over for lunches and dinners and never felt stressed. Comfortable bed for good nights sleeps, warm and controllable heating (we found 16-18'c on the start was perfect) and an incredible bath that I thought I was going to need to need arm bands! Stunning village, increadable walks on the door step and no issue with taking our little dog into The Stag pH. You have to do the Waterfall Walk which is especially stunning during and after heavy rain. Village bakers, convenience store, greengrocers, cafe's, hotels and pubs and yet only 15mins to Glenrothes for big shops if you want. Also recommend the walk from St. Monans to Anstruther for fish and chip lunch, and the walk back to pick your car up again to burn off the calories. Just remember to take your walking shoes with you everywhere, you'll regret it otherwise. So settled there, we already booked to come back in February. Truly a lovely break, thank you Dunira.

The cottage is very cute with lots of charm and quirks. So comfortable and cozy. Bumped our heads a couple of times upstairs, but that was just not paying attention while tired. I had read that some people complained about the tub and shower situation. If you love a nice hot bath you will love this set up as we did. And we NEVER ran out of hot water like we would in the states. Enjoyed hearing the clock tower chime, thought it would would wake us up but it didn't. Pleasant sounding. Then in the morning hearing the birds chirping was just perfect. We had the windows open all night. We didn't plan for such warm weather this time of year. September was 16-17C. Dear Linda, Thank you for your review, and for pointing out that Dunira is a nice cottage in a great area. It is unfortunate that you have chosen to give Dunira such a low score. As you can see from our other reviews this is not the norm for our lovely property. There is a picture of the bath on the Sykes website. We find it to be easily accessible and not slippery, however taking precautions when entering or exiting is always wise. The stairs are also shown on the Sykes website. They are painted in a high quality floor paint, which we feel provides ample grip. The layout of the stairs is clearly shown on the Sykes website, and a little more research on your part would have made you aware that some aspects of Dunira would not be suitable for you. Dunira is, after all, an old and quirky cottage. As explained, following several texts, we do not have a washing line in the garden. We have a folding clothes dryer in the washing machine cupboard which can be taken outside. A quick search would have revealed this. The washing up bowl, and drainer, were in the kitchen corner cupboard, and again a quick search would have revealed them. We don’t know why they were in this cupboard, but our cleaners found them within minutes of entering Dunira, after your departure. The cottage is professionally cleaned after each guest’s stay, and we can only apologise for any dog hairs left on the lounge rug. I did try to sort out your confusion over what you thought was a cleaning / breakage deposit, which was in fact the Sykes booking fee. It might have helped if you’d had a clearer understanding of what you’d paid Sykes for. All the best, Nick Property Owner

We immediately felt like we were home when we arrived. The kitchen is beautiful and we were surprised to see was stocked with many things we thought we would need to run out and buy. Fires in the living room every evening. The house was very warm and wifi worked in every room which was important as we were both working every day. The bed was very comfortable. But the BEST part, was the bath. There is also a sweet yard but was too cold to use it when we were there. The hosts communicated well with us. The cleaning staff was friendly and efficient. The pictures online 100% are accurate and the value for money based on the cottage and it's amazing location in the middle of town makes this a no brainer. The bed was very comfortable , and the bath worth a soak in. We did not light the log burner but as autumn arrives is ideal for cosy evenings in. There is a small offset area to the sitting room, ideal for a dog, only comment we would make is in other dog friendly cottages we have stayed in, there are some dog items, bowls, treats etc. Also as the downstairs has no doors between sitting room and kitchen,, having a stair gate available for this area might be useful to keep a dog from trying to get upstairs. (Does detract from the lively cottage just a suggestion). The couple of minor issues we found were taken on board by the owners who made contact with us before we arrived. The area were the cottage is located is great with lots of places to see and visit. 100% would return and recommend this cottage.

Dear Guest, It is unfortunate that you've given Dunira such a low score based solely, it would appear, on the shower. We have chosen not to have a shower curtain, as is evident in the Sykes website photos, so as to not detract from the aesthetic look of the bathroom. We have recently made it clear on the Sykes website that the shower is best used in the sitting position, and the reasons why, and we hope this won't in any way affect our future guests enjoyment of Dunira. We lit it nearly every night, even though the cottage was warm, because it was just so cosy! We'd highly recommend a walk to Maspie Den, especially if you've taken your dog like we did! Ending the walk with a meal in The Stag which was delicious, and then a long soak in the beautiful copper bath is just the perfect way to end the day. The cottage had everything we needed, and a great safe garden for the pooch. The bed was so comfortable and it was lovely hearing the church bells in the morning and seeing the spire from the window. Would also point out that it was amazing value at around £300 for the week! We would 100% stay here again and my parents are planning to come next year!

The bed was really comfy and the kitchen was a great size for cooking and eating in. The copper bath was a wee bit of a challenge to get in and out of but apart from that we would definitely stay here again.

  • "Everything about the cottage was good."

It was cosy, comfortable, and we had everything we needed. Weather was atrocious, but that can't be helped. That the cottage was so convenient for everything and was good to come back to and get off our damp muddy things. The palace was still closed at this time of year which was a shame, but there are plenty coffee shops and interesting gift shops to browse round, and the Pillars of Hercules is an amazing place to visit. Just beware leaving your car in the overspill section of the public car park, which I did because the main area was full when I arrived, because I had my car broken into, and though insubstantial items taken, it was non the less stressful and inconvenient in the middle of our holiday.

  • "Beautiful old cottage with so much history attached."

Set right in the centre of the stunning village of falkland. We loved cooking in the fantastic kitchen, relaxing in the huge bath after walking all day and settling down in the cosy living room. The stag inn is a fantastic traditional pub with roaring log fire and food is excellent, also the lomond tavern is great. Both places 2 to 3 minutes walk from the cottage. Anyone staying here will not be disappointed and you will instantly fall in love with this beautiful wee village. The lomond hills are a must as is the coastal path, and falkland estate has lots of lovely walks right on your doorstep, pillars of Hercules farm shop is brilliant and well worth a visit. Thank you.

  • "Lovely cottage right in the heart of a beautiful village."

Walks from your doorstep but also convenient for the Fife Coastal Path and St Andrews. The cottage does have restricted height in the upper floor and a staircase that you would struggle with if you had limited mobility but it does outline that in the description and for us it just added to the character of the building. What was amazing was the large free standing copper bath which was a delight to have a long soak in after a day out walking. And a real fire but the heating alone made the cottage warm and cosy during what turned out to be quite a cold, wet spell of weather. Not all the village is dog friendly but the establishments that are turned out to be very dog friendly. The Stag Inn not only welcomes your pooch but also catered very well for coeliacs. Friendly staff, lovely food and very good value for money. Parking isn't right outside your property but the free car park is just across the road and you can load and unload outside the cottage for a few minutes. It was a pleasure to stay right in the heart of such a stunning village just round the corner from Falkland Palace .... easy to see why Outlander chose the area for filming their tv series. Our staffie loved her holiday just as much as we did and the cottage made an ideal base for us

The food we had in The Lommond was excellent and good value. If you like a wee stroll just walk on past the Violin shop on the High St, Falkland Estate has excellent walks. We can recommend Maspie Den, there are waterfalls, wooden bridges stone steps and lots more to see. The Hub coffee shop serves delicious coffee in a beautiful setting, just perfect to re-energise after your walk. Falkland was a great place to spend a week.

About the location

FALKLAND

Perth 18 miles; St. Andrews 19 miles; Dundee 21 miles.

Falkland is a town and former royal burgh in Fife. The town sits at the foot of the Lomond Hills in beautiful rolling farmland. It is believed that Falkland was inhabited prior to the 12th century, however the village became more prominent following the building of Falkland Castle after 1160. The castle now sits within the grounds of Falkland Palace, the former royal palace of King James IV of Scotland in 1501, and now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Within the palace is the original real tennis court, built in 1539, which is the world’s oldest tennis court still in use. Nearby is the Lomond Hills Regional Park, offering walking with rewarding views, while the Fife coast, with its collection of attractive fishing villages such as Anstruther and Crail, is a must-see. St. Andrews is only a short drive away and with the rugged scenery of the Angus Glens and the cities of Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee all within easy reach, this great location has plenty to offer.
