Furness Abbey
Head to Furness Abbey and view for yourself the structure that appeared in Wordsworth’s Guide to the Lakes. The abbey was founded by Stephen, a 12th-century king and was one of the wealthiest monasteries in the region and the country.
Today, the abbey boasts some of the finest monastic ruins in England and it’s easy for visitors to imagine how monks lived and worshipped here between the 12th and 16th centuries before Henry VIII’s dissolution.
In the 19th century, the abbey attracted the attention of authors and artists, including Ann Radcliffe, a gothic novelist who visualised an ethereal procession of monks.
Tickets can be booked online through English Heritage, the abbey is only open on weekends.
