  • "The flat is in a beautiful location with tremendous views from every window and a wonderful variety of hilly and flat walks right from the door."

It's a very peaceful spot, but you are over a stable that is in use - you can feel the vibrations of the horses' movements through the floor, similar to a child kicking the seat on a train - it's not nearly as intense as children kicking seats though - if you do plenty of walking it won't keep you awake! Parking is shared with another holiday cottage, up a driveway at the front with a gate that opens directly onto the main road. I found the entrance/exit a little nerve-wracking as visibility isn't great pulling out and you have to either stop your car in the road or pull across to the layby to manage open/close the gate. The flat is well designed with everything that you might need, including good wifi, good lighting and a handy freezer compartment in the fridge. There's a washing machine in the utility room which serves as an entrance hall and which is shared with the owner, but I was strongly discouraged from using it - and there is only a washing line for drying. It may be useful to know that there is no welcome pack here, so you do need to take everything including tea/coffee and salt/pepper, foil, kitchen roll and a clean washing up sponge etc. Central heating is controlled by the owner: if you are cold then you can phone her and she will switch it on for you. I found that it came on at random times anyway and even as a person who feels the cold I didn't find it too bad. Like many holiday cottages, I found at the time of my visit that it would really benefit from a more careful inspection by the regular cleaners of frequently used items such as crockery and cutlery as not every guest will leave things nicely - and it was overdue for a professional deep clean - and replacing or removing a few old and shabby items - simple things that would make a huge difference to guests and do this lovely flat better justice. For the location, I could not recommend it more highly if you like views, peace and quiet and walks: you just need to be prepared - if you want a cup of tea on arrival after your long journey: pack your own.

Thank you for staying with us, The Granary is not located above the stables, the horses are in the building next door, we've never have anyone notify us of noise issues before so this was a first. The washing machine is perfect to use in normal circumstances. You advised us your dog had been sick all over a throw, we asked if you could kindly refrain from using the washing machine for this purpose and to use the sink to get the sick out as it would have clogged up the machine, apologies this was misunderstood. We did offer welcome packs originally but we ended up throwing so much away as it wasn't being used. We do have access the heating, we are happy to alter this for you, however we would advise on not having the windows open all day, as the heat is regulated through the property. We do ask that you notify us any issues whilst you are here, we are only a stones throw away and always happy to help! Property Owner

The most enjoyable feature of this accommodation was the double doors with Juliet balcony with a view of the beautiful Sussex countryside. Whether it was the early morning mist, giving way to beautiful sunshine, the gentle breeze or the singing of the bullfinch in the tree outside, this really made our holiday. Plus the hosts are lovely and there is plenty of parking room. Access to the flat is up quite narrow winding stairs so perhaps not suitable for anyone with a disability. Otherwise, a great experience.

About the location

FULKING

Henfield 3 miles; Brighton 6 miles; Worthing 9 miles.

Fulking is a lovely Sussex village located in the South Downs National Park and dating back to just after the Norman invasion in 1066. There is a quaint country pub just outside the village called "The Shepherd and Dog" beside which is a spring, due to the constant flow of water from the chalk strata a small steam rises and travels uphill. The stream eventually flows out into a public tap and horsetrough, above which is a tiled inscription with a psalm in honour of John Ruskin a Victorian writer and philanthropist, definatley worth looking out for when visiting Fulking. Several of the houses in this Sussex village date back to the 1600s with a lot of them are half timbered. However Fulking is best known for it's beautiful countryside and proximity within the South Downs National Park. This is the perfect choice for walking and riding, whether by horse or cycle, with stunning views to admire as you stroll. Why not pack a picnic and enjoy a day of fresh air, flora and fauna. Devil's Dyke is no doubt the most famous part of this area, and there are many myths and legends regarding how this deep valley came about. Some said it was from the devil digging a trench to allow the sea to flood the land when he was disturbed he then fled leaving his trench unfinished and throwing the last shovel of earth over his shoulder which fell into the sea and formed the Isle of Wight. This part of Sussex offers visitors lots of towns and villages to explore each with their own special attraction. With Brighton it's beaches and shopping, a day investigating "The Lanes" stopping for a coffee and a spot of people watching, Glyndbourne famous for it's opera festival held in the grounds and where people dress up and bring a picnic. Shoreham has it's airport which is the UK's oldest licensed airport still in operation and has even been used as a filming location for scenes from Poirot, Tenko and The Da Vinci Code to name a few. Spend a week in Sussex and explore the world!
