Carisbrooke Castle
The Isle of Wight’s Carisbrooke Castle has had many uses since its construction in the late Roman times, from being royal holiday home to a king’s prison. Nowadays, it’s an English Heritage landmark that’s packed with things to do.
After passing through the castle’s imposing stone gate, why not go for a tour of the Carisbrooke Castle Museum? On this tour, you’ll find several exhibits that showcase the landmark’s history, such as when it was a Norman castle and when it imprisoned Charles I during the Civil War.
Afterwards, make your way out to the grounds, where bowling games on the green and the castle’s resident donkeys await.
The Princess Beatrice Garden is another must-see at Carisbrooke Castle. The garden was used as a retreat for Queen Victoria’s daughter and the gorgeous plants reflect Princess Beatrice’s crest.
Once you’ve soaked up the pretty sights of the garden, be sure to test your hiking ability and try the Norman Keep and Wall Walk. This hike offers amazing views from the ancient castle keep, including panoramas of the Isle of Wight.
Complete your visit to Carisbrooke Castle with a visit to the tearoom, where you can enjoy mouthwatering sandwiches and cakes.
