• "As stated, Cartmel was very clean throughout and also very comfortable."

  The only thing I would suggest is that a small handrail be placed on the wall inside the shower cubicle to assist people like my wife with arthritis in entering and exiting the cubicle. We would definately use Cartmel again, hopefully very soon next year. Thank you. Mike and Pam Fell.

• "A beautiful cottage in the lovely Middleham."

  Perfectly situated for the village centre. We benefitted from gorgeous weather and made good use of the small but gorgeous garden. Our spaniel, Hamish, was safely able to roam in the garden while we enjoyed the view and the racehorses passing by. Hamish also benefitted from lovely walks and off the lead running nearby! We visited the Himalayan Sculpture Gardens, would definitely recommend and had an amazing Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak in Ripon. A wonderful time was had by us all, including Hamish!

• "The cottage is small but perfectly adequate for our needs and well equipped."

  PParking to load and unload is a challenge unless you find your way to the back door. The town has much interest and plenty of cafes and walks and the countryside is a delight. The dog was fascinated by the sheep being driven through the town and the steady stream of racehorses. I didn’t appreciate the reminder from Sykes on how to behave when departing the property as if I was a child without manners.

• "What a cosy little cottage."

  Just as the description describes. Full of character and charm. Has everything you could need to enjoy your stay. Couldn’t beat the view watching stunning race horses walk past the windows several times a day, on their way to the gallops. Quaint town with great shop, restaurants and pubs. Fantastic fish and chip shop literally across the road. Our stay here was a joy and can’t wait to come and stay again. Lovely memories made, looking forward to coming back soon.

• "The cottage was warm, comfortable and well equipped."

  There was a dog crate which we found very useful. The location near the centre was ideal with plenty of walks close by for the dogs and pubs for refreshments. You cannot park outside the cottage however there is access at the rear for off loading/loading your luggage. We had no problem parking in the square which is 2mins away. Definitely stay again.

• "The property itself was good for our stay, there was a nice roomy lounge and well stocked kitchen."

  The bedrooms were a good size and bathroom was clean. Our only problem was for the dogs. The front garden isn't an ideal place for them to toilet, and isn't what I would list as an enclosed garden for dogs. However if uou are prepared to go down the back lane in your pyjamas with a torch and your dogs on a lead we managed very well.

It is enclosed, and we recognise that some owners might prefer to padlock the gate closed, which is why we supply the padlock and key. • "The two of us plus our dog really enjoyed our stay at the cosy stone-built Cartmel Cottage."

  We generally parked (free) on the central cobbled square of the small town, a very short walk from the cottage - just watch for the traffic as only a narrow footpath space at points. Lovely to see the horses going past in the morning !

• "We loved the cottage very much , clean and homely , however would suggest the following changes."

  1. The bed mat in the entrance smelt strongly of dogs and had hair over it. It would have been nice to be able to hang out coats in the entrance hall . We couldn’t as the smell of the dogs went into them and also the living room if we left the door adjoining open. Suggest a box outside to store it in. 2. Neither bedroom window opened, even though it’s chilly outside it would have been nice to have them open slightly at night. We ended up opening the landing window but then had to keep the bedroom door open.

Whilst we are very much a dog friendly cottage, we realise that not all visitors have pets, so will ensure we have a separate "dog free" door mat and also have a storage box to lock the dog crate and bed in. • "We recently spent a week at Cartmel cottage."

  It is the third time we have been, needless to say, we love it there. The cottage is clean and well maintained, with everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. We were contacted by the owner the week before we went, to inform us that there had been a flood in the kitchen due to a faulty washing machine resulting in damage to the laminate flooring. We still went to Cartmel, it was only a minor inconvenience and the owner offered us a partial refund as compensation. We also made use of the brand new washing machine that had been installed. The shower in the bathroom is virtually new easy to use, and has good water pressure. Towels are provided, (and there are plenty of them). The main road at the front of the cottage is perhaps a little busier than previous visits but it was peak tourist season whilst we were there. Instead of stepping out of the front gate straight onto the road, we made use of the back door and cut through the little alley way. It is virtually the same distance to the village square. The horses which pass several times a day on their way to and from the gallops are a major draw for us. The only improvement that we feel could be made to the cottage, is possibly the provision of a little more comfortable seating in the living room. Fortunately, the weather was great and we were able to spend most of our time outside. As I've said, we love it there and most certainly will return.

• "We have just returned home from what was meant to be a stay from 27 June to 30 June."

  Firstly, the mattress was full of stains. We resorted to sleeping on the top of the duvet with one of the spare duvet covers over us as a sheet. Secondly the property was on the road edge - no mention of this in the description. We got there on the Monday afternoon and as it was nice and sunny we sat in the garden. Quite frankly it was like sitting on the edge of the M62 - there was a constant flow of heavy traffic meaning we couldnt even hear each other as we spoke. Once you stepped out of the gate you were directly onto the road. Extremely disappointed to say the least. I would appreciate your comments.

  I am so sorry that you were disappointed in your stay. We would have been pleased to hear your feedback when you arrived, and we would have tried to help immediately. Our cottage is cleaned meticulously between changeover and each bed has clean mattress protectors and pillow protectors at every changeover. We will, of course, get this checked immediately. We had previously mentioned the problem with the flooring and offered a chance to cancel the booking and offered a partial refund, which we will, of course, honour. We don't like our guests to be unhappy with their stay and I will be in touch personally too. We have noticed an increase in traffic flow during the summer months - obviously farm traffic and the horses go past, but as The Dales have got busier, so has the traffic. We do mention in the details that the front garden is adjacent to the road and we will make sure that this is clearer in the details. Thank you for the feedback. Property Owner

  Ideal for watching the horses in a morning ride out onto the gallops. The cottage itself is very dog friendly and our sprocker loved it there. All essential items provided. Useful back access for loading and unloading. A very comprehensive information leaflet provided by the owners. Will definitely book again.

• "Cartmel is a lovely little cottage, well situated right in the middle of Middleham, the drawback was the early morning traffic as well as parking would have been difficult if the hotel behind was operationnal."

  Cartmel was very dog friendly with neearby walks without taking the car, this helped as there is no yard or garden with the cottage. The cottage was warm and comfortable with local amenities just a few yards away as well as easy access to further afield shops etc.

• "The house is as advertised but was smaller than anticipated (our fault, not theirs) and was too small for us."

  Also there was a lot of road noise - motorbikes (bank holiday weekend) and tractors (grass cutting) - again, not the owners fault and we should have anticipated how busy the road would be. Perfectly pleasant house but not for us. The surrounding area however is beautiful and lots to do.

  It was necessary to move the kitchen table in order to sit at it - not very convenient. In order to read in the evening another standard light is needed - cottage quite dark. The steps leading up to the cottage are hard to negotiate when carrying luggage but we are in our eighties!

Middleham is a lovely town and the surrounding area just perfect for me. Riverside walks and lovely countryside - albeit a tad muddy at this particular time. • "We stayed at this cottage last year and found it ideal for our purposes so booked it again this year."

  Our only reservation is that for some reason the owners have put an armchair and settee in the lounge and have also left the old black settee and tub chair. Given the lounge is small and the cottage only sleeps four at a pinch we couldn’t understand the need to clutter the lounge with so much seating as it left very little room for the foldaway table and chairs and we felt it spoilt whole enjoyment of the lounge. Otherwise the cottage was very nice and the weather was perfect.

  Beautiful outlook onto the church and lots to do nearby. The regular church bells and horses added to the atmosphere but didn’t disturb us at all, our little one loved the horses. Small and compact but everything we needed when using this cottage as a base. Lots of walks nearby for the dog as well.

  The boiler also trips out occasionally and requires resetting. Both were issues when we visited last year and the owner wrote in the introduction that the settee was in the process of being replaced and the boiler fixed but neither were any better this time. We would definitely stay at Cartmel again but only if these issues were addressed.

  The beds are very comfortable with crisp cotton bedding and quilts. The cottage is situated in the heart of Middleham with shops and pubs close to hand. The latter provide interesting food especially pleasing we're their vegetarian choices. Of course the true delight are the racehorses from Mark Johnson's stable that pass in front of the cottage a few times every morning. There's a little garden at the front of the cottage to relax in and listen to the church chimes. A good selection of visitor nformation is provided. Although there is no parking outside the cottage, it isn't a problem as the square is close by. I would happily stay at Cartmel Cottage again if I returned to the Dales.

  It should be noted that the only practical parking is in the quite small market square which can get full. Cartmel Cottage was very clean and had all the facilities we required. The owners sent us a very helpful email before we went with a wealth of information about the cottage and the area. It's a minor gripe but we didn't find the settee very comfy.

• "Was a really great cottage in a lovely village."

  If you’re into history and race horses then Middleham will suit you to a T. A few times each morning dozens of race horses leave their stables next door making their way to the gallops which is also a great location for walking and running for humans too. Our only negatives was the cleanliness of the cottage, the cleaner doesn’t seem to know how to clean pan and vacuum the sides of the sofa oh and the knives in the block are blunt, making chopping up veg quite an experience. One key point to note is that this cottage is on the main road, can be especially noisy at the weekend with noisy motorbikes. We only ate out one evening, would recommend the Richard III on the square, not the smartest pub in the word but they do know how to cook! We would recommend this cottage, the owner will go out of their way to assist with your planning. For the negatives, the positives outweigh the negatives. We would definitely recommend this cottage and the location.

  It was everything we had expected, very clean, cosy and well equipped. Loved the fact could see the race horses go by each morning from our bed!! The owner was very helpful with a couple of queries I had and there was plenty of information of what do do and where to go as well as instructions for all the equipment in the cottage.
