  • "Property definitely needs a deep clean, smelt musty and damp."

Put it down to just needing airing until we discovered the black mould. There is black mould on the wall by the window in upstairs bedroom and over the window frame. Black mould all over door frame in the ‘drying’ room and around the door. Awful discovery on first night of a used diabetic monitoring device with a bloody needle in the shower, so very lucky that it was noticed before it impaled one of us, totally disgusting. Grill tray in cooker required cleaning before we could use it. Cottage is in a good location to travel to Skye, you do hear the busy road noise though. I agree with others that a garden gate would improve the garden, unsure why you are clearly so resistant to putting one there.Theres unsecure to the hillside and then there’s worryingly unsecure to the road.

We're very sorry indeed to hear the property was not up to our usual high standards for your stay. We completely agree that it is totally unacceptable that a blood glucose sensor was left in the shower from the previous guests. Our regular cleaner is away just now and we are investigating how this was missed. Thank you for drawing our attention to the staining on the wall in the dryng room. This hasn't been highlighted to us before and we have contacted our cleaners to address this straight away. As this room is a modern extension, it can be prone to condensation if it is used as a drying area which could have caused some marking, but this is usually temporary and avoidable if guests air the room, but of course we will double check to ensure there are no issues going forward. In respect of any property near a road, there may be traffic noise, especially at peak travel times, so this is unfortunately unavoidable. The road outside the cottage is a residential one and the traffic reflects that We do advertise our garden as being open; being closely connected to beautiful area which is used by local wildlife such as deer and small mammals, we want to share this with our guests. Although the abudant wild plants during the summer can give the impression that the garden is enclosed, we do feel that gateing off the passageway beside the garage may lead to small children and pets being given more freedom in the garden than we feel would be safe. We understand that you feel differently. Property Owner

  • "It’s a lovely house in a great spot for getting around the highlands and on to Skye."

Very quiet and peaceful (you occasionally hear the main road but only outside and it’s not intrusive). We only used the downstairs rooms as there were just 2 of us, although we did go upstairs to find more towels as 1 large towel each for a week when you can’t guarantee the weather to dry them is a bit tight. The water pressure and availability of hot water is excellent - the shower by the kitchen is fantastic. The kitchen is well fitted, including a dishwasher, although there was no dishwasher detergent (only salt) so we had to buy some (see below comment on last morning). The lounge is comfy and very roomy and we used my streaming services plus iPlayer to watch TV as standard terrestrial channels are not available. The bed we used and bedding were decent quality. We have already recommended the house to friends who also enjoy a Scottish holiday. My only ‘negative’ is the ask of guests to do housework on the last morning. We used to have an Airbnb and if guest chose to do any ‘cleaning’ it was a bonus, but we never asked and certainly didn’t have specific laundry baskets labelled for the task. We also always provided dishwasher tablets - 1 for each day of their stay. In my opinion stripping beds etc is not what people come on holiday to do. To be clear, we did it and often do, it is expectation / ask that I personally don’t like. As I say, we liked the house, have recommended it already and had a lovely stay overall.

Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed your holiday with us and found the cottage a comfortable base to explore this lovely part of the world . Many apologies about the dishwasher tablets, we do leave a supply for the week and we must have missed it somehow for your stay. Our requests about cleaning and laundry were part of the covid advice and we've kept them in view of the current surge in cases. We can easily change the information to ask if people are 'able and wish to' to avoid any sense of obligation. Thanks again for your feedback and thank you for recommending us to others. • "It was a comfortable cottage, which was clean and tidy, however I know it was listed as open garden, this could have been easily remedied by putting a gate at the end of the garage."

This would make it much safer for small children and dogs. I appreciate that the back is open to the hillside, but it is so overgrown at this time of year,it would deter all but the most adventurous children or dogs. The front garden would therefore not be open to a sometimes busy road . The cottage is in a lovely area and is perfect for visiting Skye and the surrounding area. I know this may sound picky, but there were no trays to heat food in the oven, in an otherwise well stocked kitchen.

Thanks for your feedback and especially drawing our attention to the missing baking tray. Replacements are on their way. We're sorry that you were disappointed in the garden. Our garden is open to the hillside to support local wildlife which is why it's not dog or child proof. Being cut into the hillside means it is on more than one level with some steep parts and some uneven ground. Because of this we feel that small children and dogs require supervision when in the garden, we would be concerned that a gate might give a false sense of security. We will make sure the listing reflects this. Property Owner

The cottage was a great base to explore the area The short walk down to the shore was great for the dog.It would have been nice if there was a light at the back door and a gate at the garage to make the garden dog proof . Other than that the cottage was first class i would love to come back if in this area Thank you very much .

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in this lovely part of the country and would be delighted to welcome you back. We've now installed motion activated lights. Our garden is open to the hillside to support local wildlife which is why it's not dog/child proof. We hope that's clear from the property description which says it's not enclosed. Property Owner

  • "Fabulous! Clean and so well equipped."

However, and there’s always one! As it is advertised for children and dogs, why oh why don’t you put a gate across the garage entrance? Such a shame that dog had to be on a lead all the time, as the road is quiet busy outside. No outside light at back, really hard to see trip hazards, coming back with arms full to find lock. Coffee/ side table would be good - we used dining chairs with coasters. Mould spores on the front windows, in lounge And lastly, not sure if you are aware, the loo next to kitchen’s cistern is constantly filling, hope you’re not on a meter!

Thank you for your feedback. We have acted on your comments and over the winter we have installed motion activated lighting at both doors to the cottage. There is also a side table in the lounge. The cistern has also been fixed. In respect of the garden, we specify that the garden is not secure/enclosed. The garden boundary is open hillside vegetation with only light fencing to allow free access for the local wildlife populations. We would not want a gate to give the impression that the garden was secure. Property Owner

The window over the bed in the large bedroom wouldnt stay closed and the toilet in the downstairs shower room leaked from under the base every time you flushed it. With a few improvements i would rate it highly.

Thanks very much for alerting us to these problems. It appears that the leak is from the pipe from the cistern and so there are drips of clean water as the cistern empties. We are in the process of repairing it. We try make sure the cottage is aired well between our guests and we are sorry that on this occasion we haven't met our usual high standards. We have checked the window above the bed and the closing mechanism (the silver bar across the bottom does seem to be locking. • "You need to omit the things said about the views."

There are no views of the loch or the castle. The accommodation is spot on very clean and spacious but I also booked this property on the description of the views so on that point I was extremely disappointed

We are sorry you were disappointed about the views from the cottage. Our listing says "A couple of minutes’ walk will bring you the pebbled shores of Loch Alsh with views of the mountains and Lochs." Further down the listing says "Although the property is nestled in a remote area, the local shop and closest pub are within a five-minute drive, or a 15-20 minute walk, with stunning views of the famous Eilean Donan Castle and the splendour of Loch Duich edged by the imposing Kintail mountains." We will look again at the wording to see if we can rephrase this as you have found it misleading. We had intended the comments to refer to the views from the edge of the nearby Loch and the views from the local pub rather than the cottage. We are glad you found the rest of the cottage satisfactory Property Owner

There's certain things that I would address if I lived there is when it rains the front door path becomes very slippy and dangerous when wet because of the moss. The upstairs bathroom door & the back bedroom door blind isn't adequate for stopping people seeing you in the room(they can see you, you can't see them). The drying room was a bonus to have. A reading light in the living room would be good to. It's an excellent property for two families holidaying together, we had a lovely time there.

  • "Some practical details for owner to consider."

The downstairs room has an ineffective blind on the door which meant light disturbed those sleeping in that room, but also you could see into the room when there was a light on thus impacting on privacy. Abetter blind or solid door would be good. We had a wet week and used the garden room as a "drying room" but there was no means of venting the room - either opening windows or an extractor fan would be good. Happy for following to be published: Lovely cottage, very comfortable, well equipped, great location though we had expected to be closer to the sea from the description. The bakery & pizza house along the road were brilliant. Nearest shop is Reraig so a drive needed even for basics like milk. We hope to return!

Thanks for your feedback and the comments about the door to the ensuite bathrooms and the downstairs bedroom. We've been through a number of options, as you can appreciate people's views vary on how much light vs privacy they like. We will try some other options and see if that seems better for our guests. Similarily for the garden room. Thanks for letting us know. We'll certainly take the comments on board. Property Owner

A great cottage in a fab location for lots of adventures in all directions. Trips to Skye, Inverewe Gradens, Applecross and Eileen Donan castle. Amazing bakery a short walk away. Very cosy cottage generally well equipped although only 6 plates and 6 bowls etc which meant we ran out constantly, so more of those would be a useful addition. The side entrance with coat hanging and boot room was very welcome, in fact would have struggled without it as such a wet week! Warm and cosy with nice touches like a bunch of flowers and loaf of bread when we arrived, although no wood for the fire so had to go a few miles looking for a shop that sold logs. A deep clean of skirtings and cobwebs etc needed but overall a great cottage, clean and comfy with everything you need for a family break. Thanks for letting us stay!

So glad you had a good holiday. We realised we needed a 'wet things' room with our own family. Thanks for drawing our attention to the crockery. The kitchen was well equipped and pleasant to use. The secluded garden with morning and evening sun for breakfast and BBQ (with midges but we persevered!) was a nice surprise especially as the owners had provided new garden furniture in response to someone else's comment! A beautiful spot, very peaceful with views of hills around, dark skies and stars out of the top velux window, and a short walk from the shore, Manuela's bakery and PizzaJo's, with mouthwatering pastries, bread and pizzas, and of course Dornie with the Clachan Inn and village store. Just a shame there was no need to use the lovely wood burner as the weather was so warm! We had a wonderful week, with sunshine and no rain! If anything we found the cottage almost too warm at night, with lovely thick feather duvets, but they would be perfect for most Scottish weather! The only minor issue we had was an overflow from the upstairs shower onto the tiled bathroom floor. On investigation we found a clogged up filter in the shower drain so this was easily fixed and didn't happen again. Worth adding to the list for the cleaners to check each time, and making guests aware of in case it happens again. We also needed to buy more toilet rolls as we couldn't find any when the original ones ran out, but I think this was probably on the list of things to bring, and a small price to pay! Thanks again for such a lovely place to stay. It was perfect for my 60th birthday hillwalking treat with some of my grown up family and a good friend. I'd love to come back some time!
