  • "We have used Sykes before and did not find this property to be at an acceptable standard for a 4 star rating."

The problem in our view is mainly one of the maintenance. In the kitchen, probably the best room, there were not enough cutlery for 6 people. It was supplimented by children's plastic to make up 6 place settings. The plates and mugs had chips, which is not really acceptable practice. In the twin bedrooms the draws could not be opened as the handles had fallen off. The bathroom had holes on the wall where the towel rail had been ripped off and not repaired. The furniture was very tired to warrant a four star rating from Sykes the marketing operation responsible for the standards of their rental offering with their owners. Given that the property had to be vacated by 9 am and could not be entered until 4pm, a 7 hour window, there should be plenty of time to maintain and fix problems between rentals in our experience.

Would recommend parking in the free car park, the butchers is fantastic and their pasties are freshly made each day. The royal oak pub is a road over and the locals made us welcome. The house was a great base and the enclosed garden was brilliant with the dogs - we had breakfast on the patio and g and t’s in the evening on the top decking looking over the village. The dogs loved swimming by the famous bridge everyday. Matt the host was easy to get hold and was very helpful. We will be back

  • "I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stayed at 5 Bodmin Hill."

Lostwithiel is a great base from which to explore Cornwall, it also has everything you need if you don’t want to drive anywhere. The cottage itself is large, comfortable and has everything you are likely to need. It has 3 good sized bedrooms upstairs, all equally spacious. Downstairs a large reception, handy for all the excess gear you take on holiday and a large kitchen diner with everything you need if you don’t want to eat out, (there is plenty of choice in Lostwithiel). Outside a large well kept garden with 2 seating areas and a BBQ facing south and east across the Fowey valley. A great place to stay!

  • "I'll start with the positives: the beds were incredible soft and comfortable, and the kitchen was really well-equipped and clean."

The garden was gorgeous, although unfortunately the weather wasn't good enough for us to make much use of it – I'm sure we would've done if it wasn't such a wet week in March. Unfortunately, when we arrived the boiler and heating were off and the house was freezing and smelled slightly damp in the front of the house. We rang the owner and they talked us through fixing the boiler, however water started spraying out of it and although the owner was apologetic and said he'd call out someone to look, we were told this wouldn't be for 2 days and until then to use water from the kettle to wash up and one plug-in space heater for the whole house. Very stressful, but thankfully we managed to fix it ourselves that night. On top of this, the one bathroom shower is very weak, the internet is weak and can't be used in the kitchen, the living room lamp kept blowing the fuse if you tried to use it, the front door is very stiff which is a worry for less able people (you have to ram it open/shut!), there was a huge patch of condensation some days on the wall under the fuse box, and we couldn't get the gas fire going (but this may have been us, not a fault, but we had a good go at it)... plus some of the towels were stained and had a bit of an odd smell. On the whole, it feels like the whole place needs to be updated. There are mismatched patches of paint on the bedroom walls; and the house, as gorgeous as it could be, feels overall pretty neglected. Pretty disappointed for the price we paid. As I say, it's got beautiful bones, it's just not very well maintained.

Hi, I'm very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay and thank you for raising these points with me. Based on this feedback I just want to update you with the following: - It turns out the boiler had an issue with its pump which was causing loss of pressure. This has now been rectified. I believe the slight damp smell would have been caused by the lack of heating in the run up to your stay. This shouldn't happen again. Unfortunately, the remote thermostat didn't alert me to the issue of no heating and therefore compounded the issue. I've now managed to re-connect to it so I can monitor temp at all times. - The tripping socket was identified to also have a fault and this has also been rectified - The house has recently undergone a freshen up re painting, hopefully giving it a new lease of life - I'm sorry you were unable to use the gas fire, I'd have happily walked you through the starting processes. I appreciate this can be troublesome and always encourage guests to to call me where issues arise - The lack of pressure in the shower was due to a poorly connected hose to the shower head, I noticed a lot of water running from the bottom. I've now replaced the hose to ensured the connection is nice and tight - We have had problems with the internet in the past so I invested in the BT extender disks last year. Possibly you only connected to the home hub which does have a weaker signal. My partner and I stayed last week and were both able to work from home in the kitchen. However I've added a 3rd extender to the middle of the house to hopefully further strengthen the signal. Thank you for the positive comments on the beds, well equipped kitchen and gorgeous garden, It's a great shame you were unable to enjoy the outdoor space. I agree, the house does have lovely bones and hopefully with all of these updates I've moved it a little more toward model and further away from skeletor :) Many thanks, The Owner Property Owner

Bulbs blown in the house not replaced, outside lights not working how you supposed to take a dog out at night. Mould on the grout in the bathroom and the blinds most probably never been cleaned. The kitchen floor was that dirty my white socks were black and thrown out. Thick grease on pots and pans that have never been checked. Basically would never go back if you paid me.

  • "The cottage was just perfect for us."

Both the house and garden have lots of space. Outdoors, it has a handy BBQ and dining area outside and a lovely corner with a low table and seats to peacefully read a book or have a drink. The house has three good size rooms, and the kitchen and bathrooms are quite new. The cottage met all our expectations really. Furthermore, it is located in the middle of Cornwall, so it is rather convenient if you want cover a big area in your visit to Cornwall.

  • "A nice little village and a nice house, comfortable and great for walking to shops (oddly all shut end March/April) & pubs & we had a good stay, highly recommend Asquiths restaurant - superb!"

We were out all day as renovating our house in Fowey & we can honestly say the house is lovely to come back to after 12 hours of hard exhausting work to relax in the bath or a hot shower, lots of hot water. Dare we say, parts of it might need a little TLC - sofas a little worn but still nice, but double bed mattress in back room very worn and rather uncomfortable but sure the owners have that scheduled to replace. The other double very comfy & nicely firm & the singles felt firm too (but we didn’t sleep in there). There is a problem with parking, though - don’t expect to park in the road as it was full at all times of day. We stayed in March and had to park in main Lostwithial car park (7 mins walk with dogs and bags uphill) every day as nothing in nearby roads - double yellow lines & people did get tickets we noticed),goodness knows what it’s like in July & August! It’s a pretty cottage, spacious & the kitchen is lovely & well equipped for cooking but oddly only 6 of everything and only 5 mugs, two badly chipped! 6 people would struggle with that but there were only 4 of us so fine for us. Garden is very pretty even in March & must be lovely in summer, lots of quite steep slippery steps, so with the big steps up to the house and steep stairs this house is definitely only recommended for the fit and able. Communication was a bit of a struggle with the owner & he/she took days to get back to us and then didn’t reply at all on checkout day which was pretty important as no info on where to leave rubbish & recycling, as no help in “info” book which we only found on checking out & it doesn’t mention important checkout info (might we suggest the book is updated & left out on a table?). Perhaps Being an Airbnb Superhost make me a little more critical of things like that as I’m fanatical about giving my guests the best quality experience and as much helpful information as possible as they then usually leave the house nicely (which we did of course & always do) & I’m available 12 hours a day I for guests. We wanted to let the owner know his heating was on high 24 hrs a day but when he doesn’t reply, we didn’t bother. We turned it down of course when not there & at night but others won’t & it must be costing him a fortune in gas, poor man! All in all a good stay, a lovely comfortable house in most respects & in a sweet village & only 15 mins to beautiful Fowey.

  • "It was a lovely cottage, and Lostwithiel a great base to explore that part of Cornwall."

Everything was clean and comfortable, and the kitchen was well equipped. The garden was secure enough for our bouncy spaniel. We had a very enjoyable week (despite less than ideal weather) and managed lots of fabulous walks, and some castles and gardens, as well a few days on the beach. Kayaking at Fowey was also fun. The only downside is that the parking at the cottage wasn't easy - it wasn't really a problem for us, or put us off from returning, but it might be for anyone with mobility problems.

Ideal for us with our small dog. Parking was easy if you arrive early afternoon, before people finish work there was a space right opposite the house which made unloading and reloading so much easier. Lostwithiel itself is lovely, only has a few pubs, but the food in The globe, Earl of Chatham and The Kings Arms was really good. These were also dog friendly which suited us down to the ground. Some lovely walks along the river, up to the castle and through the Lanhydrock Estate to Bodmin parkway where we caught the train back. 5 minutes and you're back in Lostwithiel. A little gem.

  • "Great location."

A lovely home away from home. Although the cottage was lovely and beautifully presented, we still felt comfortable enough to stay there with two dogs and 2 energetic boys without worrying they were going to destroy anything! The only issue is parking- which is what you would expect in this central location in a period property-we were fine parking a bit further up the hill and walking when needed, but my mum is registered disabled and it was a bit of a pain for her- but we got round it and it’s well worth it for the location. Absolutely beautiful cottage and very deceptive in space-large inside with a lovely garden area and views over the hills to the back of the house. 2 minute walk to lovely pubs, shops and riverside which has benches and public barbecues. Neighbours all friendly. We stayed as 4 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs and had plenty of room. Location great for days out to various beaches, Bodmin, Looe and Fowey as well as many other villages and towns. The Lostwithiel museum was great ( and free!) as was a visit to the local Restormel Castle. St Bartholomew’s church in the centre of the town is absolutely beautiful and steeped in history. We would definitely return- in fact we are missing it already! Great owners, fabulous friendly communication and fabulous housekeeping. Many thanks!
