Barrow and Stile End, Braithwaite
Start this moderate walk in the village of Braithwaite at the village shop and go left towards Newlands and Buttermere. Turn right at the sign for Braithwaite Lodge and go over the cattle grid before reaching the lodge, from here you’ll see a sign pointing to the right.
Follow the sign to the public footpath heading towards Newlands. Follow the farm track straight across the field to a gate and go through it. Turn left and follow the path to the ridge of Barrow, the ascent is gentle and the path wide and grassy.
You will reach a dip before the summit, beware of slippery rocks here. At the summit you can take in magnificent views of the north Lake District, including Derwent Water and Keswick.
Follow the path over the other side of the summit and down to join the zig-zag path at the base. This path leads to the smaller summit of Stile End. At the peak of Stile End, you’ll find views of Skiddaw, the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake, and the Coledale valley.
Follow the grassy path from the peak straight over and down to the farm gate. Go through the gate and continue into Braithwaite village.
