This is due to cottage looking and feeling tired. Bedroom curtains needed renewing, boiler had leaks, TV was old and needs replacing. The best room was the bathroom, that is now a proper walk in shower. But floor edging, under door, needs finishing off to make it safe.

Cottage is slightly dated but well-equipped and a good space to be able to live in for the week. The owner was very helpful and accessible (not that we had any issues). The location is great - the kitchen overlooks the beach and entrance to Amble harbour. Parking is easy (outside the house or along the adjacent street) and the area sociable. A funfair was running for a few days opposite, on the green, but was neither particularly noisy nor a problem. The cottage is a great base for walks to the dunes (south) or Warkworth (north, not quite an hour) and for days out to Berwick (walk round the walls, nice lunch), Cragside House (NT property, excellent day out) and Hexham (to visit Housesreads Roman museum). There are plenty of accessible minisupermarkets withoin 10 minutes walk (Co-op, Tesco) and a big Morrisons 5 minutes drive away (on the link road by-passing Amble) where you can also get fuel. Wifi signal is strong (better than ours at home!) and lounge a comfortable living area. Was good value - we enjoyed our stay!

We had already been to stay in Lythem St.Annes for a short break and that had been Covid secure with cushions that could not be washed removed. The first thing we saw was a tatty old throw on one of the sofas it should not have been there. We had brought food and we lifted out 2 dinner plates which both had dried food on.Luckily we had brought a picnic basket so could use those plates. The fire was thick with dust and there were many dusty old ornamnts We had brought lots of cleaning products so I spent several hours cleaning all the surfaces and decided we would not use any of their impliments and took our food home. The bathroom had a clean toilet and wash basin but the tiles were very dirty and had not been cleaned once again there were dirty dusty ornaments. In the garden there was lots of rubbish at the side of the shed . When we went into Amble every where we went cafes restaurants were covid sucure . I do not have a smart phone so could not take photographs. We shower every day but could not stand to use it and on Wednesday night we decided to leave could not cope with the dirty place any more. • "Nice cosy wee house just across the road from the shore with a welcome pack on arrival even though we were only there for 3 nights."

Amble is quaint and charming and very friendly. We were just a few minutes walk from the shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways. A great base for exploring the coast or just chilling in Amble. I'm pretty sure we will return.

  • "We took our two dogs to a lovely cottage in Amble, Northumberland."

The cottage was in a great location, overlooking the beach, and was well equipped.. We were surprised to find this level of cleanliness in a dog friendly cottage, unlike some other companies we have used in the past. We enjoyed visiting local places, and our dogs loved the Northumberland beaches. My husband and I enjoyed sitting by the open fire every evening., especially with a glass of wine. This year we have booked another Sykes cottage for a week (in July) to visit the Peak District.

About the location

AMBLE

Warkworth 1 mile; Alnmouth 4 miles.

The bustling little seaport of Amble is situated at the mouth of the River Coquet and is an ideal place for exploring Northumberland. Historically a centre for boatbuilding, Amble offers a marina, a harbour, sandy beaches and coastal walks to the bird sanctuary at Hauxley and country park at Druridge Bay. Large fishing boats moor along the harbour wall and land a variety of fish, prawns, crabs and lobsters. There is a fish centre on the side of the harbour that is now primarily a shell fish hatchery to re-stock levels of lobster and other shell fish, this sells local fish and is open to the public. A mile south of Amble is Coquet Island, an RSPB reserve with a large population of terns, puffins and eider ducks and boat trips around the island can be arranged. The pretty coastal villages of Alnmouth and Craster and numerous superb beaches are only a short drive away, whilst picturesque Warkworth with its castle, charming Alnwick with its castle and award-winning gardens, and the National Trust’s Wallington Hall and Cragside are all within easy reach.
