  • "This was a very comfortable cottage to stay in."

The sofas in the living room and the beds were some of the most comfortable we've had. The galley kitchen was extremely well equipped and had everything we needed. We came with two medium sized dogs and we had plenty of room. Its location is perfect being on the outskirts close to the castle but on 5 minute walk to the centre. The road up to the house is quite narrow so if you have a larger SUV we would suggest approaching the cottage the long way round to make it easier. A very small thing was there was nothing on the front door that let you pull the door closed easily (very minor indeed but was the ONLY thing we thought) Would definitely stay here again. Loved it.

  • "Lovely historic property in a fantastic location on the edge of a great little town."

Elevated, enclosed garden/paddock was ideal for the dog and nice walks straight out of the door were a bonus. Town and beach an easy walk as was access to the coastal path long distance walk. Kitchen was well appointed and living room and bedrooms were more than adequate for our needs. The bathroom was quite small with just a shower and could perhaps have been located in the third bedroom to give more space and perhaps a bath. What might be termed consumables were very much in short supply with only two toilet rolls, a third bottle of washing up liquid and four dishwasher tablets for a 7 night stay. Although just three of us, further supplies had to be bought. Given the history of the property it might be a nice touch to obtain some relevant prints or photographs to display on the walls. It may also be worth noting in description that access for larger vehicles may be difficult. Overall we had a great week and would certainly recommend.

Delighted you had a great week and enjoyed everything Delfryn and Newport has to offer - we love it! When we renovated Delfryn we debated shower room or bathroom and concluded shower room was best and all 5 beds are regularly used - we get very positive feedback on shower pressure! Local photos and prints and photos are already in the pipeline and should be there soon. Look forward to welcoming you back. Property Owner

Great to welcome you back and that you had another lovely stay. Glad you like the new steps and patio and were able to enjoy the views from above Newport. Looking forward to welcoming you again. Property Owner

  • "Unfortunately had to use the feather duster to remove large cobwebs from behind headboard in main bedroom."

Bottom of the wardrobe thick dust incorners,so did not use wardrobe. Also cobwebs behind sofas. Cottage could do with more thorough cleaning in between guests. First cottage we have ever stayed in that did not supply toilet.cleaner and the basic kitchen cleaner. Stair gate on landing is a trip hazard for us older guests.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I'm pleased to say that we now have new made to measure stair gates fitted which match the house and remove the bar across the stairs and hence the trip hazard. I've also spoken to the cleaner to make sure we are on top of cobwebs behind the headboard going forward. Property Owner

  • "The owners have recently modernised to a high, tasteful and comfortable standard, while retaining the cottage's homely ambience."

It is well equipped, we lacked for nothing during our stay. We really appreciate the layout, being able to access via the backdoor after one of the many fine walks in the locality is very helpful. The welcome pack of Welsh Cakes, bread and milk is a kind gesture, and much appreciated. The Info folder is very well thought out and very detailed, really helpful both to those new to this area and those who have been before. We definitely plan to return as both the cottage and its location in Newport is simply so good!

Glad you like the improvements we've made to Delfryn while retaining the character - really positive as you stayed before the refurbishment. Glad you liked the info folder as well - a joint production between Coast and Country and ourselves. Look forward to welcoming you back soon! Property Owner

  • "Delfryn is ideally placed for a brilliant holiday in Newport Pembrokeshire."

The kitchen is well appointed and has everything you need for a week away. The sitting room is comfortable and great to have a good sized TV to watch if the weather is inclement. The 2 main bedrooms are huge with plenty of storage and comfortable beds. I would have loved a feather pillow as the foam ones are a little hard and not comfortable. The water pressure is amazing which makes the shower a total joy. Unfortunately there is no heating in the bathroom so having a winter holiday makes it unpleasant to strip off and shower. The second bedroom is big enough to add a day bed or sofa bed. I would have forfeited the 3rd bedroom for a heated bathroom and have a bath included. It would have been lovely to have a hot bath after walking up carnigli. The cottage is beautifully placed to enjoy all that Newport has to offer. Perfect for holidays with dogs. We would definitely return and recommend to friends xx

Glad you found Delfryn well placed on the edge of Newport and well appointed. We love the shower too - high pressure and lots of hot water! We debated what to do with the 3rd bedroom but it is very popular so went with shower. The Sykes recommendation is not to use feather pillows for allergy guest reasons. Glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your return. Update Nov 24: You will be pleased to know that there is now a radiator in the shower room for the winter visitors! Property Owner

Good location, well setup and equipped to high Standard. Toasty warm well balanced heating for our November visit.

Many thanks for the great feedback! Glad you found Delfryn nice and warm for you winter stay - new central heating system seems to do its job and I'm sure the log burner helps. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was lovely, great position near the village and a short walk to beach."

The welcome pack of milk bread etc lovely however I had taken those things so was disappointed no washing up liquid, bin bags and only 1/4 of a loo roll. Was a lovely stay tho

Glad you enjoyed Delfryn, the welcome pack and its location close to the centre of Newport and the beach. Our normal cleaners couldn't clean due to illness just before you arrived so a different team cleaned who weren't as familiar with Delfryn and it seems this got missed - apologies. It has been sorted for future guests. Thanks for letting me know. Property Owner

  • "Property is in lovely condition and is very well equipped."

Very comfortable. We did find the stair gates (frame) a bit of a trip hazard but got used to them, we are elderly. All in all a very nice area to holiday in and a well sited cottage to stay in.

Glad you enjoyed you time in the recently refurbished Delfryn and found it well positioned on the edge of Newport. Thanks for the feedback on the stair gates - we think they help guests keep their 4 legged friends from going upstairs but we'll see if there are better versions which are easier for the 2 legged guest as well. Nov 24 update: wooden gates in keeping with banister now fitted which removes the need for the frame trip hazard. Property Owner

  • "Excellent location close to town with excellent restaurants and pubs to choose from but nicely tucked away in peaceful quiet lane."

Interior was really well furnished and we were provided with everything we needed for a very enjoyable stay. Our only comment would be to have some seating on the raised garden to be able to sit and admire the view - one of our favourite things to do on holiday!

Debbie, delighted you had a such a good stay in Delfryn. As you say the location is perfect and pleased you found the refurbishment worked well. Seating for the raised garden is in the plan and should been in place soon. Hope to welcome you back soon! Update 30th August - bench in raised garden now in place with great views, photo added to the website! Property Owner

  • "Delfryn has recently been much improved with a lovely new kitchen and new decor throughout."

It has a very comfortable lounge with TV and Wi-Fi which work well, and three very serviceable bedrooms. A separate dining room also provides space for playing board games etc in inclement weather. At the rear of the property, after ascending newly cut steps, you are rewarded with a lovely view over Trefdraeth from the garden. The house is wonderfully located in the middle of the village, on a lane by a stream, and within walking distance of the shops, with the special advantage of parking spaces. The house is well maintained, but is awaiting a bench outside and improved surfacing of the parking places. Neither of these minor points really detract from the pleasure of staying in this well resourced venue. Convenient, quiet, and in such a very nice little spot.

Patricia, so glad you enjoyed Delfryn and the improvements we have made. There are a few more things we want to do outside and the bench and improved parking surface are in the pipeline. We love the spot being so quiet yet convenient - turn right out of the front door and you're in countryside walking up to Carningli, turn left and in 2 mins you're in Newport. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. Property Owner

The property

Nestled on the outskirts of the charming coastal town of Newport in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is Delfryn.

This attractive, stone-fronted cottage was originally a Woollen Mill, built circa 1880 and was converted into a domestic dwelling in 1920 and is located near Newport Castle.

It benefits form a welcoming interior adorned with original, character features including, Victorian feature fireplaces; exposed, stone feature walls and original doors and windows.

Cross the threshold into your new home-from-home where you can unwind in the sitting room, warm your feet by the gentle crackle of the woodburning stove and flick on the Smart TV while the designated chef of the group steps into the fully-equipped kitchen to prepare dinner.

Dine as a family in the dining room before heading outside and up the stone steps to your own garden with a view, where you can indulge in evening drinks while admiring the vista towards Newport Sands and the sea.

When the sun disappears behind the horizon, head back inside to the first floor where you can wash off the day in the shower room before retiring to either the double, twin or single bedrooms.

When morning calls, venture on a brief 2 minute walk into the heart of Newport where you can enjoy brunch at Blas at Fronlas or Tides Kitchen and Wine Bar before whiling away the day upon the golden sands of Newport Beach or take a leisurely walk in the sea air and along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, with its breath-taking views across the north Pembrokeshire coastline.

Or for the more adventurous, just turn right out of Delfryn's front door and walk straight up Mill Lane onto the Preseli Hills and Caringli Mountain, which sits tantalisingly above your holiday base.

Take a short drive out of the town where the history buffs of the group will enjoy a visit to the reconstructed Castell Henllys Iron Age Village and the picture postcard 5,500 year old Neolithic Burial Chamber at Pentre Ifan.

Head further north to the market town of Cardigan where you can visit Cardigan Castle - the birthplace of the Welsh Eisteddfod in 1176.

Alternatively, the wildlife lovers can enjoy all that nature has to offer at the Welsh Wildlife Centre in Cilgerran with views across the wetlands and take to the open water on a boat for a chance to spot the dolphins that reside in Cardigan Bay.

At the end of your day, head back to Newport where a delicious meal awaits in the Golden Lion or Castle Inn.
