  • "A perfect location and a lovely light cottage - much nicer than I'd expected."

As others have commented, some of the crockery is badly chipped and needs replacing. Rain came in through the bottom right of the front door when it rained heavily.

  • "Stunning location and cottage."

We loved watching the sky and beach changing. We did so much walking and you could just spend all your time in Port Eynon. The Smugglers Inn did some fantastic food and everyone was very friendly. Fish and chips shops were great and the small coffee shop by the surf clothes shop. We were very lucky with the weather and sat in the front garden with the beautiful beach to watch. A lot of wildlife and people watching very peaceful. We sat in the back garden when the sun moved. I did read previous reviews and so came prepared with toilet rolls wood etc. sadly the cleaning is not great but linen and towels were good. Two mugs and some plates are badly chipped and have been for a while looking back over reviews. Also two frying pans and the wok have lost some of the non stick surface. There is a gap in the fence which has some wood leaning on it but luckily my dog didn't escape. There was a lot of dogs poo in the garden which I had to pick up on arrival . The disposal of the rubbish is a bit inconvenient ....I followed instructions in the cottage book but the only bins I could find in the carpark were open general ones (however they were emptied every day) I was worried animals may pull out the domestic waste etc. Despite the remarks I have made I would definitely return summer or winter it's a little gem !

  • "This is a wonderful cottage in a lovely location and we love coming here."

We have booked again, as it makes us relax and unwind. Our dogs were in doggy heaven with the beach right on our doorstep. A true gem. I was however surprised to see on this occasion, that the maintenance issues raised by previous holiday makers had not been addressed and need to be resolved immediately, especially the toilet seat. I also reported it to the caretaker who didn’t ring back and Sykes Cottages who said someone would attend, but hadn’t done so in the week we were there. It would be a great shame if the property is not maintained well so we can all continue to enjoy this beautiful place.

  • "Sweet cottage in a stunning location."

Do read instructions for access and parking which are really helpful. Access is difficult either down steep uneven steps or a narrow overgrown path. We were disappointed that there was No welcome pack or basic provisions such as hand soap in bathroom. Advice on what to bring was really helpful as no useful shops nearby. Poorly maintained with large gap in fence to next door which given dog friendly is poor, windows difficult to open or shut , broken loo seat and leaking plug in bathroom sink which had been mentioned by previous guests , crockery chipped only 4 very large mugs provided. Owners ask no dogs upstairs but no stair gate or way to prevent that so we had to improvise with a deck chair. Wardrobe full of spare bedding so no where to put clothes. It IS a beautiful cottage in a stunning location right on the beach but it is a shame that it has not looked after.

  • "Wonderful cottage just a little disappointed about broken toilet seat, chips on some of the mugs, side gate to the rear of property broken so had to make a barrier out of broken garden plastic seats and the front sea defence plywood, plastic broken chairs could be replaced and the bathroom sink seal around the plug needs replacing as the water drains away when having a shave so had to keep the tap running also window hinges could do with some oil."

  • "Despite pretty awful weather we enjoyed our holiday at Salt Cottage immensely."

The location was incredible. Our two dogs were in their element and the walks from the door were spectacular. The cottage itself is cosy, comfortable and well-equipped. A few minor niggles regarding housekeepingand cleanliness but nothing that would affect the enjoyment of our stay. I would say that due to it's remote location and difficult access, making sure a few things were available on arrival would be really helpful. Milk, tea, coffee, and logs for the fire maybe? The local shop was hardly open while we were there, possibly weather related, and it meant quite a drive to fetch even basic necessities. That being said, once we were fullly organised, we didn't use the car very much as the surroundings were so beautiful. Would definitely stay again.

  • "In short, a stunning cottage, brilliant location, right on the beach."

Nice garden, I'd say semi-secure for those with dogs. Absolutely recommend, lovely place! For those wanting more detail: *For reactive dog owners* If you have an escape artist I'd probably just take a long line for night time toileting as fencing could be jumped. I only mention the next part because it's something that I have to carefully assess and not many people mention in reviews. If you have a reactive dog/s then this place would not be ideal in peak season. I imagine it would be very very busy. We went in November and lucked out with the weather. The beach was quiet so we could get out with the dogs easily and rarely encounter many other dogs. My dog gets too excited on lead and had everywhere been full (holiday cottages, YHA and massive campsite behind) I imagine it would of been a nightmare for us as he barks at everything he wants to say hello to, hence the low season holiday. There are amazing walks nearby, some more challenging than others. Also, Rhossili beach is about 25 minutes away by car, it's worth a trip and is dog friendly. The house was modern throughout, recently painted and well maintained. For the log burner, I'd take wood with you as the petrol station was quite expensive and the wood was damp and difficult to light. The smart central heating was a little confusing so we were glad of the fire. We finally figured out how to use it after googling it. Kitchen had all the utensils, could have done with a cupboard for storing food though as all had something in them. Take sponges, washing up liquid/tablets, bin bags, washing powder and toilet rolls. Personally I think these should all be in minimal supply for the price paid and not everything was available. The internet was better than we thought it would be. Definitely can not rely on it for work though. Smart TV streaming services could be glitchy but we were out on the beach a lot so weren't fussed. Vodafone had 0 network at all so if phonecalls are a must it was WhatsApp via the WiFi. Sykes tried to contact me and left a message that I didn't get unti 3 days later. Perhaps email contact from Sykes would be better? Getting to the cottage in the dark was okay but definitely don't forget the head torch. Not a place for those with mobility issues in my opinion. Directions on the site made sense only if you could see clearly. We arrived in the pitch black and luckily had looked on Google satalite view earlier so I knew which track I needed to drive down. I'd say follow signs for the youth hostel (YHA signs on lamposts) just to the left of the campsite entrance down a bumpy track. When you get to the gate with the padlock drive straight over the grass in front of you and park when you can't go any further due to bushes and unload here. Through a hidden opening in the bushes you go on foot down some steep steps. At the bottom of the steps turn left and follow the path around to the front of the building (you'll see beach access to the left, you'll follow path around to the right though). Follow path along the front of YHA and go through small gate with 'private' on it. Ours was the second to last cottage. Parking permit was on the table and the parking a shortish distance from the cottage back along the bumpy track.

Renovated to a very high degree. Towels and bedding first class. To be able to lay in bed and see the sea was a dream come true for me. The dogs loved the beach, but didn’t venture into the sea. Would recommend this cottage for anyone who wanted a peaceful break.

To be that close to the sea was magical. The earliest we could book was October but we were so lucky with the weather although the lovely log fire was at the cottage had we needed it. Our dogs loved the beach and the back garden of the cottage was lovely and secure for them. The cottage was so adorable and had everything you could need, I cannot recommend staying here highly enough but hope it doesn't get so booked up there is no availability for us to visit again!! The Ship Inn and Smugglers Bar are both incredible. Thank you Sykes Cottages what an absolute gem!!! Vanessa Bayley, North Cerney, Gloucestershire.

The only drawback is the car has to be parked quite a way from the house. The only other thing was the bed was quite small. But it was very comfortable. Other than that, we had a wonderful time and loved the cottage and have recommended it to others.

  • "We had an absolutely lovely and relaxing stay, and would stay again in the future!"

Nothing beats the location or the scenery. There are walks to be had in every direction. We were so happy the cottage accommodates dogs, as it was perfect for our swimming Labs. The neighbours were friendly and helpful. The neighbouring guests were delightful. It is a little tricky getting to the cottage at first but once you've navigated it, it's fine and the arrangement works. Do note there are a few steep steps on route, with an alternate path for those less amble. The cottage was well stocked. If I were going to nit-pick I would say it would have been nice to have a bin liner and a bath matt in the bathroom. We really couldn't have wanted for anything else. Do give the pizza oven a try. We loved it! We cleaned it all out and had fantastic pizza and BBQ and it was a fun experience with views of the bay and the Super Blood & Blue Moon! Wish I could send photos of the pizzas.

It arriving after dusk can be tricky to locate. Both Googlemaps and Waze pointed to different location. Directions on website ok but not clear. Following the signs to youth hostel through a shared private dirt road to youth hostel, mobile caravan park site and cottages would be a better description. The cottages are behind youth hostel and approachable only by a footpath running along the coast on side of the youth hostel.

WiFi was fine but no phone signal at all until we were well away from the bay (Just incase someone needs to rely on phone, wasn't a problem for us). Everything you could need is in cottage. As other comment says, comfy chairs for outside would of been good but understand that could be difficult during times of bad weather and storage. Only issue we had was cottage/bed/towels hadn't been cleaned before our arrival, due to an 'admin problem', owner couldn't have been more apologetic and was cleaned next day (we hadn't arrived until late in evening), though sadly the promise of a refund of a night's stay still hasn't materialised!!

Wonderful beachfront location, it was just what we needed to really relax and unwind, very peaceful and scenic. The cottage is perfect for 2, very tastefully decorated and furnished with everything you need. Loved the bedroom, especially being able to lie in bed watching and listening to the waves. Lots of lovely walks on the dog friendly beach! Only things that would enhance it a little more are:- - if there were sun loungers provided -couldn’t find a washing line or clothes airer -no parking permit was left for us.( owner sorted this quickly) -rear garden was not totally dog proof Overall a wonderful place that we will definitely be returning to!
